When to buy baby shoes

When do you need to start buying shoes for your kids? Not as soon as you think, according to a story in the September issue of Shop Smart magazine.

"The only reason to put shoes on children is to protect their feet from stuff on the ground," the story says. Shoes that claim to provide arch support or inserts are a bunch of bull. Here is what you do need to know about kids' shoes, from infants to age 3+.

Infants 1-12 months
Socks will do the trick for babies, but if you do give in and buy a pair of shoes avoid stiff pairs that could pinch toes and any pairs with buckles or bows on the toes. They will irritate your child's feet as they crawl.

New walkers 12-24 months
Babes getting their land legs don't need support from their shoes like adults, the story says. Pick flexible shoes like a pair of cheap sneakers. More pricey shoes likely won't offer any extra benefit.

Toddlers 2-3 years
Your tot is ready to move onto the real deal, be that sneakers, sandals, or whatever your child likes. Steer them towards pairs with nonskid, flexible soles and good ventilation. Avoid high heels or stiff, unforgiving pairs.

Active kids 3+
Kids can wear most types of shoes but chose ones with good cushioning. If you kid plays a sport, choose shoes for that activity.
