What I want v. what I'm getting for Xmas. How about you?
I know you remember at least one Christmas morning when you tore into your presents only to find the thing you wanted most was not among them. It may not matter as much as adults, but the contrast between what you truly covet for Christmas and what you end up getting can be awfully amusing.
With that in mind, I invite you to share what you want for Christmas or Hanukkah (and don't think you can get away with "the company of loved ones"). Compare that with what you will actually end up getting. I will highlight the best entries in a post next week.
Here is mine.
My Dad will get me a copy of "Reporting Iraq: An Oral History of the War by the Journalists who Covered It," just like I asked. He is very good at following specific requests.
From Hubby I want a coupon book for things like "taking out the recycling," "doing the dishes really well" and "driving without talking about other cars." I may get a stuffed animal instead. I love him, but he can be a real sap.
From Santa I want a new cell phone with Internet capabilities so I can blog everywhere, which will give me more gray hair and the frazzled look of someone who checks their email every minute - no 537 times a minute. I'm not worried about my health, but I feel guilty asking for it because it is not very bargain hunterly.
What I will get is a ski trip to Mammoth. No surprise, we are staying with a friend's cousin to save moolah. We will go downhill skiing and I want to go snow shoeing or cross country skiing, too. Whenever I think of the trip I imagine myself alone a forest, crunching through the snow, breathing in the trees.

the problem im having this year is that all i really want is my husband:) but i guess these really great diamond earrings i saw on kays will do :P christmas just doeant hold the charm it once did at the age of 10 when all i really wanted was a rat and a cd player...
oh and julie kay.com has something called previously owned treasure, where they sell jewlery that i guess has been returned, fixes it and sells at a great discount- great for those that are on a tight budget but want to give jewelery :)
Shasta, a rat and a CD player! Those were the days. :) But I can relate to your sentiment about missing your husband. Sparkly jewelry is a substitute you will have to accept. ~Julia
BHB-
great post. we all struggle between straight up asking people what they want..no surprises upon opening up, or guessing-and including a gift receipt.
one of the best gifts i got was 2 years ago when i asked my secret santa (indirectly) for what i really wanted-money to donate to the women's clinic that i volunteered at that was desperate for funds (www.WomensChoiceClinic.org). on christmas morning when i opened up an envelope and found 5 20's and a note from my secret santa, i was so happy i cried.
(thanks John)
love,
your NY sis
Aicha,
You are right. What it really boils down to is how much of a surprise both people want the present to be. It is amazing when a giver surprises a person with a present they really wanted, but can be such a disappointment when things go amiss. Balancing the two takes effort. ~Julia
