Free haircuts and half price salon services for seniors

woman-getting-haircut.jpgA savvy reader named Cece sent me a fabulous tip recently. The cosmetology department at West Valley Occupational Career Center offers free haircuts on Monday and half price services for seniors aged 55-plus every Tuesday and Wednesday.

The details are a bit complicated but it's a great deal so listen up. Thanks to May Lahham in the cosmetology department for explaining it to me.

Twice a year WVOC holds an advanced haircutting class for licensed professionals. The professionals spend the first part of the class learning the cuts, then they try out their new skills on you, which is why they are free.

The free cuts are Monday from 10 am to 1:30 pm, walk ins only. You must be at least 10 years old to get the free cut. The free cuts happen...

...twice a year for 8 weeks at a time. The current session ends Feb. 2.

Seniors can get half-price salon services year round at the center every Tuesday and Wednesday. With the discount, haircuts are $3, a roller set is $3, perms are $9, manicures are $2. Note, all chemical services, like highlights and tint touch ups, are NOT 50% off. See hours below.

For more info call (818) 346-3540 x 251. The center is at 6200 Winnetka Ave.. Go to bungalow 3 or 4 for free haircuts and bungalow 16 for the senior discounts. The center does not take appointments. Their hours are Tue to Fri 9:30 am to 1pm. Tue to Thur 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Fri from 3:15 pm to 6:30 pm. The Mon free cuts are 10 am to 1:30 pm. They do not have weekend hours.

I suggest calling to confirm ahead of time because the school is closed for winter recess and holidays.

Thanks, Cece!

Any chance you can have a senior day and list stores that offer discounts to seniors?

Ellen,
That's a great idea for a theme day! Thank you for the suggestion. Give me a few weeks and I will see what I can do. ~Julia
