A Los Angeles-based American Airlines Boeing 777 captain died in a small plane crash Tuesday near Santa Maria, airline officials said Friday.
“American Airlines is saddened to learn of the death of Capt. Dave Casey, who had been a pilot with American for 34 years,” the airline said in an emailed statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Capt. Casey’s family and the others affected by this tragedy.”
According to the Santa Maria Times, the plane was a Morrisey 2150 and went down near Oceano in San Luis Obispo County, Calif. “Casey, 63, departed from Santa Maria at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 14, according to the FAA, and a 911 caller in San Luis Obispo County reported hearing an aircraft engine sputtering over the ocean near Pier Avenue in Oceano about 2 p.m.,” the newspaper reported.
