What I learned from the MAC makeup girl
As I mentioned in a post earlier today, a few weeks ago I went to the MAC store to get my makeup done for a new Bargain Hunter photo. (A formal job costs $50 but on a slow day you can usually talk a salesperson into quickly showing you a few things. It helps if you make it clear you are interesting in buying some products.)
While the saleswoman was making me up she had me hold a mirror up so I could see exactly what she was doing. She also explained every step along the way. Here are some of the best tips I learned from her.
+ When choosing a foundation or powder to even out your skin, match the shade to your neck, not your face.
+ Applying foundation or powder with a brush will leave a lighter coat than applying with a foam pad.
+ When applying eye shadow start by...
...covering the whole eyelid with a neutral shade. Then chose a darker shade and like a window wiper, brush it on back and forth in the fold of your lid, starting with from the outer edge and going about half or a third of the way towards your eye duct.
+ You can use a dark or accent eye shadow to line your lids, instead of a pencil or liquid liner. Just take a slanted brush with a firm edge, dip it into the desired color, and poke it along the rim of your eyes. Poke the rim, don't stroke.
+ When applying blush, use downward strokes starting from the upper edge of your cheek near your eye and going down to the middle of your cheek.
+ Using lip liner will help keep lipstick in place and define your lips.
+ Always follow the natural line of your lips. Outlining a bigger area to make your lips plumper will only prepare you for the circus.

The older I get, the less makeup I use. I was happy to learn how to correct a couple of things I'd been doing wrong (applying blush, for example), as well as how to determine face tone by using the neck as a guide. Now I might even give the eyeliner trick using eye shadow, as I don't like using eyeliner. I have a tendency to rub my eyes sometimes, so there's less chance of a raccoon look with the shadow. Thanks for sharing the info.
I can't believe they charge! I got full makeup done twice last summer, and eyes done once for no charge (I was trying to figure out color schemes...and I'm a makeup minimalist, so I don't know anything). Maybe because it was in preparation for my wedding?
