Easy to make fruit treats
Got a flyer in the mail that I could almost eat! It was full of bouquets of fruit on sticks, which may be a little hard to image if not for the picture at left. Edible Arrangements, the company that makes these tasty centerpieces, will be happy to sell you one for $59 to $200, but I bet making your own would not be difficult.
Choose an arrangement on their Web site to re-create. The one I have my eye on requires strawberries, slices of pineapple, grapes, apples dipped in chocolate. Skewer the fruit and stick them into a head of iceberg lettuce, which you can cut to fit the bottom of the vase or basket you are using.
If you want it to look fancy cover the iceberg head with tissue paper (before sticking the fruit in) and let the ends hang over the edge. Use different length skewers to create layers, with most of the fruit poking out to the side and a few on top.
Wow, this sounds really cool. I may try it at our next BBQ instead of making brownies. For more detailed directions click here.
If you order through EA my flyer says you can get $3 off when you mention the ad and code CCSM4000, which should be good until August 31, 2008. Happy eating!

The idea of the fruit bouquet is great! I would suggest dipping the fruit in either a solution of water with Vitamin C to prevent the fruit from darkening. Crystaline Vitamin C powder used to be available from TJ's.
A dilute solution of lemon (or lime) juice would probably work as well.
I think you could cut the fruit, put it in a bowl with the acidic water to chill (and keep the fruit firm) and then put the pieces on the skewers....then assemble the decoration at the last minute.
Good Luck. I worked at an Edible Arrangement store, and believe me...they are NOT that easy! Plus they are time-consuming. We had so many customers running to us at the last minute for a replacement design b/c their was a disaster. We even hav some photos of total messes! Soooo, if you think you can ..go for it! I bet you will wish you had just forked over the money and bought one from the folks who have the tools this time, the expertise, and a production line of people who are paid good wages. I guarantee that by the time you buy the fruit and spend 4 hours washing, cutting, peeling and trying to arrange it, you will see that the price charged is more that worth it!
