Matt Shoemaker has right forearm strain, will be pushed back

It’s been an interesting season for right-hander Matt Shoemaker. In 2014 he went 16-4 with an ERA of 3.04 and finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting. After struggling most of this season,  Shoemaker was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake City on Aug. 16 with a record of 5-9 and an ERA of 4.76. He was recalled and made two fine starts that brought his record to 7-9 and lowered his ERA to 4.31.

Shoemaker allowed just one hit and no runs in  7 1/3 innings on Aug. 27 at Detroit and just one run on five hits in seven innings Tuesday at Oakland.

Now, he’s suddenly suffering from a right forearm strain. Shoemaker was slated to start Monday against the Dodgers in Game 1 of the Freeway Series, but manager Mike Scioscia told reporters before Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers that Nick Tropeano would take that start and Shoemaker could be pushed back as many as five days.

“He really pitched well in Detroit,” Scioscia said of Shoemaker. “Pitched really well, obviously, in Oakland. And (he) just felt it a little bit later that night and the next day.”

Scioscia said Shoemaker has not had this issue in the past.

Five things to take from Angels’ 7-0 victory over Minnesota

– Big outing for Matt Shoemaker in this one. Shoemaker, who has struggled this season to find the rhythm that helped him go 16-4 in 2014, pitched six innings of two-hit ball. He struck out 10 and walked three on 88 pitches to move to 5-7 on the season. Even so, his ERA dropped only to 4.55. It was 3.04 a season ago.

Chris Iannetta continued his recent surge at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and four RBIs. He is 9-for-32 over his past 10 games, which equates to a .281 average. That’s not spectacular, but it did raise his average from .181 to .199.

C.J. Cron went 4-for-4 to raise his average to .278. That is quite impressive since it was just .204 upon being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City in late June. Cron is hitting .488 (21-for-43) this month.

Daniel Robertson has continued to make the most of his opportunity. Typically, he’s been platooning with Matt Joyce in left field. But with Mike Trout taking the day off with a sore left heel, Robertson was in center for this one. He had two more hits and raised his average to .271.

– Speaking of Trout, he told reporters that he woke up Tuesday morning and his heel was sore. He said he didn’t remember doing anything specific to cause it. He is day-to-day.

Five things to take from Angels’ 8-2 victory over Tampa Bay Rays

Albert Pujols hits his 536th career home run Tuesday night, tying him with Mickey Mantle for 16th-place all-time/Photo by Chris O’Meara, Associated Press

– First and foremost, Albert Pujols hit the 536th home run of his career to tie Mickey Mantle for 16th-place all-time. It was Pujols’ 16th of the season, tying him for the team lead with Mike Trout.

– Angels fans have to hope that Kole Calhoun’s second three-hit game in the past four games means he’s finally starting to shake himself out of a rather lengthy slump. He was hitting .314 on May 13 and had dipped to .266 on June 2. He stayed there for one more game, moved to .276 after going 3-for-4 on June 5 but then dropped back down to .266 by going 0-for-7 the next two games. Not only did Calhoun go 3-for-5 in this one, he drove in four runs. He had one RBI in six games this month ahead of this performance. Calhoun now sits with 29 RBIs.

– Also nice to see was the job by starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker, who seems to be having a sophomore jinx of sorts. He has been better of late, but even by giving up just two runs in 6 1/3 innings in this one, his ERA on the season is 4.86. Shoemaker (4-4) struck out six and walked just one while throwing 84 pitches.

–  This victory stopped a five-game losing streak and pulled the Angels within four games of the Astros (34-26) in the AL West. Unfortunately for the Angels (29-29), they have been caught and passed by the Texas Rangers (31-27), who are in second just two games back of the Astros.

– Former Asuza Pacific University star Kirk Nieuwenhuis is getting a decent look here by the Angels after being acquired from the New York Mets. But after starting 2-for-6, he has gone in the tank. Nieuwenhuis went 0-for-5 in this one and is 1-for-his-last-16 and has seen his average drop to .136 with the Angels. Nieuwenhuis hit just .079 in 38 at-bats with New York before coming to the Angels.

RHP Matt Shoemaker to pitch out of bullpen for next week

Angels manager Mike Scioscia on Wednesday said right-hander Matt Shoemaker will pitch out of the bullpen for the next week, the biggest reason being that the Angels have off days Thursday and Monday and they won’t need all five starters.

“He can help us in the pen, he has at times before,” Scioscia said, alluding to 2014. “Wouldn’t be a bad thing for him because he could help us in the pen, also get a couple of bullpens in to keep refining his release point, get his pitches down in the zone more. I think for the whole rotation, this is the best way to go about it without disrupting five guys.”

Shoemaker is 3-4 with an ERA of 5.08 in 10 starts, but he has been much better of late, having lowered his ERA from 6.61 on May 9. He was 16-4 with an ERA of 3.04 in ’14.
