Lincoln Lunch: hot dog and tater tots
(my actual lunch) My favorite fashionista recommended I check out Fab Dogs in Reseda for a Lincoln Lunch that would extend my binge on rich holiday food. Seeing how I ate half a Toblerone chocolate bar this morning, I decided my return to healthy eating could wait until the new year.
A positive review on the entrance to Fab Dogs boded well, as did other munching customers. Inside, a menu offered 22 hot dogs, specialty dogs and double dogs. Free toppings include grilled onions, fresh garlic, raw onions, sweet relish, dill relish, jalapeños, sliced dill pickles, and celery salt. Other toppings cost $.35 to $.95. If you are not in the mood, there are almost a dozen burgers to choose from.
I chose the $2.75 Ripper dog, a house specialty that is built to split open while it deep fries. I wanted mine with grilled peppers, fresh garlic and...
...grilled onions. To round out my meal, pictured above, I ordered a small basket of tater tots and a can of soda, a combo that is $2.25 when you order any dog or burger. You can sub out the tots for regular fries.
I paid at the counter - my meal was $5.79 - and sat at one of three small tables. There are also three counter seats in the tiny eatery. Fab Dogs is so small that when the cook wanted to let me know that the Ripper takes five minutes to prepare, he lean over the counter and was practically sitting at my table.
My food came soon enough. The Ripper was large and had a deep red and gold shine. Its soft, meaty flavor was delicious and the crust was thick and chewy, not crispy, as some have described it. Very tasty. A small basket of tater tots were crunchy and hot - much better than the ones I ate in my elementary school cafeteria.
There are many other Lincoln Lunches on the menu. Hot dogs are $2.75 to $5.75, burgers are $3.25 to $5.60. Sides are $1.50 to $2.50.
Visit Fab Dogs at 6747 Tampa Ave. in Reseda. (818) 344-4336. Thanks, Connie!

I grew up in the SFV and currently work here and have never heard of this place. It sounds yum, yum, yummy - I shall have to check it out!

Did the owner share with you the brand of hot dogs he uses?
I bet they are Sarbrett, a brand owned by Marathon Enterprises from New Jersy, but the plant for Sarbrett is in the Bronx.
Too bad that their dogs (the Sarbrett dogs) are not available for retail sale in the stores here in southern California. At least, I have not seen them for sale here.
Word of caution, if my hunch is correct and they do indeed serve Sarbrett hot dogs, Sarbrett products ARE NOT kosher.

No, but I remember that the advertised the dogs are from Jersey. So it could be Sarbrett. ~Julia
