Utah, keyed by ex-area players, states its case for No. 1

Former Damien and Citrus College star Freddie Brown runs after one of his 12 receptions for Utah in the Utes' 31-17 victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Friday.
What was that word? A Ute? What is a Ute?
- Fred Gwynne as Judge Chamberlain Haller in "My Cousin Vinny"
Alabama knows what a Ute is today, especially after the Utah Utes made their claim to be ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press football poll.
Utah's argument?
A convincing 31-17 victory over Tide in the Sugar Bowl on Friday. The victory over Alabama, which was ranked No. 1 for five consecutive weeks during the regular season, allowed the Utes, helped by former Damien High School and Citrus College star Freddie Brown and former Pasadena City standout David Reed, to become the only undefeated team in the bowl championship division, finishing 13-0.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham believes that should be enough to move his team to the top spot.
"I know where I'm voting us. I'm voting us No. 1. End of story," Whittingham said after Friday's victory in New Orleans. "I don't know why they wouldn't deserve that consideration. Somebody has to explain to me why they wouldn't. There is only one undefeated team in the United States of America right now in Division I football, and it's these guys right here."
Brown did his part by being Utah's leading receiver Friday, catching 12 passes for 125 yards. He also had a key 33-yard reception that led to an important TD drive in the third quarter. Reed had two catches for 58 yards, including a 28-yard TD reception that gave the Utes' a 28-17 lead in the second half.
Utah's roster also includes former Mt. San Antonio College players Aiona Key, Viliamu Nau and Aaron Tonga and Monrovia High's Patrick Greene.

Don't forget about Sean Smith from Blair High in Pasadena. He is the starting CB for Utah and played a really good game limiting Julio Jones and forcing a fumble on a CB blitz.
Well now, Utah thinks it should be called the Best Team in College Football for 2008. What, does Utah want the medals without being in the war? This reminds me of Russia wanting to join the war against Japan at the end of WWII.
Let's keep it simple, shall we? Utah is in a "NON BCS CONFERENCE." The operative word is "NON." The NON means that it is in a conference of schools which cannot match the money other schools place in their football programs. That's why you don't see Utah with the best recruits in the nation. They don't have the money it takes for travel, etc. Utah can't afford a decent size stadium to hold it's games in. Sorry Utah, if you're below 90,000 seats, you better look at yourself.
If you don't agree that Utah should be in a Non BCS Conference, the President of your school and Conference does. They signed the BCS agreement.
Utah doesn't play a week to week schedule of a BCS Conference school. That matters. Join the SEC and see your team fade with injured players. How many players is Utah putting in the NFL this year? Your own people don't think it's fair to start the season against Ohio State then immediately play USC.
A baseball team from Japan could beat the Dodgers, but does that mean they could survive in the NL? USC beat the Dodgers once, but they didn't immediately apply to enter the NL.
Fans of Utah should first get their team to a point that they are in a BCS Conference. This isn't the "Chronicles of Narnia" or "Peter Pan," but the title for the BEST TEAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL.
Seems like Doug's paragraph # 2 boost Utah's case for # !!
The likes of Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, LSU better hope Utah never gets the "best recruits" in the nation!
Non BCS schoopls don't deserve a shot at the title in your opinion. Well why not let them start thier own division if thats the case. BCS conferences has all those powerhouses like Mississippi State, Baylor, Iowa State, Syracuse, The Washington Schools etc who if your logic was true would all beat Utah and are more deserving at a shot at a title because they in a BCS conference. Get real Utah beat 6 Bowl teams 3 in the top 16 in the final BCS standings. What teams did Florida beat in the tough SEC east. Georgia down year,Vandy and Kentucky 6-6, Tennessee didn't make a bowl game South Carolina mediocre at best but just because they in a BCS conference we should automatically assume Utah couldnt compete against those schools. Could they beat Florida probabally not just like they didn't stand a chance against mighty Alabama but dont act like Florida had a monster scehdule in fact they even beat up on a AA team wow.
"Sorry Utah, if you're below 90,000 seats, you better look at yourself."
there are 12 cfb stadiums that meet your expectations, and they don't include Florida or Oklahoma. So I guess by your standards, there should be 12 teams who qualify to play in the NC? Brilliant!
by the way Utah had a better strength of schedule than USC or Alabama.
