Lincoln Lunch: sushi
I was thrilled to find a super cheap sushi restaurant in the same plaza as where I found a Chinese Lincoln Lunch last week. The menu at SushiMac said each roll is $2.75, which let me to believe that the place sold really crappy sushi or really cheap sushi. Or possibly both.
My frequent lunch partner begged off so I ventured out on my own. At 11:40 am, just ten minutes after opening, SushiMac was already a third full. Good sign. The small sushi joint plays loud music (store policy, a sign informs customers) and embraces efficiency as a means to offer cheap sushi.
As soon as I sat down at the counter, the lone server handed me a menu, which doubles as an ordering form. Using a pencil from a jar on the counter, which is where customers also find wasabi, pickled ginger, chopsticks, napkins, soy sauce, and dishes to hold soy sauce, I ordered...
...one spicy salmon roll (8 pieces) and one California/salmon roll (4 pieces).
My food arrived on small circular dishes moments later. The sushi chef was so quick and I was so busy checking out the place I did not see him make the food even though the kitchen is in the center of the oblong counter, which is the only place to sit.
The 8-piece spicy salmon roll was tasty but portions were smaller than usual. The 4-piece California/salmon roll used fake crab and each roll was medium-sized.
I purposely ate slow so that the meal would register in my belly before I was finished. Even so, I was tempted to order a third roll (another $2.75, including tax) because my stomach had room. But being on the hunt for a Lincoln Lunch I asked for the check.
In the end, you really do get what you pay for, but in these tough times it's nice to have the option to pay a little less.
SushiMac only accepts cash so come with dough. The restaurant does not offer a full menu typical of sushi restaurants but sells 60 different rolls and sushi pieces plus edamame. Visit them at 15030 Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks. (818) 986-6450. Yelpers mostly gave it the thumbs up.

This place is GREAT! They also have one by the Beverly Center (3rd street) and one on the westside (Sawtelle). My husband and I always make a trip there when we're in the neighborhood. It does get crowded, which is a good bad thing. Good-because everyone likes the place and bad-because everyone like the place! :o)
I've been to he one across from the Beverly Center, and it is delicious! The portions are a little bit smaller than normal, but still amazingly delicious. I usually get 2-3 rolls, and take the rest home... it works out great to-go!
