Lincoln Lunch: hot dogs

| | Comments (9) |

ChiliDog.JPG(not my actual lunch) I'm not a hot dog person, but getting a Lincoln Lunch at The Stand in Woodland Hills has been on my list of places to check out for awhile. I walked to their newish Woodland Hills location with two colleagues and found a bustling eatery with a menu that seemed expansive considering they sell hot dogs.

Turns out these folks take hot dogs very seriously. Dogs with bleu cheese, dogs with neon relish, dogs with baked beans and a handful of classics. They also sell burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Alcohol sales are pending.

The line was long but moved quickly. After you order and pay they give you a buzzer and you seat yourself. The buzzer lights up when your food is ready, which helps servers find you and deliver your grub.

We snagged one of two booths inside, which is a bit loud. There is outside seating, too.

My $4.50 Chili dog came very fast. It was hot and loaded with chili, diced onions, cheese and tomatoes. The white bun was warm and very fluffy. The dog snapped when I bit into it and was overall very tasty, but nothing to daydream about. A heap of crispy potato chips rounded out my meal.

The Stand has a pickle bar much like fresh Mex places have salsa bars. Other Lincoln Lunch options include the Stand dog, all but one of their "classic" dogs, two different sausage dogs, a chili-slaw dog and a chili cheese knish.

I would go back to The Stand because the food was good and very quick. My only real criticism is that the line was disorganized and hungry customers ended up getting in the way of servers delivering food to tables outside and customers exiting the restaurant. A few lane lines would have made everyone happier.

Visit them at 5780 Canoga Ave in Woodland Hills. (818) 710-0400. They also have locations in Encino, Westwood Village and Century City. Look out for their $1 dog night Mondays in Encino!

Would it kill them to offer a veggie dog?

I've eaten at the Stand in Encino (my credit union used to be on that site), and liked the hot dogs very much. I agree about the disorganized "lines," and think they could be run more efficiently, as the place is usually crowded. And I agree with Steven... a veggie offering or two would please my vegetarian friends.

I attended a function there recently and had a Veggie Burger; since we didn't order off the menu, I can't say if it is on the menu or not but they do have veggie items somewhere?

I love hot dogs. I have not been here yet. Hopefully, I will try it soon. If anyone ever gets up north to Berkeley, check out Top Dog on Durant Ave. It is the BEST!! They also have a few locations in Oakland.

Now that you opened the door on hot dogs, fair is fair...right?

So, other places for Lincoln Lunches with Hot Dogs (and other items) are Costco and Sam's Club!

Both Sam's and Costco seem to have this constant price war battle between each other over the price...they both ofer a hot dog or polish sausage and a soda with refills for an amazing $1.50, plus tax!

Costco continues to offer a true Kosher product from either Hebrew National or Sinai 48 (depending on location), while Sam's went on shrink-ray and while not reducing the size of the hot dog, it's no longer kosher. Sam's switched to Nathan's. Both the hot dog and polish sausage are beef, just not kosher and to me do not taste as good now as what Costco continues to offer.

On the other hand, Sam's includes a 32 oz. soda with refills, while Costco includes a 20 oz. soda with refills.

Now before people say I can't go because I'm not a member, you have two ways around that problem:

1) Find a Costco or Sam's Club that has an outdoor food court, therefore no membership is required (they never ask for a membership card at the food court window).

2) If the food court is located inside, then just say you need to go to the pharmacy. Why? Under a little known California law going back to the days of Fedco and FedMart, a membership is not required in order to purchase a prescription from a club store, and the price of the prescrioption cannot be any higher than what a member pays! (Another Bargain Hunter deal!)

So, instead of going to the pharmacy, just head to the food court and you've got yourself a Lincoln Lunch. In fact, nothing at either Costco or Sam's food court is above $5.00 (not inlcuding whole pizzas).

The Bargain Hunter can even have a salad at Sam's if she desires!

By the way, I really enjoy the kosher dogs at The Stand, especially the option to throw them on the grill!

Wow! Your regular, SoCalRetailSlut, is really on top of everything. I agree about the hot dogs at Costco. They're really tasty and have a crunch. I've even taken them home, and added chili and/or cheese to them. A quick nuke, and they're hot again. I'm fine with the smaller drink, and sometimes order the frozen yogurt swirl for dessert, still staying within the Lincoln lunch limit. You can't beat the price most places. Thanks for the info on using the pharmacy and/or food court. I didn't know this before.
