A money savvy mom shares her tips
I had a fun chat with fellow bargain hunter Laura Rowley, an author who writes for Yahoo! Finance and a Disney Family site. Some of her tips were so good I'm saving them for upcoming Bargain Hunter stories in the paper! Here are a few tips to whet your appetite.
+ Shop online at Sam's Club using their Click and Pull feature. You order groceries online, they bag it and you pick it up 24 hours later.
It saves you time and money because you eliminate impulse buys! There is no surcharge to use this service though you do have to be a member. Now until October 26 you can join Sam's Club for $10.
+ Always ask your doctor for generic medication. If you forget...
...ask the pharmacist to call the doctor's office and get the OK for generics before they fill the prescription. To find the best price, call the pharmacy ahead of time and ask how much they charge for your prescription.
+ Laura also told me how she and her family are preparing for the worst. "I'm beefing up my emergency fund," she said. Two months of living expenses used to be fine, but now she wants to have more cash set aside.
Laura is meeting with a financial planner to talk about how she should allocate her 401(k), taking into account how many years she and her husband have until retirement.
She is playing it very safe with her daughters' college savings accounts by moving some of it into bonds, especially for her oldest child who will need the money in a handful of years.
But Laura is also buying stock because she believes eventually the American economy will recover and American businesses will continue to create products that are innovative and in demand.
