Stop worrying about money
I got this idea from your answers to my recent poll about 2009 financial goals. I had no idea you were all so worried about money!
Here are a few ways to reduce pocketbook stress.
- Think about what you can control. Do your best not to stress about what is out of your hands.
- What can you do about the things you can control? Brainstorm every idea that comes to mind and edit out the lame ones later. I find when I "say yes" to all the ideas that pop into my brain, in the long run I end up with better solutions.
- Start small. Pick one thing you can do to reduce your stress about money and hold yourself to it.
- Talk to a friend or partner about your worries. Venting is a fabulous way to let go, even if it is only a temporary solution.
- Pick an accountability partner that you report to for purchases over a set limit, say $100. Anytime you want to make a purchase over that limit, consult them. As adults, we shouldn't need help saying no, but in reality most of us do (me included).
- Exercise. Breaking a sweat is a great way to forget your troubles and feel good about yourself.
- If your problem is serious, get professional help.
A two-page brief by a professor at the University of Florida defines financial stress and suggests a few ways to reduce it. It's actually pretty helpful!

We use a 24 hour rule. I started it for the kids, but use it myself. If I really need something but it isnt a true need, then you have to wait 24 hours. Typically within 24 hours, you've either forgotten about it or found ways to improvise and realized that maybe you don't really need it. And, worst case, if it really is a justified need, then it is probably still there.
Great ideas for stress-relievers... and we could also mention that things aren't THAT bad if we all still have jobs. Paying our bills... that's what's important, right? And using The Bargain Hunter's tips on how to save money here and there... is the responsible thing to do!
Thanks a great rule. I'm going to try and implement it in my house! ~Julia
