Lincoln Lunch: Depot dogs

Lincoln Lunch Depot Dogs 11 2008.jpg(my actual lunch!) A failed Lincoln Lunch attempt led me to fall back on an old tip from a colleague. Try the hot dogs at Home Depot for a quick and cheap meal.

I zipped over to the construction warehouse on Variel in Woodland Hills and found a small lunch cart in the parking lot that seemed popular with...construction workers. Surprise!

The menu was limited with just three options priced above the $5 limit of a Lincoln Lunch, so-called because President Lincoln is on the fiver. I ordered a spicy hot dog with chips and a soda for $5.

A regular hot dog is $4 and a jumbo dog is $4.50 Both come with chips and a soda. There are seven different types of chips to chose from, including Lay's, Doritos, and Fritos.

Service was quick but...

...the two outdoor tables adjacent to the cart were taken. With my dog nestled in tinfoil, I jumped in my car and drove to a nearby park.

There I found the hot dog sticking out of the bun on both sides. It was cut in half down the middle, lightly grilled, and topped with ketchup and diced raw onions. Mustard and relish were options I declined. The bun was sturdy and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

The hot dog was tasty, though it would have been hotter had I eaten it at the lunch cart. It was not spicy, following in the American tradition of "spicy" menu items lacking spice. The chips and soda were a nice treat for a meal at this price.

As a bonus, the hot dog made me popular with a passing Chihuahua, which wiggled its way onto my lap in hopes I would share a bite. I got to pet him for 15 seconds before he realized I wasn't sharing.

Visit Jonathan's Good Eats #2 cart at the Home Depot on 6345 Variel Ave. in Woodland Hills.

How about Costco for a hot dog? They beat this price and you have a choice of a hot dog or Polish sausage along w/a soda. You may also request sourkrout on the side along w/the usual ketsup, mustard, relish and fresh, diced onion. I believe the total price is $1.50 and these are large hot dogs.

How about the hot dogs at Costco? My spouse and I go for lunch before shopping. Two dogs and two drinks cost us $3.25. Can't beat that!

Costco has way better hot dogs as they have Hebrew National which are the best tasting because they are 100% beef with no fillers. I love Costco's turkey wrap too. If you want an awesome dessert, they have those yummy deeset bars dipped in choicolate and nuts.
