Thanksgiving turkey for $.41/lb

FrozenButterballTurkey.jpgHubby and I went shopping for Thanksgiving over the weekend and capitalized on a deal I wrote about last week. Vons had one of the best prices for turkeys - $7.88 for a frozen Butterball Turkey up to 16 lbs and $9.88 for one bigger than 16 lbs - so we headed over to our local store.

We found a lot of Butterball turkeys and flipped over the frozen birds to check their weight until our fingers turned white. They were all about 12 pounds each, which did not satisfy Hubby, who is in charge of cooking the bird when we celebrate Thanksgiving at home. He is one fine bird-cooker and he looks forward to leftovers almost more than the actual meal. So big birds are a must.

Luckily an employee from the meat department walked by as we were giving up finding one in the freezer. Were they bigger birds...

...in the back, we asked, explaining that we wanted to take advantage of the Butterball deal for frozen birds weighing more than 16 lbs.

Did he have one that was 20 lbs, I asked.

Hubby look at me. Ahem. Did he have one that was 24 lbs, Hubby said.

He went into the back room to check. A few minutes later he returned with two ginormous frozen birds, both a hair over 24 pounds. Perfect.

I can already taste the leftovers. There will be turkey noodle soup and turkey pot pie before the week is out.
