Josh Hamilton files for divorce, wife says she is “blindsided”

Josh Hamilton is in the process of getting divorced from his wife, according to court documents filed in Tarrant County, Texas.

The Angels slugger filed for divorce in February, according to the Dallas Morning News, around the time news of his self-reported relapse with alcohol and drugs earlier this year began to surface.

Katie Hamilton, who has been married to her husband since 2004 despite his continued struggles with addiction, told TMZ Sports she was “blindsided” by his decision to file for divorce.

“It came out of nowhere,” Katie Hamilton told TMZ Sports. ”There was no big fight or blow up. Nothing sparked it.”

Josh Hamilton isn’t allowed to see any of his four children, ages 3 to 14, without supervision, according to court documents, and is prohibited from visiting the family’s properties in Westlake, Texas; Newport Coast, California; and Valley Mills, Texas. Hamilton’s $16.5 million home in Newport was put up for sale on Friday.

Since his relapse, the Angels are showing little public support for Hamilton, who is owed $83 million over the remaining three years of his five-year, $125 million contract. Owner Arte Moreno said before the team’s home opener April 10 that Hamilton may not play for the Angels again. Major League Baseball elected not to punish the slugger for his relapse, an April 3 ruling that prompted public expression of disappointment from multiple people within the Angels organization.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia met with Hamilton Wednesday in Houston, where he has been since before spring training to rehabilitate the shoulder on which he had surgery in February. Regardless of the many variables surrounding Hamilton’s status with the Angels, Scioscia said Monday he isn’t sure when Hamilton will be healthy enough to return.

“His physical rehab is going very, very well,” Scioscia said. “And we’ll just continue to take it one step at a time.”
