Lincoln Lunch: croissant sandwich

USADonutRoastBeefSandwich.JPGA reader named Marlyn tipped me off to a Lincoln Lunch right under my nose. When I found her recommendation it was immediately clear why I had passed the eatery many times. The place, USA Donuts Croissants & Bagels, shares space in a strip mall with an auto repair shop, a laundromat, and an adult video store.

Strange bedfellows? You betcha.

My chances of getting a good lunch were slim, I thought as I parked next to a dumpster, which I preferred to an open slot in front of Red Hot Video. A poster in the window left no doubt about what they considered hot. I just wanted a sandwich.

I continued onto USA Donuts, where trays of sweet treats greet customers. Inside it was warm and smelled of sugar. My luck...

The menu had six lunch choices and all of them were $5 or less, what I call a Lincoln Lunch because Lincoln is on the fiver. A ham, turkey, or pastrami croissant sandwich was $3.95. Tuna, roast beef or a sub was $4.25. Tax included. A soda and bag of chips are a dollar extra.

I ordered a roast beef sandwich and was surprised at how many extras it came with, including cheese, tomato, lettuce, mayo, mustard, onions, a pickle, and jalapeno peppers. The friendly server promised to remember my particular order and headed to a back room.

She reappeared not long after and handed me a warm package. I paid at the counter and sat at one of three small tables. My sandwich was as delicious as it looked. A decent amount of meat and lettuce surrounded by a flaky croissant. A slice of cheese was nothing special, but the lettuce had a slight vinegary tang that I liked. A few slices of red onion provided just enough kick without ruining my breath.

With the change from my fiver I bought a chocolate glazed donut on my way out. Yum.

Visit USA Donuts at 7041 Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Canoga Park.

There's a handy USA Donuts on the SW corner of Burbank and Kester, between Van Nuys Blvd. and Sepulveda. It's been there for years, and the owners are super. The donuts are always fresh, with a good selection. And the sandwich items are great for a quick, handy lunch.
