A source Tuesday night told this newspaper that the drama between manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Jerry Dipoto would result in them being called on the carpet Wednesday and that one – probably Dipoto – could lose his job.

And now a senior baseball writer at ESPN.com is reporting that Dipoto is likely out of a job, citing a Major League Baseball source, after resigning his post.

The Angels have not confirmed that Dipoto is gone.

News of possible friction between Dipoto and manager Mike Scioscia broke Monday night, a day after Scioscia missed his normal pre-game meeting with reporters because of a lengthy meeting he was in with Dipoto and the Angels players on Sunday.

According to veteran baseball writer Ken Rosenthal, the crux of the meeting was Dipoto not being happy with the way Scioscia and his coaching staff conveyed scouting information to the players.

Scioscia addressed the situation before Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees, even going so far as to say that whatever turmoil existed between him and Dipoto in the past was just that – in that past.

Albert Pujols allegedly stepped up in defense of Scioscia in the Sunday meeting and said that the coaching staff is doing its best, but that the roster is not as strong as it was a year ago, when it won a MLB-high 98 games.

Pujols vehemently denied he said that prior to Tuesday’s game. He was also upset that information in the meeting somehow leaked out.

“I can’t control that,” he said. “You’ve got 25 grown men in here, you got a front office, you got coaches, so whoever got that leak, that’s really embarrassing, you know, because we’re supposed to be family here.”

The Angels had recently extended Dipoto’s contract through 2016.

Angels owner Arte Moreno spoke to the team after Tuesday’s game, and Scioscia took a long while to get to his post-game news conference.
