Angels pitcher Sean Burnett had surgery to remove bone spurs in his left elbow last October and is still dealing with the aftereffects.
An examination Tuesday revealed inflammation in the back of the elbow, and the Angels placed Burnett on the disabled list for the second time this season. Even though the source of pain has been different, both of Burnett’s DL stints have been related to the surgically repaired elbow, which has cost him 22 games already.
“It just all relates to that surgery I had,” he said. “My elbow’s got more movement to do. It’s inflaming itself, just reacting to that space. It’s used to those bone spurs being there.”
Burnett said he received an injection intended to lubricate the elbow joint. The inflammation is localized to a different area than the forearm stiffness that sidelined Burnett from April 27 through May 21. That pain has subsided but the elbow pain has returned — later than expected, Burnett said.
“It’s so angry right now, it’s better to let it settle down,” he said.
Burnett and Angels manager Mike Scioscia both believe it’s realistic for the pitcher to miss the minimum 15 days. In his first season with the Angels Burnett has a 0.93 earned-run average in 13 appearances.
Right-hander Tommy Hanson will take Burnett’s spot on the active roster. He was activated from the restricted list Tuesday.
