Summer safety quiz

ChildSafety.jpgAbout.com has a nifty summer safety quiz for parents. You can take the easy quiz with four questions or really check your know-how with the expert quiz with 20 questions.

Topics cover pool safety, sunscreen usage, bug repellent, fireworks, and food poisoning. I took the expert quiz and got 16 out of 20 right. Beat that!

Here's one sample question: If your child usually begins to burn in 15 minutes, what minimum SPF should you use if he will be outside for 3 hours?

a) 5
b) 10
c) 15
d) 25

The answer...

...is C. A sunscreen's SPF number means you can stay out in the sun that many times longer than it usually takes to get a sunburn. A child who burns in 15 minutes needs a a sunscreen that will let him stay out in the sun for 12 times as long without burning (15 mins x 12 = 3 hours). So the minimum SPF he needs is 12 and C was the closest to that without going under and risking a burn.
