Lincoln Lunch: Chicken Shawerma
(not my actual lunch) I dragged myself out to Burbank yesterday to find a Lincoln Lunch suggested by a reader. Burbank seems very far away, but when I arrive it is so pleasant I think, I could live here.
I headed to Greek Knight Restaurant, which serves Greek, Armenian and Mediterranean food, from a bustling strip on San Fernando Road. Looking over the menu I started to worry because the prices were well above my $5 Lincoln Lunch threshhold.
Then I reached the back page, which listed five sandwiches for $4.50 and a few sides that fit my budget. I ordered the chicken shawerma at the counter and found a seat in the back.
Greek Knight has super high ceilings and blood red walls decorated with paintings that depict...
...knightings and other pseudo-European scenes. Chairs have high backs and are covered in cream-colored cloth, giving it the feel of a restaurant with higher prices that it actually has.
Most plates of food ran $8 to $12. Beer is $2.75 to $3.50. Margaritas are $4, cosmos and other cocktails were $4.50.
The kitchen is at the front of the store, up against a window from the street, which means you can watch the wait staff preparing your food. I watched for about five minutes before my food came.
A hot, fluffy pita held a generous helping of well-seasoned chicken bits, a spread of humus, a few tomato slices and a sprinkling of lettuce. It looked incredible and tasted just as good.
I also ordered a slice of Armenian pizza for $1.95 because I was curious. What came was a circular piece of flat bread lightly covered with a mixture of finely ground beef and spices, folded in half. It was interesting, but probably not something I would order again.
Greek Knight was nearly full when I sat down. Seems like everyone else knows about the eatery, too.
Yelpers have Greek Knight the thumbs up.
Caveats: prices on the takeout menu are slightly lower than menus in the restaurant.
Visit Greek Knight at 138 North San Fernando Blvd. (818) 845-4516.

You should try the (beef) shish kabob instead of the chicken. Knight uses an excellent little peice of filet in it !
