Passengers at Burbank Bob Hope Airport and Long Beach Airport soon will be able to speed through security as part of an expansion of a popular program.
The program, called TSA Precheck, allows passengers who are pre-approved by the agency to keep on their shoes, belt and light outerwear during the security process. They may also keep laptop computers and small containers of liquids and gels inside their luggage.
“Think of security before 9/11,” said Andrew Fielding, a long-time Precheck user who helps travelers redeem frequent flier miles for maximum benefit. “That’s how I describe it.”
The program, which began in October 2011, is already available at 40 airports, including Los Angeles International Airport. Bob Hope and Long Beach are two of 60 facilities nationwide in this second phase, though TSA officials have not said exactly when the program will start at those two airports.
Thus far, TSA Precheck has only been available to elite frequent fliers traveling on Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Virgin America, as well as passengers enrolled in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program called Global Entry. But TSA officials recently announced all travelers soon will be permitted to join for an $85 fee, and the agency’s director said he hopes to have half of all passengers enrolled by the end of 2014.
Passengers who want expedited screening must fill out on online application and provide fingerprints. Officials say the vetting process will take about two to three weeks. Membership is valid for five years.
Here are the California airports that have, or will have, PreCheck. Airports that already have the program have an asterisk.
