According to VIZ Media, Syfy will start airing episodes of the anime show "Monster" on Oct. 12.

It will be part of the network's Ani-Monday programming block. New episodes will air each Monday night on the Syfy channel and will be re-broadcast on SyFy's sister channel, Chiller, the week after. It is rated TV-MA.

"Monster" is based on the manga by Naoki Urasawa that is published in North America by VIZ Media.

I consider "Monster" one of the best anime shows created because of the characters and the plot. It is a psychological thriller centered around a Japanese surgeon who works in Europe.

Dr. Kenzo Tenma saves a young gunshot victim rushed into his hospital. Little did he know that act would propel him into a nightmarish odyssey where he would become the hunted.

Because Johan, the boy he saved, is not like any child. He is a cold-blooded killer. Several of Tenma's colleagues are murdered and police's suspicion fall on the brilliant surgeon years later.

The doctor goes on the run intent on stopping the young man he saved as a child. As he tries to follow the trail of his former patient, Tenma runs into former Communist bloc men involved in secret government experiments, remorseful crooks and those who barely survived Johan.

VIZ Media announced that original uncut versions of "Naruto", "Bleach" and "Death Note" will be available on Hulu.com. For free.

The episodes carry English subtitles. Hulu is an online video service.

"Naruto" and "Death Note" launched in the United States on Hulu this week. "Bleach" and new episodes of each title will be added regularly on Hulu. (I'm assuming "Bleach" episodes aren't on there yet.)

"Death Note" (http://www.hulu.com/death-note) is based on the manga series of the same name. Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects but is bored out of his mind. All of that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals mysteriously begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to investigate, and he is soon hot on the trail of Light, who must now reevaluate his one noble goal. "Bleach" is the story of 15-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki who was born with the ability to see ghosts. When his family is attacked by a Hollow - a malevolent lost soul - Ichigo encounters a Soul Reaper and absorbs her powers. Now he has dedicated his life to protecting the innocent and helping the tortured souls find peace. Dedicated website at www.bleach.viz.com.

I still consider "Shell" by BANA one of the better anime songs I've heard. The song was used in the series, "Witch Hunter Robin", which is readily available here on DVD. The soundtrack should be easy to get too.

It's the guitar part that I like so much about the song. That and the fact the singer doesn't sound like a squeaky gerbil. Here's the opening animation to the show courtesy of some fan who put it up on YouTube.

Robin does some weird thing to the TV screen. I suppose she's getting all swoony over Amon who broods, shoots and generally looks cool during the entire show. But who wouldn't swoon over such a bishounen (beautiful boy) , neh? And like any brooding anime hero, Amon wears all black plus a trenchcoat. I'm getting the vapors now. Just kidding.

I love the artwork in "Death Note" the manga which was faithfully rendered in the anime. Some anime blogger said it was very clear what show sucked up most of the budget for last season's crop of anime. Well it shows.

"Death Note" has a new opening and ending song beginning with episode 20. I loathe them. Here's the first intro song which fits the protagonist's motives to a T. Just remember that Light Yagami is a sociopath who believes that the ends justify the means.

I summarized the show in two previous entries so I won't repeat myself.

Satoshi Kon makes films which happen to be animated. He stands out from the rest of the pack with his choice of subject matter, the depth of his films and his ability to tell a story in a very interesting way. He also uses films to make social commentary.

I may not like all of his work but I appreciate the man's talent.

This native of Hokkaido, Japan is the director of "Perfect Blue", "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Millennium Actress." He also directed "Paranoia Agent", a television series that aired on Cartoon Network. I wasn't too wowed with the ending and the explanation offered in "Paranoia Agent" plus I guessed who the killer was midway through "Perfect Blue." But "Millennium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers" are among my personal favorites.

"Perfect Blue" is about Mima Kirigoe who decides to leave her J-pop idol image behind and become a serious actress. Along the way, she becomes the target of someone who does not approve of her new image. People around her start getting killed, a man stalks her and someone posing as "Mima" writes an online diary.

I thought this film was more or less a murder mystery set in the world of Japanese entertainment. I didn't think it was that exceptional but I liked the way the characters actually look like real people and was intrigued with the whole idol-making process. I gave the mystery plot a B.

In "Tokyo Godfathers", Kon tells the tale of three homeless people - Gin the drunk, Hana the former drag queen and Miyuki the teenage runaway - who find a baby in the trash during Christmas Eve. The film details their search to find the child's parents and reveals the reasons why these unlikely godfathers became denizens of the streets. I think this is Kon's most accessible work. The main characters are good, decent people despite their flaws and they really care for each other. The humor can be broad in some scenes. But the film also takes a jab at the way Japanese society views and treats the homeless.

But it is "Millennium Actress" that touched me the most. To me, it's about the search for a long lost love and also a loving tribute to Japanese films. Other folks might see it differently.

In "Millennium Actress", director Tachibana manages to land an interview with Chiyoko Fujiwara, a famous actress long retired from the business. He wants to do a documentary on her. She tells him her story and literally takes him along on her memories. I'm not kidding. We see Chiyoko in various stages of her career and Tachibana invariably pops up dressed appropriately for the period. We later find out why he is such an admirer of Chiyoko.

I enjoyed this film because I can relate to Chiyoko's search for someone she loved and lost. Sometimes, the search takes on more importance than the object of one's affections who becomes an idealized image. Such a trek can end in heartbreak. I know so.

Kon's next film is called, "Paprika" which is based on a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui. I haven't read the book and have only seen stills of the movie which is supposed to be more surreal than Kon's previous works. Anime News Network reported that "Paprika" will be shown in certain U.S. cities and will be released on DVD too. I can't wait.

I consider Satoshi Kon an artist who uses animation as the medium to express his creativity.

I saw the first three episodes of "Death Note" and "D. Gray-man" last night. Hmm. "Death Note" is certainly very faithful to the manga.

Like I said before in an earlier review of the manga, "Death Note" has an interesting storyline and great art. The show also looks great. I like that the show uses a chorus as background music whenever the protoganist, Light Yagami, dispatches another criminal using a special notebook called the Death Note. It fits his God complex.

This straight-A student found the notebook lying on school grounds which actually belongs to a death god or Shinigami. Writing the name of a person in the Death Note while keeping their image in your mind causes that person to die. If you don't specify the cause of death, the person will die from a heart attack. There are other rules.

The original owner of the notebook is Ryuk, a Shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world because he was bored. Light is the only one who sees or hears Ryuk unless of course another human touches the Death Note.

Light thinks the world is rotten and starts killing off criminals. His plan is to create a utopia where he will rule as God. People call this killer of criminals, Kira. But the police and L, a secretive man who cracks unsolved cases, vow to capture Kira/Light. L narrows the search down to the Kanto region of Japan and convinces the international law enforcement community to make Japan the HQ of the task force.

But Light has an ace up his sleeve. The man leading the Japanese detectives is his father. The battle between L and Kira/Light commences.

I'm not so sure about "D. Gray-man" though and am wondering if I should continue watching. The show, which is based on a manga, tells the story of the exorcist Allen Walker whose deformed hand turns into a weapon that destroys Akuma. An Akuma is a weapon created by Walker's nemesis, the Millenium Earl from someone's soul and despair.

The Earl seeks to destroy mankind and also the substance known as Innocence which Walker and the other exorcists wield in their fight against him and his minions. Walker belongs to the Dark Religious Organization that was created to stop the Earl.

Somehow the show didn't wow me and I even found the funny moments strangely jarring. Maybe it will grow on me later on.

You are a brilliant surgeon in a big German hospital with a great career ahead of you. Your fiancee is the hospital director's daughter. There's talk of you becoming the department head. Your patients love you and most of your colleagues envy you. But fate has something terrible in store for you.

In "Monster", Dr. Kenzo Tenma's decision to operate on a wounded boy rather than the mayor has consequences he never imagined. He loses his job, his fiancee and gets accused of murder.


SPOILER ALERT. The boy, Johan, is actually a serial killer. He survives the operation and continues killing. His victims include the hospital director and the new department head. Years later, Dr. Tenma gets blamed for their deaths along with several others. He goes on the run. Tenma searches for Johan to kill him while trying to elude authorities especially one persistent detective. Along the way, he meets the young man's twin sister who has lost her memory and the people who "helped" in Johan's upbringing. I won't reveal anything more but let's just say the Cold War created twisted men with twisted ideas.

Hands down, "Monster" is the best anime I've seen recently. The writing is wonderful, the characters are complex and the animation fits the tone and mood of the show. It is a psychological thriller and the mystery of Johan's origin slowly unravels throughout the 74-episode series. Tenma the fugitive encounters decent folks, crooks with some good in them still and the truly depraved. The world in "Monster" isn't black and white but shades of gray.

The only complaint I have is that the show keeps Tenma heroic and pure despite of what he goes through. One can almost predict his actions.

Some folks might think the show slow, boring and will say that it's just mostly people talking. To each his own I say.

The manga is available now in the U.S but I don't think the anime has been licensed yet.
