Not even his manager is counting on Weaver’s velocity to return

Even Mike Scioscia’s optimistic approach to Jered Weaver doesn’t include expectations for the Angels’ Opening Day starter to regain velocity.

Weaver’s fastball averages somewhere between 83 and 84 mph, something the Angels manager said isn’t tied to the 32-year-old’s issues with his release point. The end result is an 0-4 record and a 6.29 ERA.

“I don’t think the release point issue is going to add velocity, but I think it’s going to give him the command,” Scioscia said. “Whether the velocity comes or it doesn’t come, he’s not that far from last year when he won 18 games.”

Weaver went 18-9 with a 3.59 ERA last season but his average 2014 fastball was about 3 mph faster than the 2015 version. Weaver admitted to having no answers after two of his first four pitches went for home runs in Sunday’s 5-0 loss to the Giants, but several in the Angels’ clubhouse believe it’s simply a funk that will pass.

“I don’t care if you’re a veteran or a rookie, if you’re struggling to find some things, your confidence takes a hit,” Scioscia said. “If he doesn’t pick up any more velocity, but he matches it with command, he’s going to be fine. Right now he’s having trouble finding that balance.”
