SECOND UPDATE: A police source told me this was a two-liter plastic bottle that exploded inside a restroom stall in a Terminal 4 bathroom accessible only to airport employees.
UPDATE: As of around 8:30 p.m. the terminal was reopened and flights resumed. An airport police spokeswoman said the explosion occurred in a restroom not accessible by passengers.
A bottle containing dry ice exploded Sunday night at Terminal 2 at Los Angeles International Airport, police said.
The incident happened at about 6:30 p.m near Gate 27, said Sgt. Karla Ortiz of the Los Angeles World Airports police. As of 7:56, no flights were leaving from Terminal 2, she said, while the Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad was inspecting the terminal.
“I don’t know if this is something that was done accidentally or on purpose,” Ortiz said. “I don’t have all the details of why someone would carry dry ice in a bottle.”
Ortiz called it a “small type of explosion.”
