Fit_Sport_Xtrm_101.jpgUg. Nothing good to report on the gasoline front. In my neighborhood I saw prices jump 16 cents in one day, from $4.19 in the morning when I drove in and $4.35 on my way home. Statewide the average price of a gallon of regular is $4.39, according to AAA, and it's only the beginning of the summer, when pump prices typically rise.

We're in for a long, hard summer folks. Thank goodness the folks at Consumer Reports sent me their July mag, which features reviews of gas-saving cars and fuel-saving tips. Here's the skinny.

They calculated the price per mpg to create this ranking of cars that deliver the best fuel economy for your buck. Honda Fit sport (above), Honda Fit base model, Toyota Prius, Mazda3 i, Toyota Prius touring, Nissan Versa 1.8 SL, Honda Civic hybrid, Honda Civic EX, Hyundai Elantra GLS and Scion tC. If you are buying a used car, many of these models top their list.

Other quick tips...

...the story says don't bother with gadgets that claim to boost mpg and make sure to inflate your tires properly. Sagging ones eat up extra gas so check them once a month.

Consider switching from premium gas to regular. Even if your owners manual recommends premium you can probably use regular, the story says. That's because many modern engines can detect the difference between regular and premium and adjust. If your manual says premium is required, stick to the expensive stuff. If you are not sure, call your dealer and ask.
