Back to school penny power
The back to school specials are rolling out already, starting with Office Max's "Penny Power" campaign. They are selling a few school supplies for a penny when you buy one or more of the item to start with.
Some of the deals: glue sticks and small scissors are buy one get a second for a penny. Buy two 100-packs of tacks or two 12-packs of sticky notes and get a third for a penny.
OfficeMax also has penny deals for home office supplies, including packing tape and shipping boxes, butterfly clips, bubble wrap and poster putty.
A story in Advertising Age explains how the store is making waves with the penny campaign. "When developing the back-to-school concept with lead agency Escape Pod, Chicago, the retailer decided it could not ignore the state of the economy," the story says. "But it also didn't want to approach the issue too seriously.
"If you can make people smile through their pain, I think you actually have a better chance of connecting with them than if you remind them that they're in misery," said Bob Thacker, senior VP-marketing.
If it saves be a buck, I'm happy. On the other hand, retailers like Target and Wal-Mart usually have great specials, too. Find an OfficeMax near you.

OfficeMax may have a current savings campaign going, but its over-all record for savings, particularly for school supplies, is sketchy at best. As a former teacher with LAUSD, who regularly bought supplies for my low-income students (folders, special scissors, and the like), I found the best bargains at Target, Office Depot and, occasionally, Staples. Rarely did OfficeMax compete with their specials.
I had a student supplies table in the classroom, which I set up every year. Many items carried over from year to year, but many had to be replaced. It was important for me to have my students organize their work in folders, and I didn't have the right to impose that cost on parents, many of whom worked 3 or more jobs just to house and feed their families. I knew many teachers who did the same thing.
