You say it's your birthday

FirstBirthday.jpgWell it's my birthday too, now! The Bargain Hunter turns one today. Thank you all for reading it and making the blog one of the most popular and fastest-growing at the Daily News. In the past year I have become a real cheapskate!

To serve a surprising number of readers outside of the Valley, we created a Bargain Hunter National Edition, which you can read by clicking on the right side of www.insidesocal.com/bargain.

To celebrate the blog's birthday I am eating a donut (which I bought with a coupon). I also highlighted my favorite deals below.

800-GOOG-411. Businesses listings are free from any phone and ads are rare. Very useful when you are out and about and need to find the nearest 7-Eleven or Citibank.

Zanos Pizza Kitchen's $6 lunch special (which was a $5 Lincoln Lunch when I first wrote about it) in Woodland Hills. It includes a pizza slice, salad, garlic knots and soda.

Public libraries. Barnes & Noble is for using the bathroom!

eBates.com. I've gotten at least three "big fat checks" from them just by registering on their site and clicking through to retailers from their home page.

My Nitty Gritty Grocery List. Who has the best grocery prices? Costco? Trader Joe's? Vons? Food 4 Less? My comparison experiment resonated with readers and produced results that may surprise you.

You have done a terrific job writing this column for the past year! It is really helpful and lots of fun to read. Please keep up the great work, Julia!

I second Anonymous' comments. Your column is super and I look forward to reading each day's tips. Thanks for the savings, Julia! Happy Birthday! PS Regarding the grocery price comparison, the 99¢ Store really does have some great produce/dairy items, but they're not always constant so it's understandable that they couldn't be included. Still, it's worth the time to stop in IF you can resist buying the other things because, after all, they're only 99¢. What a great sales ploy! CC
