Want to ship your car by air from Los Angeles International Airport?

Delta Air Lines is now happy to take care of that for you. Last week, Delta Cargo announced it will accept cars for shipment from LAX through its service called Variation Wheels. The airline take cars, motorcycles and light trucks, which fly in the cargo hold of widebody passenger jets.

Los Angeles is the sixth U.S. station handing cars for Delta, according to airline officials. The others are Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York-JFK and Salt Lake City.

Delta also transports cars abroad. The service is available to Bangkok, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Frankfurt, Lima, London-Heathrow, Milan, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Stuttgart and Tokyo-Narita.

Delta spokesman Russell Cason declined to say how much the service costs, but he noted that prices fluctuate based on factors such as flight length, the weight of the car, and whether the shipper has a corporate contract with Delta. An individual might pay more than a company with a long-term contract, he said.

This is a common revenue generator for many large international airlines, including Lufthansa, which regularly transports cars between Europe and Los Angeles. Delta officials say they launched Variation Wheels in 2011 and that revenue has grown 300 percent year over year since.
