Best turkey prices
Prices are out for Thanksgiving turkeys! Every Tuesday the newspaper publishes grocery ads, and this week all reveal their prices for big birds. Here's a recap:
Albertsons - $.99/lb for a fresh 10-22lb Foster Farms Turkey with $10 minimum purchase and an Albertsons free frequent shopper card. Price effective Wednesday, November 19 through Thanksgiving. You also need the coupon in today's paper, though stores often have sales flyers at the entrance.
Vons - A Safeway brand or Manor House Turkey up to 16 lbs is $4.88 (making a bird that is exactly 16lbs $.30/lb) with a $25 minimum purchase and a Vons free frequent shopper card. While supplies last. Birds that are more than 16lbs are $6.88. To get the $.30/lb price on bigger birds, it needs to be at least 23 lbs.
Also at Vons, a frozen Butterball Turkey up to 16 lbs is $7.88 (or $.49/lb for a 16 lb bird) with a $25 minimum purchase and a Vons free frequent shopper card. While supplies last. Birds that are more...
... than 16 lbs are $9.88 (so the bigger, the cheaper per lb).
Ralphs - $.37/lb for a 12-24 lb frozen Tendergold Turkey with $25 minimum purchase and a Ralphs free frequent shopper card. Price effective Wednesday, November 19 through Thanksgiving.
A private selection frozen Butter Based turkey is $.57/lb with $25 minimum purchase and a Ralphs free frequent shopper card. Price effective Wednesday, November 19 through Thanksgiving.
Costco - kosher, organic and free-range hen turkeys that are 14 lbs and up are $90.
Gelsons - I came up empty after a quick search, but expect high quality birds at higher prices than the chain grocers.
Smart & Final - A first Street young based frozen turkey between 10 and 24 lbs is $.49/lb with $25 minimum purchase and a Smart & Final frequent shopper card. While supplies last.
So Vons and Ralphs have the best prices for frozen birds. Caveats: Nearly all stores limit one bird per shopper.

Love the column!!
I have been making the rounds, shopping for the traditional Thanksgiving offerings and realize how much the prices vary.. its ridiculous! Its almost as if there's a food war going on!!
I was at Trader Joe's on Sunday, Ralph's on Monday, and Food For Less today. WOW - what a difference in the cost for the same basic ingredients.
A box of Trader Joes cornbread stuffing mix was 3.99 each, at Ralph's the Mrs. Cubbison's stuffing mix (the same ingredients) was 2 for 3.00, and then at Food for Less the Mrs. Cubbison's stuffing was 1.78 each. Stove Top stuffing mix was 1.00 a box at Ralph's.
FYI - The Gelson's birds are 4.99 per lb. (These are the ones cooked and prepared to go a la carte.) Ouch!!
I just bought a turkey at Super Target in Orange Park, FL for 78 cents a pound.
Julia and I went to vons to buy a butterball turkey with the 9.88 deal. They mostly had 12 - 16 lb birds on display in the frozen and thawed sections. Mark in the meat department looked in the back to find us a big frozen bird -- twenty-four pounds! That works out to ~ $0.41 / lb.
I've got my work cut out for me getting this thawed and prepped, let alone cooked, for Thursday. I may even skip flipping it -- the logistics of flipping a 300F degree 24 lb bird seem daunting at best.
I'm lucky to have so many things to celebrate and be thankful for this Thanksgiving day -- time with my wonderful wife, food with friends, a sunny weekend at the beach in November, health and opportunity and the support and love of family. And a big ole' bird! Best wishes to everyone!
