Valerie Kuklenski: What's that smell?
The Associated Press reports today out of Tokyo that, when "The New World" opens there next month, some moviegoers will get the long-anticipated smellavision treatment. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Untanned hides, rotting meat, forest floor and sweat? Fortunately, we're wrong.
A computer system will prompt machines dispensing oil-based fragrances for different scenes: floral for a love scene, peppermint and rosemary for a tearjerker moment, citrus for happy scenes and a mixture of herbs with eucalyptus and tea tree for anger. Whenever the technology arrives in the U.S., I'm betting it still will be overwhelmed by popcorn with extra butter and the too-heavy application of Jennifer Lopez's cologne on that teenager two rows down.
