It was only a matter of time before some web-genius decided to create a social-networking site for we of the heather and gorse. Voila! LetsPlay36.net is a chance for the solitary golfer to find a game with sociable strangers whether home or away. Respected golf writer Mike Purkey took his own estimable politesse and grace on the golf course and multiplied it by his imagination to come up with this indispensable tool. It is certain to be a grand success.

Registration and everything else on the site is free, and your info won't be peddled to Ed McMahon or anyone else. The site is friendly to beginners and veterans alike -- offering essays on travel destinations, insider PGA tour reportage and the latest equipment. Even more importantly, there are forums on golf etiquette and rules that all of us would do well to occasionally reference.

Is romance, even love, on the menu as well? We will leave that to Cupid, the only golf god with just one arrow in his quiver, but the possibilities are indeed limitless. Make friends, swap access to private clubs, meet at a muni -- all is within the rules at LetsPlay36.net. I can't tell you how many times I've awakened to blue skies, heard the siren call of fairways and greens, then stayed in bed watching the tube -- all because I couldn't find a pal sufficiently underemployed to join forces with! Hackers unite! See you on the first tee...

About this blog

A Detroit native, David Weiss fled Motown for Los Angeles in 1978 and began to write for Daily Variety and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, primarily as a music critic with a focus on jazz. His own music career started soon thereafter, with the surrealistic funk band Was (Not Was), then various gigs as a composer and producer, working with Bob Dylan and Rickie Lee Jones among others. In a parallel universe, Weiss has been filing golf and travel stories for T&L Golf, Golfweek and The New York Times and is a regular contributor to NPR's "Day to Day" program, doing stories on music and all things cultural.
