Abductions are numerous during the ufo convention. We enjoyed our visit but were glad to get back on Earth to continue on our Route 66 trek.
ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO – SITE OF THE 1947 SPACECRAFT CRASH. DESPITE SEVERAL WITNESSES,PHYSICAL EVIDENCE AND ALIEN BODIES, THE GOVERNMENT TO THIS DAY SAYS IT WAS A “WEATHER BALLOON.” THE UFO MUSEUM, THE GODDARD MUSEUM, AND THE ROSWELL VISITOR CENTER HOST A CONVENTION EACH YEAR WHERE LECTURES BY RESEARCHERS, SCIENTISTS. ABDUCTEES, ETC. ARE HELD CONTINUOUSLY. WE BELIEVE!
Above Alan poses with Travis Walton. In 1975 at the age of 22, he was a member of a seven-man logging crew cutting trees in the forested mountain region of Arizona. Driving home from work the crew encountered a strange glowing object. Travis, a bit of a show off, exited the vehicle and walked toward the light. He disappeared and when the incident was reported, his fellow workers were accused of murdering him. Amazingly, several days later, Travis was found wandering about the forest in a confused daze. This is the best documented account of an alien abduction and is memorialized in a subsequent movie “Fire in the Sky.” Alan bought Travis’ book and a copy of the movie. Alan chose to have his picture taken with Travis instead of Adrienne Barbeau (of The Fog and The Swamp Thing).
Barbeau, looking good for her age, was continually swamped (ha!) and signed autographs throughout the convention.
Researchers lectured throughout the 4 days together and separately. These lectures were held at the UFO Museum but more lectures were held simultaneously at the Goddard Museum.
Probably the most notable of the lecturers/researchers is Stanton Friedman. He is a nuclear physicist with degrees in physics at U of Chicago. He is the original civilian investigator of the Roswell incident. Alan bought his book.
Donald Schmitt served as director of special investigations for UFO Studies in Chicago. He has spent years interviewing witnesses and relatives of deceased witnesses to the Roswell crash. He has two best-selling books: UFO Crash at Roswell and The Truth about the UFO Crash at Roswell. He has appeared on Oprah and Larry King. We attended two of his lectures
Alan bought Tom Carey’s book. He has published 30 books on the Roswell event in 1947. We attended three of his lectures.
The Goddard Museum of History and Art was fascinating. They had a detailed exhibit on his life. He was one of American’s first rocket scientists. People laughed at him and his inventions, but he ended up with the last laugh. The art section was very impressive, see below.
The Indian Dancer mural is probably my favorite piece of art ever!
THE ALIEN PARADE
The big event of the UFO convention was the Alien Parade. It was actually pretty pathetic but people lined the parade route for hours. Below are a few of the very few entries:
About 30 miles from Roswell is the Bottomless Lakes State Park. We checked it out:
We had a great time in Roswell. The RV park was very comfortable and the Convention offered excellent speakers. We wanted to go to the crash site, but that wasn’t an option. On July 4 the city put on a premier fireworks display. In the morning on July 5 we headed back to Route 66, stopping at the gravesite of Billy the Kid and eating lunch at Santa Rosa in a famed Route 66 diner called Josephs. We headed east to Tucumcari, which is another story!
