Surprisingly, quite a few number of banks came back in my sort list that had free of a monthly fee checking account.
WaMu, which I think has conditioned everybody that they have free checking, but Wachovia (who acquired World Savings), Bank of the West, Downey Savings and U.S. Bank were also in the list for a free of monthly fee checking account.
As the site says, always review the specific banks terms and conditions and review the schedule of fees so that you are aware of what it can cost you if something to trigger a fee occurs on your account.
What was really neat is that of the above institutions I listed, none of them required a direct deposit or minimum balance to waive the monthly fee.
Bank of America has a "free" account including free bill pay, but it can only be opened on-line and not at a branch. Basically, all BofA is doing is waiving the direct deposit and minimum balance requirement if you open on-line.
Did anybody notice from their own results that no credit unions appeared on the list? Either this site does not include them, or none have signed-up?
