1-gallon vacations and other travel tips
Looking for a "stay-cation" that is restful and fits your budget? Check out a blog called Tanks for the Memories from the Pasadena Star News, a sister paper to the Daily News. Tanks for the Memories is all about one gallon vacations, but it has a lot of general travel news and tips.
One post links to state park trail maps so you can find a great hike online and not rely on the ranger to recommend one when you arrive. Just in case you were wondering what the bargain angle was, hikes are an awfully cheap and fun thing to do, especially if you pack a lunch or find a swimming hole!
Other stay-cation ideas:
+ Take an all-day cooking class. Learn new recipes and eat a lot of good food! In Los Angeles I like The New School of Cooking in Culver City. To find classes in your area Google "cooking classes" and the city you live in. If you Google cooking schools you will find programs geared towards professionals.
+ A trip to the spa. (It is almost Spa Week, but more on that later).
+ Plan a day around all the fun, touristy things you never have time for in your own town. A trip to a museum? Lunch at a new restaurant? A garden or art tour? If your budget allows, stay in a hotel for one night to extend the trip.
+ Organize a pot luck at a park or beach. Hosting a party outdoors saves you the trouble of cleaning your home. Use a free online organizing and RSVP tool like Evite.com or MyPunchBowl.com. Save even more time by asking two or three close friends if they want to co-host. That way you can delegate jobs like reserving the space, planning games for kids, etc.
+ Hire a personal chef to cook all your meals for a weekend. It lightens your load and leaves more time for relaxation. Plus, new exciting meals! Consider inviting friends over for a dinner party one night. Find one for hire near you on HireAChef.com.
+ Brainstorm all the things you love to do on vacation - golf, shop, explore, etc - and find ways to do them near home. Come Monday you will look so happy and revived that your co-workers will think you were in Hawaii!
