Texting just became very expensive

Texting_N_Driving.jpgTexting while driving in California can net a $20 fine for the first offense and $50 for the second offense. But with court costs the first ticket will cost you close to $80 and the second ticket about $150, according to an NPR radio report I heard.

For more on the new rules about texting while driving read this Q&A from the LA Times.

The fine for texting while driving should be a lot more than $20. You can't imagine how many drivers I see texting on my 101 route every day. Unless this law is enforced (and the fine raised substantially), it won't deter anyone and people will die because of the reckless behavior of inconsiderate bad drivers. The no-hands cellphone ban appears to be a bust too. I've NEVER seen anyone pulled over for driving while using their cell phone yet it happens all the time. These laws are jokes. How many have to die before lawmakers make the punishment fit the crime?

Let's stop beating around the bush, and tell it like it is. People who talk on the phone and/or text while driving are just plain stupid! In addition, they're a real menace on the road. Unless there is an emergency situation requiring immediate reporting, no one should be talking on the phone while behind the wheel. Pull over to the curb, or wait 'til you get home to have those conversations. That goes for the idiots in the markets who do all their socializing on their cells, and in the meantime make shopping an unpleasant experience for those who can't escape the annoying drivel. Driving requires 100% attention to what's going on around you for 360 degrees. I agree with Angie that penalties for cellphone offenses need to be much costlier before they become a deterrent.

Angie,
I agree that texting while driving is very dangerous. I can't believe how many people still talk on their cell phones without hands free devices! ~Julia

This no texting law has to be the worst waste of our legislators time. Why did they bother when our local law enforcement and CHP refuse to enforce it.The insurance companies need to get envolved, they need to raise the rates of drivers caught violating these laws. That is the only way these idiot drivers will get the message.
