Not quite a Lincoln Lunch: sushi
After a week of eating nothing but carbs, I was ready for a light, vegetable-heavy meal. A reader suggested 2 Die For Sushi. Not exactly what I was thinking of, but cheap sushi? I cannot refuse. Sushi that is a Lincoln Lunch? Yeah, right.
But maybe, just maybe, it would fit my $5 lunch budget. If that meant testing a new sushi restaurant, I was willing to make the sacrifice.
As it turns out, the price was like a second cousin to a Lincoln lunch - close to being related to a lunch that is close to being a Lincoln Lunch. Translation: $8.52 with tax and tip.
The lunch special was $6.95 and included a choice of two items from the following list. Chicken, beef, salmon or sesame teriyaki, mixed tempura, sushi (3 pieces), California roll (4 pieces), spicy tuna roll (4 pieces) or sashimi (3 pieces). It also included miso soup, rice and salad. A three dish lunch combo is $8.95.
I chose the salmon sashimi (you can also get tuna or albacore) and the chicken teriyaki. The miso soup came immediately and was hot with tiny bits of portabello mushroom in it.
The rest of my food came just as I thought about checking my watch. It was served on a...
...long white dish about as long as my forearm.
Long, thin strips of salmon sashimi were surprisingly smooth and flavorful for the price. A green salad was topped with a traditional Japanese carrot and ginger dressing, which I love. The teriyaki chicken was tasty and came on a large leaf of lettuce. I tore off pieces and rolled them up with strips of chicken and a bit of rice.
One thing that I love about eating at sushi restaurants, aside from the fact that I love sushi, is that you occasionally get a freebie. This must have been my lucky day because my meal also came with a second salad of shredded cabbage and carrots that had been lightly sauteed. Two pieces of mashed potatoes and vegetables had been breaded and lightly fried were served with a dollop of cream sauce.
2 Die For Sushi is painted in sunset colors and has many booths. Loud, melodramatic Japanese music played over the loudspeaker. The service was good but not exceptional. Parking in back.
