Chocolate advice

BoxofChocolates.jpgTalked to local chocolate expert January Jones just in time for V-day and she reassured me that "dark chocolate is tremendously healthy." I really want to believe her, but seriously folks.

Dark chocolate - not the milky version, which is loaded with sugar and butter - can increase energy levels, reduce high cholesterol and increase blood flow, she said. You can nibble a little everyday if you limit yourself to one ounce, about 2 to 3 Hershey kisses.

Tips for buying "healthy" chocolate: products with a high percentage of cocoa bean are a good option. Look for at least 60% cocoa bean on the package, but remember...

...the more cocoa the bitterer it will taste. Buy chocolate that comes in small portions so that the recipient won't be tempted to gobble it down at once.

Jones recommended major brands like Hersey or Mars, plus Costco's sugar free, low calorie Amber Lyn dark (great for diabetics or those on the Atkins diet). Scharffen Berger is also one of her favorites. I like the chocolate Dove makes but the super dark stuff is too bitter for me.

Jones' sage advice is "stop whining, start smiling and if that doesn't work start eating chocolate." She lives in Westlake Village and has an Internet radio show.

Is January Jones the actress on " Mad Men" AMC Television?
