Virgin America and Delta named best U.S. airlines in reputable survey

Virgin America is the top U.S. airline and Delta Air Lines is second in the annual SkyTraxx survey, perhaps the most reputable of the many rankings of the world’s carriers.

According to the group, more than 18 million travelers from 160 different countries help choose the list, which SkyTraxx calls “global benchmark of airline excellence.”

It’s good news for Virgin, the quirky hip airline that generally tries to market itself as a premium carrier and also helpful for Delta, usually considered the best of the four remaining U.S. network airlines. But it’s also worth nothing that no U.S airline made the Skytraxx list of the top 20 carriers in the world. As we reported yesterday, Emirates, Qatar and Singapore lead the global list.

Skytraxx actually ranks the top 10 airlines in North America, rather than just the United States. And on that full list, Air Canada is tops. Here are the complete rankings:

  1. Air Canada
  2. Virgin America
  3. Delta Air Lines
  4. JetBlue Airways
  5. United Airlines
  6. Alaska Airlines
  7. WestJet
  8. Southwest Airlines
  9. Hawaiian Airlines
  10. Air Transat
