The 'Sex' gravy train

sex-and-the-city-the-movie.jpgIt would be hard not to blog about something that has been cluttering my brain this week - the "Sex in the City" movie! Roll your eyes now if you don't love every minute of the Carrie-Charlotte-Samantha-Miranda foursome in action. They are fabulous!

And now, a smattering of ideas about the foursome's clothes. About.com has a great low-down on "Sex" fashions, from trends the show has popularized (Stilettos, great coats, the bob) to favorite brands (Manolo Blahnik, Dolce & Gabbana, Chloe, Prada, Roberto Cavalli). The site also has four tips to look as amazing as the foursome.

+ Mix high and low. "What this means is simply learning to mix flea market finds with designer or wear high-end fashions in unexpected ways," the site says.

+It's all in the shoes. "Toss the Birkenstocks and opt for sky-high mules, sandals and pumps (the more expensive, the better). Comfort is not the key here: long legs are the point. If you have the legs for it, go bare-legged. Otherwise, try super-sheer pantyhose. And of course, a perfect pedicure is required."

+Dress on trend or slightly ahead. "Can't bear to part with your hippie chic duds? Well, the "Sex and the City" gals wouldn't be caught dead in something so blatantly last year. Subscribe to every fashion magazine and read the Fashion website religiously."

+Be prepared to drop a bundle. "Price out a typical designer outfit and it can easily run in the thousands. That's probably why the producers made Carrie's apartment such a dump (all that rent money being blown on $500-a-pop Manolos)."

Hmm, not so sure about that last one. There are ways of getting a designer look without paying for the labels. Dress like Charlotte with these tips from the Budget Fashionista. I'm not sure how much Charlotte's actual outfit costs, but the BF puts it together for $203.

Fashionable flowers litter the film, apparently, and you can get the look too. "To wear it, pin or clip pretty silk or jeweled flowers to you jacket, dress, handbag, or hair, and let it be the focus -- meaning pare back on other accents or just go ahead and leave the rest of 'em at home. A note: while Carrie can pull off the most outrageous of floral pieces we suggest that, in real life, the flower you choose to don should not exceed the size of your head," the BF writes.

Look for a lot of "get the look for less" type ideas online and in magazines after the movie comes out. I'll try to find the best of them!
