David Freese, on DL with fractured finger, making progress

Third baseman David Freese, who has been on the disabled list since sustaining a fractured right index finger when he got hit with a pitch on July 22, is making progress.

Freese, 32, on Wednesday threw for the first time while putting pressure on the finger and manager Mike Scioscia was encouraged.

“David threw today and we hope he broke through a plateau because he felt really good about where he was today, not at a level where he needs to be to go out there and play, or get excited about him where he can go and play defense and get close,” Scioscia said before Wednesday’s game against the White Sox. “But this is the best he’s thrown since the injury and it’s encouraging.”

Lefty C.J. Wilson to have surgery Thursday on left elbow

Southpaw C.J. Wilson said he wanted to get more opinions on whether he needed surgery to clean out his left elbow. After spending six to seven hours this past Tuesday at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles – with as many as five doctors chiming in – Wilson has opted for the surgery and it will be performed Thursday there.

Wilson told reporters the doctors were surprised he had been able to pitch as long as he did in his condition; the discomfort began in April.

Wilson, who last pitched July 28 at Houston, said he expects to be ready for spring training. He has had somewhat similar surgeries in 2008 and 2012.

“Each one has been different,” Wilson said. “The first one I had a bunch of bone chips, second one was just bone spurs and this one was some of each.”

Wilson, 34, went 8-8 with an ERA of 3.89. He is making $18 million this season and will make $20 million in 2016, the final year of his contract.

Huston Street welcomed newest son into the world, then warmed up in the bullpen at Angel Stadium

Manager Mike Scioscia was impressed. Closer Huston Street had just become a father for the third time when his third son, Rafe William Street, was born at 11 a.m. Wednesday. So what does Street do? He shows up to Angel Stadium for the Angels’ day game, ready to pitch.

According to Scioscia, Street showed up in either the fourth of fifth inning of the Angels’ dramatic 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians, a game in which Street was warming up in the bullpen at the time it ended when the Angels scored three runs in the ninth inning to win.

Had it gone into extra innings, Street would have been on the hill in the 10th.

“He was up for the lion’s share of the night, welcomed his son into the world late morning, came and took a shower and said, ‘I’m ready to go,’ ” Scioscia said. “He was ready to pitch that 10th inning if we needed him.”

Scioscia applauded Street for his professionalism.

Mike Trout, Andrew Heaney earn AL monthly awards for July

Centerfielder Mike Trout has been named American League Player of the Month for July and southpaw Andrew Heaney has been named Rookie of the Month.

Trout batted .367 (29-for-79) with 12 home runs, 24 RBIs and 20 runs scored to win the third such award of his career. Most recently, he won it in June 2014.

Trout slugged .861 in July, had an on-base percentage of .462 and an OPS of 1.323.

Heaney went 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA in four starts. He struck out 19 in 27 1/3 innings.
