What would you pay to ensure you won’t have to wait for your checked luggage?
US Airways is the latest carrier to announce plans to deliver your checked baggage. As long as your final destination is within 100 miles of the airport, the carrier – or more accurately its representative – will ensure your bags arrive between four and six hours of your flight.
The cost isn’t cheap, but I suppose the worthiness of this depends on how much you value your time.
- $29.95 for 1 bag
- $39.95 for 2 bags
- $49.95 for 3 – 10 bags
“I would say the baggage delivery system is one that we are still working on driving adoption toward,” a Maria Walter, a United managing director, told me in an interview. “Everyone has this idea that is sounds so easy to have your bags delivered, and it’s great. But there’s still something about the willingness to part with your bag.”
Walter said travelers may just need some time to get accustomed to how bag delivery works. The good news, she said, is that United sees good repeat business among customers who have used the program at least once.
“There’s been this inherent distrust of, ‘My bag gets lost if I’m not managing it myself, this whole time,'” Walter said. “So getting people used to the idea of, ‘we’ll get it from baggage claim and get it to your hotel’ is something that is going to be a bit of a paradigm shift for people to get used to.”
Have you ever used a baggage service? Is it worth the cost?
