How I Roll

So I admit it ain't no Harley. In truth, a Vespa looks like a Mack truck next to this thing. But at $4.40 a gallon for Dick Cheney's favorite liquid propellant, the eGo Classic electric scooter has made me the toast of the neighborhood. Plug it into any home outlet, let the pair of batteries charge up and then take off on your local errands without burning a drop of fossil fuel. Pat yourself on the back -- it's easy being green after all.

The $1549 eGo cycle will travel some twenty-five miles on a charge, and at a top speed of around 24 miles per hour -- just fast enough to cruise the side streets comfortably, a little too pokey to feel invulnerable on Ventura Blvd. Oh yes, the local constabulary nicked me for being helmetless my first week on the road, so add another $45 for DOT-approved head-gear.

The big brains at eGo are working through the wee hours to come up with a lithium battery solution to increase the range of the bad-boy, but I've done the math and figure I'm saving a dollar or two every time I leave the Lexus in the driveway. It is, admittedly, not the smoothest ride in sports, and I may look just a little bit un-Sonny Barger on the piglet, but, hey, women are looking twice and it sure ain't my good looks!

$1,549 -- not bad. And a lot less noisy and smoky than the combustion-driven equivalent.

Besides the lithium battery, the best thing would be to have a couple of easily switchable battery packs so you could either double the range or at least keep one charging while the other is in use.

But can you do a wheelie?
