Visit the Consumers Union page for gift cards to check what state laws govern your gift card. The site has info about fees on holiday gift cards, common pitfalls, and stats on how many folks have gift cards just paying long term rent in their wallet. (Including me! Oh wait, that's a bad thing).
Protections vary, but I do know California has some of the best laws for consumers - if you are lucky enough to live in the Golden State.
If you have $10 or less on a card, for instance, you can take it into the retailer and get cash for it. Most gift cards, like those for a particular store, will never expire unless they have less than $5 on them and have been dormant for 24 months.



With retailers filing for bankruptcy and shutting down left and right, gift cards aren't looking so hot these days.
