Head to a beauty school for a deal

Student Hair Cut.pngThe risk factor is higher than going to your local, trusted salon, but keep beauty schools in mind when you want to save a buck. They often offer discounted services for cuts, makeup, and nails. How else are their students going to learn?

Find a local beauty school near you at BeautySchoolsDirectory.com.

Some questions to keep in mind when you call your local beauty school:
+ What services do they offer and at what price?
+ How much experience does the technician you are making an appointment with have?
+ Do they have experience cutting hair that is curly/thick/thin (or whatever type hair you have)
+ How long will the cut take? (if it is during a class, it may take longer than usual)
+ What happens if you are unhappy with the result?

Readers in LA might remember last year I blogged about the Paul Mitchell school in Sherman Oaks, where students give hair cuts for $12. Make an appointment at (818) 380-8120.

I went to Paul Mitchell last week for partial highlights and a cut. I had to take a Phase One tech because all the Phase Two's were booked since they were graduating the next week. I had a Phase Two before who did an excellent job - went from long to short hair - cut was superb! This time it was HORRIBLE! My highlighting ended up white, not blond. She did not check on the process, instead, she was busy eating birthday cake and chatting, she went 20 minutes over the time she said it would take. My cut was horrible! Her supervisor never checked once when she was applying the color or doing my cut! He only came by once and told her that she was 'standing the right way'!! I witnessed alot of students doing nothing but their own hair, and chatting! chatting! chatting! I was upset with the results and all I got was a thank you for giving them the opportunity!! The clincher - this all cost me $65.00, plus and additional $17.00 for parking since it took longer than the two hour validation limit!!!! I had such a wonderful experience the first time, but this last time will be the LAST time I ever go there again!!!
