Good news, Kanye fans.
City News Service in Los Angeles is reporting that the L.A. District Attorney’s office will not charge Kanye West in connection with a skirmish the rapper had last month with a member of the paparazzi at LAX. It made national news, but another photographer told me that no one was hurt in the incident.
According to the City News Service, the district attorney’s office is referring the matter to the city attorney’s office, which could decide to file misdemeanor charges against West. That does not seem likely, however.
I have just heard from Sgt. Belinda Nettles of Los Angeles World Airports police.
She could not confirm that Kanye West is the celebrity in question, as was reported by TMZ and confirmed to me by a member of the LAX paparazzi. But she did say an incident was reported to police by a photographer.
Here is the statement:
“Today at approximately 2:00 p.m., at the Tom Bradley International Terminal (on the arrival level curbside), Los Angeles Airport Police officers were flagged down by a citizen (photographer) who alleged that he was taking pictures of an individual when he was battered by the subject. The alleged subject was not at the location nor was he observed by officers at the scene. LAFD was notified, responded to the location and transported the victim to a local hospital for medical attention. A police report was taken by the Los Angeles Police Department and the investigation is ongoing.”
Rapper Kanye West punched a member of the LAX-based paparazzi today at the airport, TMZ has reported. In a text message, one of the photographers who regularly works at the airport said he was aware of the incident.
“Kanye West attacked paparazzi at LAX,” that photographer wrote to me in a text message.
TMZ has pictures of paramedics treating the photographer and loading him into a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance.
According to TMZ, Kanye went after a particularly aggressive photographer. The paparazzi was not affiliated with TMZ.
I recently spent a couple of days with LAX-based paparazzi, and what struck me is how friendly their relations are with many of the celebrities. Most stars expected to be photographed and happily accommodate the photographers. But every now and then, there is some violence, as it happened today.
I’m working on trying to figure out what happened.
