A community book sale in Granada Hills this Sunday, Jan. 18, offers some 1,400 used books. Paperbacks are $.50, hardcovers are $1 and a limited number of coffee table/art books are up to $5. The sale is from 12-3 pm.
St. Andrew and St. Charles Episcopal Church is holding the sale. The books are collected and donated by parishioners and proceeds benefit the church.
Books are roughly sorted by type, including fiction, non-fiction, biography, autobiography, history, children's, mystery, classics, poetry, self-help, cooking, and more. There will be free coffee and cookies, a church volunteer tells me.
Visit the church at 16651 Rinaldi St. in Granada Hills between Havenhurst and Balboa.
I'm told you can get a free photobook at Hoorray when you enter code bzzalbum at checkout. I have not tried this myself, however, so please let me know if the code does or does not work for you.

Reader Gillian writes in with a tip for finding coupons for smog checks in California. Go to SmogTips.com and search by zip code or city for a list of local smog stations. A link to each station shows the address, phone number, a map, and what coupons are available.
Smog Tips also has information about getting $1,000 for a car that does not pass a smog test.
My only contention with the site is that it is unclear how they decide which shops to list. The site says "SmogTips Certified stations are continuously screened for quality work, excellent service and the highest level of integrity. You'll be pleased to know our stations have passed a stringent background investigation and must conform to guidelines set by the State of California before they are eligible of receiving the SmogTips™ Seal of Approval."
So do stations pay to get listed or not? I'm going to put a call in to ask. On the other hand, if you can use the site to find a coupon and get a low price for your next smog check, I'm all for it. Thanks, Gillian!
If you can get a car loan it is a great time to buy because struggling dealerships are slashing prices, according to a story in today's LA Daily News. Loan approvals have dropped from about 80 percent to about 50 percent.
"If you have (credit score of) 700 and above, you don't have a problem getting a loan," the story says..."But anyone with a credit score of 650 or lower may be having trouble getting approval.
"In cash terms, a credit score of 720 to 850 could get you a car loan at about 6.7 percent, which means you'd pay about $768 a month on a three-year $25,000 loan, according to Myfico.com, a Web site operated by Minneapolis-based Fair Isaac Inc. The median credit score in the U.S. is just barely in that top financing bracket at 723.
"By comparison, a score of 620-659 qualifies you for a loan at 12 percent, which increases your payments on the same loan by $63 to $831."

A&M Book Cellars is having their semi-annual half-price book sale Sunday, Jan. 11 through Saturday, Jan. 17. All the books in the store - except the $.25 bargain room - are half price, including audio books. Sale pricing makes brand new paperbacks that sell for $5 just $2.50.
The only wrinkle is that during the sale customers using their store credit (A&M accepts trade-ins) pay the regular price, not the sale price, says owner Alice.
"The amount of credit we give is based on the idea that we are going to sell the book at full price," Alice said. Seems fair enough. Customers can, however, bring in books during sale to trade-in and use the credit after the sale.
A&M gives credit on a sliding scale based on how well they think the books will sell. Typical rates are $.05 for a book that will sell in the bargain room and up to 30 percent of the cover price for hot sellers.
Hours during the sale are Sunday 1-6 pm and Monday through Saturday 10-7. Sunday, Jan. 18 the store is closed so the staff can recover.
Visit them at 19801 Vanowen Street, Unit F. The store is at the back of a small strip mall just west of Marshalls and Vallarta. They accept cash, checks, credit cards and debit cards. Call (818) 716-6259 with questions.
Thanks to reader Lori who sent me this tip! Thanks to Alice and Marty for details!
A colleague brought in three dozen of the tastiest looking donuts I have ever seen and placed them directly across from my desk. Someone is trying very hard to break my resolution to eat healthy.
Good thing the Daily News had tips yesterday on belonging to the 20 percent of people who actually keep their resolutions. The story covers six promises, including exercising more, losing weight, stopping smoking, reducing stress, seeing your doctor and eating right.
Galpin Ford is selling a number of Mustang GT coupe's for $18,995 - which is about $9,156 less than the MSRP of $28,160. Here is the car on Kelly Blue Book.
Galpin got 40 of the cars from a distressed seller, says a PR rep who declined to disclose further details. Were these bought from a dealer going out of business? She could not say.
Galpin has 9 of the cars left. To find out more about these cars call 888-832-7811 and ask for Terry Miller. Or visit Galpin Ford at 15505 Roscoe Blvd. in North Hills right off the 405 Roscoe exit.
With all the rain and winter weather you may be getting, a lot of pests are probably trying to make your shelter their shelter. Not good.
My colleague recently shared an ant tip that she got directly from the pest control guy she called the last time ants invaded her freezer, of all places. Poor buggers froze stiff before they could make off with a crumb.
Anyway, the pest control guy must be a real cheapskate because he told her that the next time the ants made a foray into her icebox she should use Windex with ammonia to scare them away. Try it - it's a lot cheaper than calling pest control.
Thanks, Audrey!

Want to know the cheapest way to ship a business package or holiday gift? ShipGooder.com figures it out for you. Plug in the starting zip code, the destination zip code, and the weight of your package.
The site spits out a chart of how much it will cost to send the item so it gets there the next day, in two days, three days or ground (1-6 days). Results are sorted within each time frame from cheapest to most expensive.
The site compares rates from UPS, FedDEx, DHL, the US Postal Service, and local couriers. You can also check rates for mailing items in Canada.
If, for instance, I need to mail presents to my family in the Bay Area, Ship Gooder tells me it is cheaper to use FedEx ground than USPS. Cool!
Keep this Web site handy, it will be helpful in the next few weeks. Thanks, Tightwad Tod!
If you don't already recycle - and you know who you are - here is one good reason you should start today. Recycling helps the economy.
For every 10,000 tons of waste we generate, 36 jobs are created to recycle the mess, according to RecycleBank, a company that pays residents in 13 states for their recyclables. (I blogged about them once before.) The same amount of trash creates just one job if it is burned and 6 jobs if it is tossed into a landfill.
RecycleBank provides these nifty facts:
+ A lot of what you throw away could be recycled, about 75% actually.
+ According to a 2007 Harris Poll, about 25% of Americans do not recycle at all at home. 62-and-over adults are leading the pack.
+ Our current recycling rate saves 5 billion gallons of gasoline, which reduced our dependence on foreign oil by 114 million barrels. How much less gasoline we would need if we recycled more?
+ Buying used goods and items made from recycled products is another way to...

Keep your eyes peeled for a few upcoming store closings in the Office Depot chain, suggests a recent story from the Miami Herald.
Sales at Office Depot stores that have been open at least one year are down 14 percent in North America and the company's stock has dropped almost 90% in the past year, the story says.
"Office Depot also told Wall Street that it intends to conduct a business review during the fourth quarter, which will include looking at everything from closing stores to getting out of unprofitable business units or countries," the story says.
The chain has a lot of stores in California and Florida, two of the states hit hardest by the housing downtown. There's no saying which Office Depot stores will close, if any, but be on the look out for slowing inventory and super sales.

Here's a great tip from Laura Rowley, a personal finance expert who I interviewed last week. She says many clothes with "dry clean only" tags can actually be washed on the delicate cycle or by hand.
"Don't get scared by 'dry clean only' -- wool, cashmere, silk, rayon, polyester and spandex can all be laundered," says Lindsey Wieber, co-founder of The Laundress, a collection of specialty fabric care products. "Manufacturers will always put the label on because it protects them if for some reason you wash and shrink it."
Laura recommends you "lay wool and cashmere flat to dry; everything else, including cotton and linen, can be thrown in the dryer on a low-heat setting, then pressed. (Time starved? Send the garments out to be pressed -- it's still cheaper than dry-cleaning.)
"As for suits, hang them immediately and air out after wearing; dry clean just two to four times a season. It's actually better to spot clean stains with a lint-free cloth. "Dry cleaning can set in stains further, and does not remove odor from a suit," Wieber says. (For even greater savings, skip the dryer and use a laundry line; it saves an average of $100 a year, according to laundrylist.org.)"
Get $100 from Rent.com when you use their site to find a new apartment. Just look through their listings, tell the landlord you found the listing on Rent.com and then tell Rent.com you have a new apartment.
To search their listings you have to give them your e-mail address so they can send you e-mails about apartments that fit your criteria. Nothing is totally free, after all. But you can always unsubscribe later.
They seem to have many listings in big apartment buildings with amenities so if you are looking for a humble abode it may not work for you.
Rent.com has listings in most major rental markets but not all.
Starting this weekend through Sunday, October 26, you can get a Sam's Club membership for the rest of the year for $10. Business owners and families who do not already belong to the warehouse retailer can sign up at any Sam's Club.
This sounds like a great deal, but a year long membership costs $40, or about $.77 a week. With ten weeks left in the year, that would be $7.7 dollars. So the $10 membership is actually slightly more expensive than the yearly rate.
However, if you can stock up on a lot of goods, buy discount Christmas presents, and get a few tanks of cheaper gas, it may be worth it in the long run.
Renewal rates for 2009 are $35 for business members and $40 for regular members. consumers). Find a Sam's Club near you. Thanks, Frugal Dad!
Senior citizens are eligible for a lot of discounts that the rest of us can only look forward to. Here are two good ones.
Folks 55 and older can get 10 to 20% off at Goodwill locations across the country. Check ahead of time at your local store because the discount may only be valid certain days of the week. You can also call (800) 741-0186 for store information.
Greyhound bus lines give 5% off unrestricted fares to folks 62 and older. Some destinations offer 10% if you purchase your ticket online. Their toll free number is 800-229-9424.
For more age-based discounts visit Senior Discounts. The site has three levels of membership, free and two paid memberships that offer greater access to deals. I'm counting the days!
This Saturday, October 11, 2008 Borders is having a huge sale on games, holiday cards, books, DVDs, and more.

A selection of 90 DVDs are all reduced to $6. Burt's Bee's products are also buy one get one free. Buy a bag of coffee beans and get a medium beverage free.
Hmmm...may not be a bad idea to make one or two purchases as gifts for the holidays, which will be here before you know it.

You can now get details on a home sale just one day after closing on Realtor.com, according to a story on MarketWatch.com. Within 24 hours of a sale's closing, anybody with a computer can look at the sale price, property details, photos, and who the buyer's agent was.
The story says you can now do this for SoCal sales, implying they already provide this data for other markets. Check the site to see how much data they have for your neighborhood.
Consider the new search tool a way to conduct your own appraisal of your home, a neighbor's home, or homes in a neighborhood you are interested in moving to.
To find the recent sales data, go to Realtor.com, click on "Find Home Values," click on the state or region you are interested in, then zoom in really far until you see tiny red and green pinpoints. Each pinpoint has the data on one home. I had to zoom in about 5 times until they popped up.
The site also lets you sort the results for that neighborhood by sale price, sale date, number of bedrooms, bathrooms or square feet. You can also filter out certain homes for a more detailed search of their records.
The discount tool store Harbor Freight is having a parking lot sale at many of its locations starting today through Sunday, October 5, 2008. Some sale prices may be good through Wednesday, October 8 so read the fine print.
With coupons you can print on this page, sale prices include scissors for $.97, a four-piece paint brush set for $.89, and an electronic bug swatter than I'm totally coveting for $2.49. Zzzzt. Zzzzzt.
Lots of other tools on sale. Find a Harbor Freight near you. The company has stores in many states.
You can read the survey's about how bad the economy is or just look at how many retailers and restaurants are sending out coupons. Discounts that were few and far between are becoming weekly. Here are a few good ones:
Discounts at Marie Callender's, from 20% off your total bill to a free entree when you buy one entree and two drinks.
Get $5 off a $20 purchase at Walgreens Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4, 2008 only. Some exclusions.
REI"s fall sale begins today, October 3, 2008. Runs through October 13, 2008.
But don't let the sale signs and coupons faze you. Focus on the actual price you are going to pay and ask yourself if it is really a good price. Could you get this item somewhere else for less without sacrificing quallity? Could you forgo the purchase?
If you enjoy getting your hands dirty, I suggest joining the Home Depot Garden Club. It's free and may save you money if you can tolerate getting an e-mail about once a week from them. (I only open them if the subject mentions a coupon or deal.)
The e-mail they sent last week had a buy one get one free coupon for bulbs. (If the link doesn't work it's because you need to join to access the coupons.) I bought two packs of tulips, priced at $7 each, so in the end I got 28 bulbs for $7 plus tax. I also bought a pack of four compact florescent light bulbs for less than $6.
Consider joining, it may payoff for you!
BookMooch.com is a Web site that facilitates the (nearly) free trading of books between readers, similar to PaperBackSwap.com, which I blogged about recently.
You type in the books you want to give away, then you put in requests for the books you want. Meanwhile, you receive requests from other members. Joining is free. You only pay the mailing cost to send books out.
For every book you list you receive a tenth-of-a-point. Each time you give away one book you get a whole point, or three points if you mail it abroad. Receiving a books costs 1 point, or 2 points if it was sent from abroad.
To keep receiving books, you need to give away at least one book for every three you receive. Read more about how the points system works.
Browse books by topic, language or location on this page. My Dad uses the site and has been happy with it. Thanks, Dad!
The latest issue of Real Simple makes a big promise - re-do the look of your home for free. Free! I hope this isn't some empty promise like those made by politicians. Here are some of their best tips so you can decide for yourself.
+ Use a quilt to make a colorful headboard. Just drape it over the plain headboard.
+ Conceal power cords and wires by propping up art work along the wall. Layer two or three frames to really make them standout.
+ Tie ribbons to dresser handles to give the dresser a fancy.
+ Cover shoe boxes and other cardboard containers with wrapping paper, transforming them into pretty storage boxes.
+ Stash toiletries in mis-matched dishes, bowls, and cups from your cupboard that you never use but can't get rid of. Place on a tray for a neat look.
+ Turn extra vases into an herb garden. Place a layer of small rocks or pebbles at the bottom of the vase for drainage, then plant a small herb in dirt. Watch the roots grow or wrap the vase in paper and tie with twine for a neat look. Label each plant.
These tips fall short of a true makeover, but they are simple, cheap ways you can create a new look at home.

Not sure how to recycle something but want to save the earth? Here are tips from the October issue of Real Simple magazine to help you do just that. This post covers the latter part of the alphabet. To read the first part of this story click here.
Items that you can't recycle are listed at the bottom.
Paint - check www.earth911.org to find a paint recycling center near you.
Pizza boxes - If you rip out the spots where grease has soaked into the box you can recycle the rest. The grease can ruin the recycled paper if it begins to decompose.
Printer ink cartridges - the story compares them to gas tanks. They don't break, they just run out of ink. Unfortunately, when you throw them out they take 450 years to decompose. Find an office store that offers a discount for refills of used cartridges.
Recreational equipment - Stuff that can be used can go to Goodwill or Salvation Army. You can also donate it to Sports Gift, which gives gently used sports gear to needy kids.
Sneakers - drop them off at...
Fall officially started Monday and already I'm seeing ads for flu shot clinics. Here's a roundup of who offers what and at what price. Note, most places do not offer the shot everyday so check ahead exactly when you can get one.
Costco charges $20 for the flu shot and also offers a $35 pneumonia shot. If you have the Medicare Part B card and no HMO insurance, Costco will bill Medicare for you and you will not have a co-pay. You do not have to have a Costco card to use the pharmacy, AND THIS IS ALSO TRUE FOR FLU SHOTS. Heard it straight from the horse's mouth.
Get a $30 shot at Safeway/Vons/Pavillions and get a 10% off coupon for a grocery purchase within 7 days. Find one offering flu shots near you. For the hours the clinic is open at the store near you, click on the link flu shot underneath each store location. They accept Medicare Part B.
Longs Drug's has the flu shot for $30 or $45 for the pneumonia vaccine. Info and locations on this page.
CVS charges $30. Find a clinic...
This deal has a lot of caveats and rules, but it could save you as much as 50%. Here's what you have to do.
Log in to Walgreens' photo site. Submit an online photo mail order for $20 or more, not including shipping and taxes. Submit the order by September 30, 2008 at 11:59 p.m. CT and pay for the order using PayPal. You must have a confirmed U.S. PayPal account in good standing to be eligible.
Look for a $10 credit to your PayPal account three to four weeks after the promotion ends on September 30. It's a long time to wait but free money is hard to come by.
Caveats: Offer excludes custom framing service and W Photo Gift Cards. Maximum credit is $10. May end sooner than September 30, 2008. A few PayPal transactions are excluded. Read the details here.
The last time I wrote about hybrids it was to skewer the Toyota Prius, which, by my calculations, took 11 years to pay off if you drove $12,000 miles a year and paid $5 a gallon for gasoline on average.
But a story in the October issue of Consumer Reports says the Prius and a handful of other hybrids actually pay off in one year. I'm scandalized! And happy.
"Six of the 12 hybrids we looked at can save you from about $500 to $4,250, even without tax credits, and pay back their price premium after only one year," the story says.
CR calculated the five year cost of owning these vehicles (price plus five-year fuel cost) and compared them to similar non-hybrids.
The six vehicles that payoff in one year include the Prius, hybrid versions of the Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Tahoe, the Ford Escape, Toyota Camry and Saturn Vue, above. With federal tax credits the Honda Civic, Nissan Altima and Saturn Aura hybrids also break even after one year.
The Web site doesn't have the nifty chart that the magazine does, so if you want full details you'll have to pick up a copy. The accompanying story, however, seems to be free online. Read the full story here. (Normally, accessing articles on Consumer Reports requires a paid membership.)
It's not a great time to sell your home but if you are putting property on the market, cut your losses by negotiating a lower fee with your real estate agent. Some 71% of people who asked for a lower fee were successful, according to a Consumer Reports survey of 11,121 people.
Agents typically take 5% to 6% of the sale price, which is huge! Talk agents down using tips from this MSN Real Estate story. Start by interviewing several agents. "Tell them how much you are expecting to make from the sale of the house and ask if they will lower their commission to the percentage you want," the story says.
"No one gets upset with you for asking," says Kasy Gott, a certified financial planner with Kochis Fitz, a San Francisco financial planning firm.
"If you're turned down, simply thank the agent for their report and let them know you'll be putting your home on the market with someone else in the next couple weeks. It might be enough to sway them."
Another option is to go with a realty company that charges reduced fees, like RedFin.com or ZipRealty.com. Note, RedFin operates in eight metro areas across the county, including Los Angeles.
Or use flat-fee sites like Help-U-Sell Real Estate or ForSaleByOwner.com.
A reader e-mailed me a looooong time ago asking for recommendations for a place where she could sell her gold jewelry for a good price. I finally came across a good answer in the November issue of Shop Smart magazine.
First take the jewelry you are thinking of selling to a reputable appraiser. Get the karat of your pieces and ask for the weight in pennyweights or troy ounces.
Then use a calculator at the Dendritics Gemscales Museum to determine the value based on current gold prices. Prices fluctuate often so check them right before you go in to sell. Try to get 85 percent of that value when you go in to sell.
Expect to visit more than one jeweler to negotiate a good price. A good trick is to mention what one jeweler offered and ask another jeweler to beat that price.
The DWP plans to leave two money saving compact fluorescent light bulbs on the doorstep of every Angeleno over six months to persuade residents to use the pricey bulbs, according to a story in today's Daily News.
"Although utilities and environmentalists have touted the benefits of CFLs - which use 66 percent less power than incandescent bulbs and last 10 times longer - residents have been slow to change," the story says.
It will cost the city $5 million to purchase and distribute the bulbs, but they estimate the DWP will save $84 million over five years, which is about how long CFLs last. If residents plug in the bulbs they will use less energy, which means the DWP does not have to buy as much electricity.
Now what's the chance the city will pass these savings onto tax payers?
Walk into Melange Apothecary in Sherman Oaks and you are suddenly surrounded by beautifully wrapped packages of fragrances stacked as neat as can be.
There are lotions, candles, bath soaps, and, along the back wall, a perfume laboratory that recalls Chemistry 101 at its most feminine. The small shop has dark wood floors and is painted a few shades greener than Tiffany blue. White shelves let the merchandise speak for itself.
Many of Melange's products are made by artisans and/or imported from Europe, so prices are higher than, say, Bath and Body Works, but basic hygiene is not why shoppers come to Melange.
"I'm all about little luxuries," the owner, Denise Estrada, said when I stopped by recently.
Her fragrant delicacies become a bit more affordable during a sale that starts Saturday, September 6 at 10 am. Go tomorrow and expect mimosas and bagels alongside discounts of 40 to 60% off.

Paper, plastic, glass. Recycling those are easy. But some of the other stuff - carpeting, batteries, gadgets - gets tricky. Lucky for us the September issue of Real Simple has tips on how to recycle almost anything. The best tips are below.
Backpacks - donate to the American Birding Association, which gives the backpacks to scientists in the field.
Batteries - RadioShack and Office Depot accept rechargeable ones. Places that sell car batteries will usually dispose of your old one.
Carpeting (nylon fiber) - Visit CarpetRecovery.org to find a reclamation site near you. The manufacturer you bought it from may also have a recycling program.
Crayons - The National Crayon Recycle Program will take care of them. Just remember to leave the wrappers on. It's hard to tell which color is which without them.
Crocs - The manufacturer recycles the shoes into new ones and donates them poor families. Mail them to Crocs Recycling West, 3375 Enterprise Ave, Bloomington CA 92316.
Formal wear - Here are two options, aside from Goodwill and Salvation Army, where you can drop off that fancy dress you'll never wear again. OperationFairyDust.org and CatherinesCloset.org.
Hangars (wire) - remove the paper or cardboard and you can...
A post last week about the used book store A&M Book Cellars spurred a lot of discussion, including a tip from one reader about a Web site that facilitates the swapping of paperbacks. It's called PaperBackSwap.com.
"You list the books you want to swap," a reader named Tara e-mailed me. "In return for sending off books, (and for posting your first 10 books), you get credits to request books to be sent to you. All you pay is postage (avg $2.20/book) when sending a book, nothing to receive a book. The mailing info prints from your computer and you can wrap the book for shipping with two pieces of paper."
Got more questions? Check out this quick tutorial on how the site works. When searching for a book you can specify if you want a paperback, hardback, audio cassette, audio CD, or large print.
Registration requires you to share an email, set up a password, share your address and phone number. You must be 18 to join. Membership is free, though it may go up at some point to $10 or $20 a year.
After joining you have to list 10 books to get started and request books from other members. Thanks, Tara!
RealMemories.com is a site where you can upload digital photos to be framed. The main perk of the site is getting to see how the picture looks with the frame and mat of your choice before buying it. There are dozens of frames (starting at $19) and photo sizes you can choose from. Mats ($4.50 per photo) come in only three colors, white, cream and sand. You can add a caption for $4.50.
The site lets you alter your photo. You can see any picture in color, sepia toned, or black and white. You can crop the photo, change the contrast and reduce/increase the brightness. You can also save as many as 50 photos on the site and send framed pics to multiple addresses.
On the FAQs page under quality it says their frames are made of wood. Hardwood? Plywood? Particle board? Details are lacking.
I uploaded an old shot from my honeymoon, chose a basic frame, 5" x 7" print size, and basic mat and the total came to $42. Hmmm...me thinks I could do this a lot cheaper at Aaron Brothers, especially if I had a coupon. But for some, framing a photo online may be easier than visiting a store.
I got the sweetest email from a reader last night. Gillian writes: "Hi Julia, I adore your column as I'm always in search of bargains. I wanted to pass on a little miracle which was given to me and could possibly benefit a lot of people.
"Last week the right front hub cap of my 2000 Toyota Corolla was either stolen or fell off due to questionable driving on my part. A friend of mine told me not to go to the dealership and directed me to Mike at Culver City Hub Caps and Wheels, 4228 South Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City 90230. Phone (310)559-1200. I went and discovered a treasure trove!
"He has hub caps galore, new and used in pristine condition hanging all over the store. He immediately found one for my car, put in on, cleaned my others and I was out the door in ten minutes. He charged me a grand total of $25.00 instead of the $120 I would have been charged by Miller Toyota (I checked). Please pass the info on as he's such a lovely man and I would like to return the favor.
"Many thanks,
Gillian"
I did a quick check online for Toyota Corolla hubcaps and Mike does seem to have good prices. For folks outside of LA, you can find similar hubcap prices on Hubcaps.org.
I found slightly higher prices on Hubcap Haven.com and HubcapZone.com
Prices were slightly cheaper on HubcapMike.com. Wonder if it's the same Mike? Wouldn't that be funny!

A reader recommended I check out A&M Book Cellars in Canoga Park for jaw-dropping prices on paperbacks. I would be bowed over by the store, he promised.
I was - and I wasn't. A&M is one of those stores where homemade signs point customers to the door that still works. The merchandise is not perfectly organized and the floors are a little dusty.
But the prices are remarkable. A hardback of "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen (a fabulous book once it gets started) in gift-worthy condition was $5. Paperbacks copies of Tom Clancy, Mary Higgins Clark, Catherine Coulter and Patricia Cornwell books were half their cover price ($3+) and in good, but not perfect, condition.
The store had sections for romance, legal thriller, science fiction, western, and young readers. The top shelf in many of those sections are $1. Books not marked are half their cover price.
In the bargain room books are a quarter each, five for a dollar, or 15 for $2. The titles are not entirely obscure, as I suspected they would be, but their condition suffers more than the rest of the store. In the bargain room I saw "The Firm" by John Grisham, a hard back copy of Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien.
A&M has been around for 24 years and one employee claims it is the last independent paperback bookstore in the Valley. Even if that's not true, the store is...

I got a small yellow flyer from Countrywide Thursday that intrigued me. The flyer said: "Fixed or adjustable rate home loans with NO points, NO origination fee, NO appraisal fee, NO processing fee, NO lender fees at all!"
Caps are theirs, not mine. Looks like the mortgage brokers still employed by Countrywide - apparently there are some left - are having a very hard time getting business. So hard they are offering what sounds like a real deal.
This doesn't mean it is any easier to get a loan. But if you do have good credit and are shopping around for a loan, you can ask for very favorable terms from Countrywide, as the flyer I received indicates. I'm guessing it's a similar story with other mortgage brokers, who went from having tons of business to very little when the housing marketing started to deflate.
Even if you have already purchased a home, buying a foreclosed property brings up a lot of strange terms you may not be familiar with.
ForeclosureFish.com, a site that offers help to home owners in danger of losing their home, provides many definitions. Here are some important ones.
balloon mortgage - A mortgage loan that requires the remaining principal balance be paid at a specific point in time. For example, a loan may be amortized as if it would be paid over a thirty year period, but requires that at the end of the tenth year the entire remaining balance must be paid. At that time, the owner will generally sell the property or refinance into a new mortgage.
deed-in-lieu - Short for "deed in lieu of foreclosure," this conveys title to the lender when the borrower is in default and wants to avoid foreclosure. The lender may or may not cease foreclosure activities if a borrower asks to provide a deed-in-lieu. Regardless of whether the lender accepts the deed-in-lieu, the avoidance and non-repayment of debt will most likely show on a credit history. What a deed-in-lieu may prevent is having the documents preparatory to a foreclosure being recorded and become a matter of public record.
default - Failure to make the mortgage payment within a specified period of time. For first mortgages or first trust deeds, if a payment has still not been made within 30 days of the due date, the loan is considered to be in default.
delinquency - Failure to make...
On the surface a foreclosed home may look like a bargain, but the reality is the process isn't pretty, according to a recent story in the SF Chronicle. Here's the low down:
Be prepared for fixer-uppers. "That's because banks don't do more than a very basic clean-out of foreclosed properties," the story says. "They don't paint. They don't replace carpets. They don't remodel." These homes will not have curb appeal and will be sold as it.
Expect to go up against multiple offers. You're not the only one who wants a deal.
You must be qualified to get a loan, which is much much harder to do now than two years ago. Get pre-approved to show you mean business.
When shopping for a loan, consider buying one from the bank that owns the foreclosed property you are interested in. "If two offers come in, and one is $3,000 less but they will take out the mortgage with them (the bank-owner), that's more valuable to them," the story says.
Short sales and auctions are a different animal so know the difference.
Search Bay Area foreclosure listings, courtesy of SFGate, the Chronicle's online site. The Daily News also has a foreclosure database that lets you search by address, zip code or city.
Thanks, Sarah!
So you'd like to get a fab deal on a foreclosed home, despite warnings that the process entails a ton of paperwork and an extremely low success rate. After all, who doesn't want a bargain basement home?
Begin by tracking down foreclosed listings. There are a few ways to do this:
+ Search online. Seems simple but many of the sites, like ForeclosureFreeSearch.com and Foreclosure.com, charge $10/week after a free trial membership. Both sites take your credit card number as part of the registration process but you can cancel before the end of the seven day period to avoid charges. RealtyTrac also has a seven-day free membership but I was able to search for local foreclosures without sharing any information.
+ Call lenders. Each has a list of real estate owned (REO) properties. Could take awhile to get through to the right person, however.
+ Go straight to the source. A huge number of foreclosed homes are owned by...
Home foreclosures rose 230 percent across the San Fernando Valley, 260 percent across LA County and 14 percent nationwide, according to a Daily News story and an ABC news story.
As bad as you and I may feel for those who lose their homes, let's be practical. For folks who don't own a home, foreclosures may be the only way to get into the market because they can be priced up to 30% off. So how does one buy a foreclosed home?
A story on eHow.com explains the process in 12 steps.
The story offers great, basic advice - from where to find foreclosed homes to negotiating with banks - but ends with this caveat: "Beware that buying foreclosed property has a very low probability of success for all of the above conditions and because many people try to do it."
I finally got around to cracking open the Sunday paper - it's been a busy week, yada, yada, yada - and found the USA Weekend insert had a story on stretching your dollars.
A lot of the Web sites and tips they featured are already familiar to you, my savvy spending friends, but here is one that I had not heard of before.
GardenBargainsOnline is a site run by a woman who loves gardening. She finds weekly deals, coupon codes and highlights sales at garden retailers. One tip currently on her site is for a 20% off sale at BloomingBulbs.com until July 31. The fall flowers on sale are listed here.

"...any person who receives a card that is invalid or less than the amount indicated will be reimbursed by Plastic Jungle. The new policy takes effect immediately and applies to all gift cards posted on www.plasticjungle.com," the site says.
You can search for a card by merchant, discount, amount or store type. The site did not have any cards for Anthropologie, one of my favorite stores, but had five for Macy's. For each card for sale, the site lists its value, sale price, and percentage discount.
A note to sellers, most of the gift cards are sold for less than their value and you lose 10% of the sale price to Plastic Jungle. You may want to try Craigslist first.
Get 99-cent shipping on clearance items at Macys now until Sunday, July 20. Eligible items are marked as such after you click on them. Use promo code 99CENTS when checking out.

Kenmore elite appliances are 20% off at Sears through Saturday, July 12, 2008. I've seen many appliance sales of 10% but 20% is unusual so if you have the money to pony up, now is a good time to do it.

A newish blog at the Daily News called Green Spirited has a quick tip for how to cut your water bill. Install an aerator on the end of your kitchen faucet.
An aerator "mixes air with the water flow cutting the sheer volume of water used nearly in half without affecting your pressure. And you save oodles of energy used to heat the hot water, cuz you're using less water."
"When shopping for an aerator, look for one that has a flow rate of 2.2 gallons per minute (or less), which can save up to three gallons a day. It's easier than skipping showers, Tommy Lee."
Screwing on an aerator sounds easy. Hardware stores like Home Depot sell them. Ace Hardware has a simple one for $7.50.
Linens -n- Things is having a semi-annual clearance sale with items marked down 25 to 75 percent. A set of 12 champagne flutes, above, is $15 (sale $20, orig $30) if you have a $5 off coupon available in many Sunday newspapers. Online get 20% off with coupon code 26620000008. A new Web site called RepairPal estimates the cost of car repairs. It takes into account the vehicle's make, model and your location. The site claims to provide "impartial, fair price estimates, the most comprehensive auto shop directory, and expert insights and advice from certified mechanics."
I got an estimate for replacing a front headlight on my MINI, which indeed is broken, and RepairPal said it would cost between $63 and $78. When I called the dealer, however, they said it would be $90. Hmmm...
RepairPal says they spent "more than a year researching, collecting, converting, cleaning, analyzing, and structuring many sources of data" to come up with accurate estimates. Read more about their methodology here.
Maybe they need to keep tinkering with their formula. Or maybe the dealer is ripping me off. Either way, I'm hoping Hubby will be able to fix it. He's very handy!
RepairPal also suggests repair shops. Thanks, Ryan!
Many retailers are announcing sales as part of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend. Yay, we get Friday off!

I wrote about this deal once before but because many folks head to the nursery to buy plants this time of year I thought I would share this reminder. Lowe's has a fantastic plant return policy.
"If your trees, shrubs or perennials don't survive a year, we'll replace them free of charge. Just bring in the plant and the receipt," says a recent email I received from Lowe's. (Scroll down and look on the left.)
Their prices are decent and the quality is so so. Look for healthy, bug-free plants or, if you can track down a nursery attendant, ask them which of the plants you are considering are most healthy.
Keep the receipts in one spot - say an envelope on your desk marked "Lowe's plants." Find a Lowe's near you.

The REI used gear sale starts at 10 am June 14 at the Northridge store and 7 am June 21 at the Santa Monica store.
Prices on all kinds of gear - tents, strollers, clothes, shoes, and bags - are typically at least 35% below retail and often they are 50% off. The condition of the items are anywhere from used once to slightly dusty.
The sale is open to members and it costs $20 for a lifetime membership.
At the Santa Monica used gear sale that I went to last year there were already about 40 people in line when I showed up at 6:30 a.m. I'm glad I went because I got an awesome sleeping bag and gym bag. Not sure if the Northridge sale will be as crowded. The Santa Monica sale did not last long - maybe an hour or two - so get there early before the best stuff is gone.
To make your Friday the 13th a bit luckier, Crate & Barrel's summer sale starts on that date. Look for sales on indoor and outdoor furniture, upholstered sofas and chairs, sleepers, ottomans, sectionals and benches.

Sale is online too, but floor samples are only in the store. Find a Crate & Barrel near you.
Cheap is in, but home repair - that quintessential summer activity - is nowhere near a bargain. So how to freshen up your abode on a budget? Follow these basic principles.
Do it yourself. Buy it used. Update, not transform.
Now one more time with enthusiasm and details. First, focus on updating the rooms where you spend a lot of time - your kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.
In the kitchen, a new faucet and sink will provide an instant face-lift. Both can be replaced for about $800, and the task is one that even the power tool-challenged can handle.
"People don't automatically know what you did, but it looks a lot better," said Suzanne Horton, president and CEO of Be Jane, a Burbank company that empowers women to improve their homes. "It has a very visible impact to the eye."

A reader emailed me with a tip on a good place for cheap pet baths. It costs less than a groomer and won't stink up your home!
"I take my dog to the Petco...and give her a bath at their self-service grooming for $10.00. Groomers charge me between $25 and $45 so this is a bargain for me and I don't have to burn gas to drop her off at the groomer's and then pick her up and she won't be in a cage all day waiting for her bath and then waiting for me to pick her up. Petco provides the basin for the bath, a thick no-slip mat on the bottom of the basin, hot and cold water, a hand-held sprayer with a long hose, all the shampoos and conditioners including the ones for dry skin, allergies, fleas, towels or a hair blower, and to top it off......Petco cleans the mess!"
The downside, she points out, is the temptation to buy stuff while she is in the store. Leave your wallet in the trunk (other than cash to pay for the bath) and you won't have that problem. Find a Petco near you and remember to check the option for self-service dog wash. Thanks, Shoshana!

Rut roh! That's me using my best Scooby Doo voice after hearing that big dogs are not welcome at the new Americana at Brand shopping complex in Glendale, according to Racked LA.
Racked writes "Family-friendly Americana at Brand is already not looking so lovingly at Fido if he's not the size of a teacup. Franklin Avenue reports on letters coming into the Glendale News-Press complaining about Americana's no big-dog policy."
What if you live there and have a big, Scooby-sized pooch? Does this mean you can't take him/her for a stroll out your front door? If it comes down to pet people v. Americana mall rats, pet people are going to piss all over the policy. Now, who's got a Scooby snack?

Here is a Web site that helps you find the best bank for your needs. At FindABetterBank.com you enter your zip code, then rank 12 account features as things you either don't care about, would like to have, or must have. Answer a handful of questions about what fees usually snag you, then sort through the results it spits out. It took me about three minutes to go through the process.
You can rank the results by estimated annual fees (the Web site guesses what you pay according to the info you shared), the percentage of preferred features you ranked or proximity. The results also detail each bank's features, fees, and savings account rates. The site was started by two guys, one with a finance background and one a techie. Their premise was that it is too difficult for people to switch banks and that if the process were easier the better banks would rise to the top.
People have such different needs I do not think there is one "best" bank, but certainly this site can help you find one that suits your lifestyle. Read more about how the site works.

This weekend, April 19 and 20, 2008, OSH is paying your sales tax. That means you get a 7.6% discount on everything (if I did my math right).
I like OSH because they have a generous return policy for plants. If it dies you bring it back with your receipt and you can exchange it or get store credit. Their customer service is good, too. I returned a broken spritzer that was probably six months old without the receipt and they gave us full credit. Find an OSH near you. Thanks, Eric!
Keep your eyes peeled for big sales at Linens -n- Things. The home furnishings store, and a major rival of Bed, Bath & Beyond, may file for bankruptcy, according to a New York Times story.
Could this mean an end to the reams of 20% off coupons both stores send in the mail? BBB and LNT accept each others coupons and take ones that have already expired. But if LNT does not survive, BBB won't have to worry about competition and may change its coupon policies. So even if you think you have an endless supply of those 20% off coupons, keep saving them. They may come in handy down the line (unless BBB starts honoring the expiration date). Thanks, SCRS!
Creativity Inc, a Van Nuys company that wheels and deals in arts and crafts products, is having a spring clearance sale Saturday, April 19, 2008. The sale is 7 am to noon. A new kind of prescription drug plan has patients paying for a percentage of their drug's cost instead of a flat co-pay like $10, according to a New York Times story. The drug plan is called Tier 4. Many Medicare plans have it and now an increasing number of private plans are using it. Only a few drugs are in Tier 4 but they are very expensive, pushing patient co-pays to three or four digits.
"The system means that the burden of expensive health care can now affect insured people, too," the story says. "No one knows how many patients are affected, but hundreds of drugs are priced this new way. They are used to treat diseases that may be fairly common, including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hemophilia, hepatitis C and some cancers. There are no cheaper equivalents for these drugs, so patients are forced to pay the price or do without."
It's so hard to believe that the lives of so many are in the hands of bean counters. Even though our government is plagued by inefficiencies, this is a strong argument for universal health care. Read the whole story here, or if you can't log onto the NYT site, click on the first link at the top of this page. If that *still* does not work, email me with a request and I will forward you the story.

Check out the Web site Climate Counts for the skinny on how green major corporations are. Companies get a score from 1 to 100 based on 22 criteria, which you can use to rank the companies you patronize.
So how did local companies do? Yahoo! in Burbank netted 36. LAME-O! Anheuser Busch, which has a brewing plant in Van Nuys, got a 29. PHOOEY! Disney scored 24 points. FLUNK! Also of note, Google gets a miserable 17. EAT MY EGG SALAD! Next to each company's score is a way to e-mail them and let them know you think the climate counts.
The guy behind the site heads Stonyfield Farms, a green dairy company that scored 63. Read more the folks at Climate Counts.

Tax time. If you are lucky, someone else (Hubby) does the number crunching and you (me) keep them well fed and on task. When it comes to estimating the value of donated goods, however, you are on your own. The IRS does not set specific values for donated goods, but lets you deduct "fair market value" for items in "good" condition or better.
As Debt-Proof Living warns, "If you estimate too high you could face an audit—with the requirement to prove and authenticate the values you assigned—and penalties if the IRS does not agree with your numbers. But if you value your donations too low, you stand to lose a lot of money you could have recouped."
Luckily, there are a number of pricing guides. The Salvation Army has a Valuation Guide with high and low numbers for dozens of items. Bicycles are $15 to $65, sweaters are $2.50 to $8, a floor lamp is $7.50 to $40.
Yahoo has a similar guide but it does not list as many items. Goodwill also lists a price range for items they sell in their stores, about as fair as fair market gets. A CPA named Jeffrey Campbell from Ohio lists high, low, and average value for many donated items on his personal site. His Web site says he has been a CPA for 15+ years, but his phone number and e-mail are listed if you want to double check.
Debt-Proof Living also recommends the booklet “MONEY-For Your Used Clothing; 2007 Tax Year” which they will sell to you for $20. The site claims the authors guarantee you will save at least $250 using their guide or they will give you your money back. Hmmm...with so many free guides I don't think it makes sense to buy a booklet unless you are really freaked out about a possible audit or have major items to donate and really want to be accurate.

Looking for linens? One place to check out is the Designer Linens Outlet. They sell linens for the bedroom, bathroom, and window dressings. A white sheet set made out of 1000-thread count cotton is $120 (orig $400). Linen prices can really vary, but I did a quick check at Macy's, which only sells sheets up to 800-thread count. Their Hotel brand 800-thread count sheets are $117 just for the flat sheet and another $117 for the fitted sheet.
The Outlet has a matching comforter, bed skirt and sham set in fall hues is $95 (orig $190) but comes in king size only. Macy's bed sets range from $80 to $230.
At the Outlet a six piece silk blend Shangri La towel set is $60 (orig $120). Macy's does not sell the Shangri La brand of towels but you can browse their selection here for your own price comparison.
Barnes & Noble is marking down all their CDs - new releases, box sets, etc - by 40% now until Sunday, March 30. In stores only. Use this printable coupon to get the discount. You do not need to be a member and the discount applies to as many CDs as you want to buy.
Caveats: not good at college bookstores or online.
Have you heard of Buck-a-Roo$? Besides from having a really silly name, the discount home goods/grocery store in Van Nuys has some really good deals. Not everything is a bargain though, so shop with a discriminating eye.
Here are some deals I found there. Three Oral Fresh Plus toothbrushes for $1 (now I'm wondering why I only bought three!), two pint glasses for $1, Wet 'n Wild nail polish for $1, Herbal Essences 23.7 fl oz for $5, maternity jean shorts with an elastic band for $5, two 24-oz packs of Nestle chocolate chips for $5, and 5lb of long grain white rice for $2.
Some suspect prices I found there. Six packs of Ramen for $1 (a really good sale is at least 10/$1), 16 oz of pasta for $1 (you can get the same amount for $.79 at Trader Joe's) and camping chairs for $15 (they go on sale for $10 or less).
About 2/3 of the store is home goods and the rest is grocery. No fresh food was being sold when I dropped by. Here is a coupon for 15% off any purchase, good through April 15, 2008. Buck-a-Roo$ has such low prices because it buys overstocked items, orders that were canceled and items that have old packaging (not expired, just old). That means the stock is inconsistent - a deal you see one day may not be there the next day. Read more about the company here.
The Van Nuys store is new and clean, the aisles are wide and the place is well lit. Parking in back and in front. Note, they do not accept personal checks. Visit them at 17641 Vanowen St. in Van Nuys. (818) 758-6500. Open 8 to 9 everyday. Other locations in Bellflower and Pico Rivera.
In case you don't get these things all the time in the mail, here is a coupon for 20% off at Linens 'n Things. Good on any single item with some exceptions. Expires December 31, 2008. Both LNT and Bed, Bath & Beyond accept each others coupon and generally accept coupons even after they expire. This one can be used more than once so come back to print another one out when you need it.
Cavests: valid in stores only, cannot be combined with other discounts. A number of labels are excluded, read the fine print for details. Find an LNT near you.
Get 30% off all the faux retro greetings cards from Paper Relics for an unknown amount of time. Buy online and use code CANDY at checkout. I may have to get a set for my sisters, who send me the most beautiful cards. I like this whimsical Let It Snow card, which is $4 for one, $12 for 4, or $20 for 8. That's before the discount.
A card that has a little fairy standing on a tree limb with an egg in her hands brings home the message "you're a good egg." Perfect for a birthday, graduation, or other congratulatory occassions, with similar pricing. A proper lady decorates a fun "eat cake" card, above.
The Machinist blogger has figured out a way to access all the Wall Street Journal stories online for free. Normally subscribing costs $80 a year. The deal is that the WSJ wants to get traffic from search engines like Google and sites like Digg that collect popular stories, so the financial newspaper makes most or all of its stories free if you access them through these sites.
Normally, when you click on a link to a WSJ story from an ordinary Web site you get a truncated version of the story and have to log on and pay to finish reading it. "But if you click on a link to that same article in Google News, you'll be sent to the full story for free. This is true, also, of WSJ links on Digg, and probably a few other big referral sites, too," the blog post says.
If some stories are still off limits you can install a referer spoofer, which is totally legal, the Machinist blog claims. For directions click here and scroll down to where it says "The slightly harder way (but you do get all the Journal's stories):"
The Chef's Corner has marked its collection of Villeroy & Boch dishes, platters, and serving ware down by 50% in honor of the basketball fever that has consumed many otherwise sane people. A 16-piece Twist Alea Limone set with a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl and mug, above, is $129 (retails $260). A French Garden Fleurence 12.5-inch serving platter is $75 (retails $150). Browse all the V&B on sale. Note, if you want quicker delivery make sure the item is in stock. Otherwise it takes about three to four weeks. Sale ends March 29, 2008.
The kit is $4 (orig $18) at Graveyard Mall and shipping is $7. Not a bad deal overall. It includes 400 letters in two fonts, four stampers to hold your message, tweezers to arrange the letters, an ink pad and a tray to hold it all. Don't wait long if you are interested because prices fluctuate on this site.
Click here to see their other deals of the day, including a scale/body fat monitor for $23, a wooden multi-game set for $5 and a mushroom that plays soft music and displays lights to soothe sleepy tots, for $10.
Here are four merlots that were rated as "great bargains" by Shop Smart magazine. They range from $5 to just under $11. I added links to purchase each bottle.
Columbia Crest Grand Estates 2004, Columbia Valley, Washington, $10.79 on wine.com
Yellow Tail 2006, Australia, $7 at Wine County North Plainfield (I've had this and it works in a pinch.)
Bogle Vineyards 2005, California $7 at klwines.com (I had this and it was tasty.)
Walnut Crest 2005, Rapel Valley, Chile $5 at greatcorks.com
My favorite bottle of cheap, I mean affordable wine, is Ravenswood Vinter's Blend 2005 Zinfandel for $9 at Malloy's Finest. Albertsons stocks it.
The article also gives the thumbs up to two boxed wines, which are the size of four bottles.
Delicato Bota Box merlot 2005 is $20 at Wine Merchant Raleigh and Black Box 2004 is $22 at Bevmo.
Members get 25% off one regular priced item at Borders now through Sunday, March 16. Joining is free and takes about 3 minutes in stores. I push the Border's membership because it is free and when you use their big coupons the book price often rival Amazon, but you get instant gratification. Print out this coupon to get the deal.
Caveats: gotta be a member. Cannot be combined with any other offer, including but not limited to “3 for 2," "Buy 3, Get 4th Free," "Buy 4, Get 5th Free," or “Buy 1, Get 1 Half Price” offers. Excludes previous and online purchases, gift cards, newspapers, magazines, comics, coupon books, eBooks, digital downloads, Rosetta Stone® software, shipping, and all electronics, including the Sony® Reader and the Zune™.

A gourmet cook dreams of the shiny pots, untold number of gadgets, and serving dishes sold at Sur la Table. Alas, they rarely have sales, which is why I jumped at this one. Assorted items in nine categories are marked down. Graphite baking pans for a lasagna or casserole are $25 to $55 (orig $40 to $80). A four-piece steak knife set is $30 (orig $60). Both would make great gifts for a wedding or house warming.
Easter gear is all 30% off. A red wooden sign that will warm the hearts of chocolate lovers, above, is $9 (orig $37). A set of four fuzzy chicks to cheer up your Easter table are $12 (orig $20). Not sure if the sale is as extensive in stores (or at all), but I'll understand if you prefer to shop Sur la Table's isles, if only to fuel your foodie fantasies.
Reader Judy wrote me about the One Dollar Bookstore, her favorite place to pick up $1 reads. I hesitated to blog about the store because I have not been there and I don't often get over to Burbank, where A&S is located. But I didn't want to deprive anyone of a $1 book.
The store has fiction, non-fiction, hard and soft covers, used titles, children's books, coffee table books, cookbooks, craft and gardening books, and comics. They are not organized so you have to peruse the shelves yourself. Judy bought hardcover books by Jonathan Kellerman, Stuart Woods, David Baldacci and Wilbur Smith. She also bought a Jay Leno book.
All sales are final. Visit them at 301 San Fernando Blvd. in Burbank. (818) 238-0371. Hours are Sun to Thur 10am to 10pm, Fri and Sat 10am to 12am.
The store is partners with A&S Books, which owns Crown Books, which runs the Web site. Two reviews on Yelp give it the thumbs up.
The online and mail order retailer Garnet Hill sells women's clothes by Eileen Fisher and similar styles, kids clothes, and home gear. Basically it's one stop shopping for moms. They have a sale of the day and today there is one item in each category.
An Eileen Fisher fine cotton cardigan is $74 (orig $118). Lace trimmed tanks for girls and toddlers are $16 (orig $20 and $22). Vibrant red, orange, and pink flowers perk up blue 200-thread count sheets, above, which are sold separately.
Thanks, Sarah!
The price of a first class stamp, now $.41, goes up to $.42 May 12. (Inflation and all that jazz.) That means it's a great time to buy $.41 Forever stamps, which are still good after the price goes up.
The post office has stocked 5 billion Forever stamps to meet demand. You can buy them at post offices, contract postal units, consignment locations, automated postage centers, vending machines, and online.
Saving a penny per stamp does not make sense if you
a) hate going to the post office
b) have a history of losing stamps
c) don't mail letters
d) already buy rolls of 100 at Costco for a few pennies off
You can also buy discounted postage stamps from collectors looking to unload their goods.
Two's Company Interiors, which decorates homes for sale with furniture and artwork, is going out of business. They are selling small furniture items (end tables, mirrors, nightstands) and the office furniture the business has used (desks, file cabinets). Don't expect big items like couches or chairs because there won't be any. The owner is retiring because of the crummy housing market. Small furniture items run $50 to $125 and art work (contemporary, Western, Swedish and Americana paintings and prints) run $15 to $300, an employee said.
Sale starts Friday and ends Tuesday. Hours are Friday from 8:30 to 4:30, Sat and Sun from 8:30 to 3:30, and Mon and Tue 8:30 to 4:30. Visit them at 20620 Plummer St. in Chatsworth near Lamps Plus on the south side of the street. Parking and entrance in back. Thanks, Theresa!
The upscale kitchen store Williams-Sonoma has decent sales online with plenty of Easter items. Mini Easter totes that look like a chick, bunny or pink tulip, above, are $9 for a pair (orig $12). Perfect for holding a few treats. Six chocolate carrots for decoration and eating are $10 (orig $15).
Non-Easter sale items include a set of three earthenware canisters with a blue and white wine pattern are $40 (orig $100). Not bad at all. A stainless steel wine bucket is $29 (orig $49). Thanks, Sarah!
Get $10 off your tab of $30 or more at Bed, Bath and Beyond stores now until April 20, 2008. Not good online. You can print this coupon more than once, though I think you can only use one per transaction.
Caveats: not good on gift cards and the following brands: All-Clad, Nautica®, Tempur-Pedic®, Wusthof®, AeroGrow, Margaritaville®, The Sharper Image, DKNY, Tommy Bahama®, Wedgwood®, Lenox®, Waterford®, Vera Wang, Nambe®, Riedel, Orrefors Kosta Boda, Oreck®, Capresso, Miele, kate spade, Swarovski,
Versace, Alessi, Richard Ginori, and Frette Home products.
A men's valet with room for a watch, keys, wallet, sunglasses, cuff links and other manly items is $20 after you use the coupon (sale price $30). Check to see that it's for sale in your local store because the coupon does not work online. Find a BBB near you.
A reader named Debbie called in to recommend NoHo Custom Framing in North Hollywood. She says they have "terrific deals and do beautiful work." She has checked around and believes they have some of the best prices around. The place got a stellar review on Yelp from a guy who said the shop did the piece at right for $50. I have never been there.
Visit them at 11410 Burbank Blvd., Suite 8, in North Hollywood. (818) 980-0114. Thanks, Debbie!
10% off thousands of items at Design Within Reach does not seem like a great deal to me, but I'm guessing the demand for their sleek, modern furniture is strong enough that even 10% will have the house proud calculating where a new chair will fit. DWR's stuff is gorgeous, after all. Warning: ample budget required.
A funky but really cool bookshelf, above, is $445 (orig $495). Browse all their categories, like bedroom, classics, seating, storage, and dining. Within each category there is an "on sale" tab at the bottom. Sale ends Tuesday, March 18. Find a store near you.
Get 100 business cards from Staples for $2 including shipping. Ends today! Click on the above link then look on the right for the box advertising the sale. When I click on the box the page comes up but doesn't load fully so I don't know if it is not working or just overloaded with people trying to get the deal.
Use coupon code 93128. Good online or over the phone (800-378-2753).
Now until Saturday, March 8 get $10 of your purchase of $25 or more at Office Depot stores. It's part of their grand opening event, but the coupon is good at all their stores. Good on supplies, furniture, cameras, printers, TVs and other stuff. Must have the coupon to get the discount. Find a store near you.
Caveats: not good on computers, gift cards, stamps, HP ink and toner, wireless, satellite Internet, technology or installation. Not good online.
Sears mondo tool sale ends Saturday. All the tools on this page are half off, including a 12-inch tool bag for $5 (orig $10) and a Craftsman mini digital multimeter for $10 (orig $20).
A Craftsman 245 -piece tool set that comes with a three-drawer chest is $200 (orig $250). A similar 263-piece tool set for $170 (orig $270) has already sold out online but check if it's available at your local store or if they will give you a rain check.
Browse all the tool categories on sale by looking at the left hand column of this page. Find a Sears near you.
The Dock Downtown, a discount furniture and home furnishings store, is going out of business March 9 and until then everything is 20% off the lowest marked price. Here is their selection of upholstered sofas, which they claim are priced 40 to 80% below retail. No prices online but you can browse their selection of beds, chairs, and dining room chairs. They also sell ottomans, sleeper sofas, benches and tables.
Visit them at 1481 East 4th St. in Los Angeles. (323) 446-0281 ext. 201. Hours are Thursday through Saturday from 10 to 6 and Sunday and Monday from 11 to 5. Cash and credit card only. Parking on site is free. From the Valley take 101 South or 5 South, exit 4th st, turn right onto 4th and the store is between Clarence and Anderson.
Get $10 off orders of $70 or more at Petsmart online until March 31, 2008. Use promo code SAVEMAR in caps when checking out. It comes up right at the beginning of the checkout process, which is nice because you know right away if it is working. Until March 17 all toys are 10% off and Flexi retractable leashes are 20% off until March 31. A 24 oz box of IAMS puppy biscuits is $3.50.
Caveats: limit one coupon per customer per transaction. Not valid with any other discount or offer.
Those jersey cotton sheets I was salivating over last week are now on sale for $10 at Target (orig $20). I dropped by this morning to check the quality and decided they were soft enough to buy a set, which will replace our red flannel sheets that my Mom gave me when I went to college. (They kept me very warm on the East Coast but now have a few holes.) The set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet and two pillow cases. I do hope they get a little softer with washing, however.
Many other sheet sets, towels and bathmats are on sale through March 8, 2008. Looks like the sale is also online. Scroll down to where it says Weekly Ad, then click on sheets or towels. Find a Target near you.
Thinking of sprucing up your yard for Easter? Head to Smith & Hawken's garden sale to get 20% off garden structures, arches, edgers, and window boxes. If only I had some dirt to dig my hands into. For those who do, a steel twining arch is $175 (orig $219) and spreadable trellises are $33 to $38. A little wooden bridge that adds whimsy to any yard, right, is $159 (orig $199).
Browse all the sales here. Unclear how long the sale lasts. Find a Smith & Hawken near you.
Get $20 off $120 at Overstock.com. Expires March 3, 2008. A cherry veneer bed frame with simple, open lines, above, is $430 (orig $829). Browse their computers and electronics, home improvement items, and bedroom furniture.
Caveats: discount excludes books, music, movies and games.
Spring is around the corner and that means it's time to get gardening. It is time to plant herbs and vegetables, shade-loving vines like Boston Ivy, spring perennials, elephant ear and caladium bulbs, according to my Home Depot Garden Club flyer.
Before you start digging, spend a little time creating a plan for what will go where. Pencil and paper always helps you remember what you decided. Also leave time to clean up last year's garden - raking leaves, pulling weeds, and prepping the soil. May be a good idea to check your watering system for leaks or adjust for the new plants and tune up mowers and power tools. Start now and by March 20 - the first day of spring - you will already have a few plants in the ground!
I like Green Thumb in Canoga Park (21828 Sherman Way) for gardening advice and the wide range of plants they stock. OSH and Home Depot have cheaper plants but you have to watch more closely for quality. And it's almost impossible to find someone if you have a question. If you do track someone down, forget about them actually knowing anything about plants. OSH has a direct link from its home page to various coupons, many for garden items.
Get $20 off your purchase of $150 or more at Staples now through Thursday Feb 28. Very few exclusions! Good in stores, online or over the phone. Print the coupon or enter code 17794 when buying online or over the phone (1-800-333-3330).
Caveats: not good on services, gift cards, postage stamps or prior purchases. Find a Staples near you.
Looks like this discount can be used on goods from any part of the store when you shop Target online. Expires March 1, 2008. When checking out use coupon code TC749CY2. I like these forest green jersey sheets for $20 for king, queen, CA king, full or twin. My friend has jersey sheets and they were so soft and warm I thought it was flannel at first touch.
You can also get free shipping on tabs of $50 or more when you buy from these categories: men's, women's, kids' clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories, baby gear, bed and bath, home décor and lighting. No coupon needed for free shipping.
When my mom offered to cover all my books in college I was relieved because I knew they added up to $300+ per semester. My chemistry book alone cost $112 and it was only for one semester! Now students can turn to Chegg.com, a Web site that rents textbooks.
Prices are about 40 percent of the list price of a new book, according to a story by the Kansas City Star in Missouri. For every book rented Chegg.com will plant a tree. Students buy a tree in textbooks every year, according to the site.
Another textbook rental site is BookRenter.com, which boasts prices 50 percent to 75 percent below retail. Rental periods range from 1 to 4 months and shipping is included in the book price.
Both are great sources to check out if you can't find the books you need used.
My mother is reading it. My Aunt is reading it. And at a gathering of friends this weekend I found out three of them were reading it. "Three cups of tea" is a non-fiction book about a mountaineer who winds up in an isolated village in Pakistan after he fails to climb K2 on the China/Pakistan border. Depressed and desolate, the climber, Greg Mortenson, is taken in by the villagers and so impressed with their generosity he promises to return and build a school. The book is on the New York Times bestseller list and so with so many peeps reading it, I figured I should look into the best places to buy it.
Amazon has it for $17.13 new or used from $13 and up. Overstock.com has it for $8.11 for the hardcover. Harvard Booksellers has it for $7.18. eBay
has many copies at rock bottom prices but with shipping and handling it adds up to about as much as other retailers. HotBookSale has it in paperback for $4.90 with free shipping. Other low prices for the book are listed on Google Shopping.
Of course the best price - free - is at the LA public library, where most copies are checked out or in transit. But you can place a hold on the book to get the next available copy. They will even deliver it to the branch of your choosing!
Unlike most of Borders' coupons, this one does not require you to be a member. Until February 27, 2008 get 20% off the list price of one item at Borders with this printable coupon.
Caveats: not good online or towards previous purchases, gift cards, magazines, comics, special orders, electronics (including Zune and the Sony Reader), coffee, Rosetta stone products, or shipping.
Find a store near you. Happy reading.
I am salivating over this sale because I loooooove to buy organization stuff. What better than a piece of colorful plastic to help me battle the world's chaos? But let's get down to business.
The Container Store sale lasts until April 15, which is appropriate because it is being called a tax sale.
A white monthly magnetic calender is $16 (orig $20). Blue and green are not on sale. My neighbor has one and not only is she super busy, but super organized and on the ball. The aptly named mighty magnet rounds are $10 (orig $13). Lots more file folders, mesh file holders, and choas-eliminating tools.
Browse all the sale stuff. The site also provides "expert help" on a variety of organizing questions, like To Keep Or Not To Keep. Find a store near you.
And you thought the madness of shopping at 3 am for super sales was limited to the winter holidays. Well, think again. Kmart is offering extra discounts this weekend if you shop overnight - from 10 pm to 6 am. Here are their nightowl discounts:
Get an extra 20% off all My First Craftsman Toys, like this kiddie sized Ford F-150, for $160 (so you'd save $32 off that). Pretty much all the other MFC toys are $5 to $20 so losing sleep over a few bucks seems crazy.
Get an extra 15% off all small appliances, and get a five-drawer Craftsman tool organizer for $100 (orig $150). Get an extra 10% off bikes, patio furniture, and car seats. Read all their nightly sales here.
Looks like you can also get the discounts online. Find a Kmart near you.
Today through Monday furniture discounter The Dock Downtown is having a huge President's Day sale, says Bargainsla. Look for markdowns up to 50% on coffee tables, media cabinets, dining tables, and chairs, patio furniture, consoles and more. They have modern and traditional pieces.
BargainsLA found a teak criss cross bookshelf for $463 (orig $950) and a teak TV console with glass doors and drawers for $398 (orig $795). To get an extra $50 off your tab of $250+ print out this page from BargainsLA.
Visit them at 1481 East 4th St. in Los Angeles. (323) 446-0281 ext. 201. Hours Thur to Sat 10 to 6, Sun to Mon 11 to 5. Free on site parking. Delivery is $105 and up for five pieces.
Home Depot is having a President's Day sale this weekend (prez day is Monday Feb 18). Get 20% off 1 and 5 gallons of Behr paint, including interior and exterior paint, primer and decorative finishes. Four-packs of compact florescent bulbs are $7 and slide dimmers are $6.50 each (orig $10). A low-flow toilet is $99.
Not too early to think about spring planting. A three-gallon azalea is $4 (orig $5) and six-packs of annuals are $2. Sale ends Monday, Feb 18, with some prices good to Feb 20. Browse the entire weekly ad. Find a Home Depot near you.

If you like to buy environmentally friendly products for home and organic, but pretty clothes and bedding, Gaiam.com is the place to shop online. And since this kind of political correctness has a substantial price tag, the winter clearance catalog sale is the time to shop there. Up to 75 percent off!
There's all sorts of things from cute organic and yoga clothes to bedding. I have bought much of my linens from Gaiam because I'm picky about the materials I sleep and wash with. And I have never been disappointed in its quality, durability or attractiveness. I've got my eye on the organic cotton percale sage duvet cover ($79) and maybe some sheets to go with it. Don't the butter ones look delish? I've got some pillowcases from this set that I love.
I'm also keen on this sleeveless hoodie, for only $15! And this organic t-shirt for $4. Since I hate gift wrapping, I might stock up on these recycled gift bags and since I have two large dogs who think making stains is part of their job description, I might try this organic pet stain remover for $6.
Lots and lots to choose from. And, if like me, you become a regular sale shopper ( I almost never buy anything from their site full price), you will get nifty things like the $10 off coupon when I spend more than $100, which I certainly will if I buy those sheets.
Happy and healthy hunting on Gaiam.com
How romantic! Get 15% off washers and dryers at Sears thru Valentine's Day. A Whirlpool high efficiency front loader is $620 (orig $730). Search all their washer and dryers.
Sears will deliver your new W/D free and haul away your old machine if you spend $400 or more and mail in a rebate. Ask about it when you make your purchase. Find a store near you.
I'm set for wine for like, 6 months. Hubby tipped me off to a wine sale at Albertson's after I asked him to pick up a tasty bottle given to us by our neighbor (her dog did a number 1 *and* a number 2 on our rug).
Seems like a good third of the bottles were marked down when I dropped in. I got a bottle of Smoking Loon Chardonnay and Smoking Loon Merlot for $6 each (orig both $10), a bottle of Fat Bastard Chardonnay and Fat Bastard Shiraz for $10 each (orig both $12), and a bottle of Pepperwood Chardonnay for $5 (orig $10).
But my big score was five bottles of Ravenswood Vinter's Blend 2005 Zinfandel for $8.09 each (orig $11). My neighbor said it was one of her favorite low-budget wines and I whole heartedly agree. It's mild, unlike a lot of cheap vino that beats up your tongue, but flavorful. You can also get it for $8 at BevMo but then there's shipping to think of.
I felt like an alcoholic checking out with 10 bottles of wine and...
Thru Saturday, Sears has a big 'ol sale on clothes, appliances, camera, tires, tools, fitness equipment, bedding and a whole lot more. Browse all sale categories.
Get a free 3D sander with any online tool purchase of $50 or more. Fine jewelry is 40 to 70% off and watches are 20 to 30% off. Juniors screen T-shirts are $8 to $10 (orig $20). Handbags are 30 to 40% off. Cameras and small electronics are discounted, including a Sony Cybershot 7.2MP for $160.
Best deals seem to be online, but it's also a good idea to examine the product in stores before you buy. Find a store near you.
Cost Plus World Market has a few great prices for home items, like 99-cent stemless wine glasses, which I've seen for $2 at Crate & Barrel and $7 at Pottery Barn. Also on sale is a 24-bottle stacking wine rack with six shelves, four bottles per shelf. Classic white stoneware pieces go for $2 a pop. Glass storage jars are 99-cents each. Booze also on sale. Some items available only in stores.

Get $5 off your tab of $25 or more at Office Depot through Feb 17, 2008. Items eligible for the discount items include office supplies, desk accessories, furniture, lighting, filing/storage supplies and cleaning supplies.
Print out this coupon for the discount. Find a store near you. Caveats: may not be used to "tech" items like computers, printers, cameras, TVs, monitors, software and memory. Also not good on gift cards, past purchases, stamps, installation services.
Wait! Don't buy that book on your "to read" list just yet. Starting tomorrow you can get 20% off any one item at Barnes & Noble online or in stores. Online use coupon code T3E9J3V at checkout. The 20% discount will automatically be applied to the highest-priced item in your cart. In stores print out this coupon.
Caveats: not good at college stores. Cannot be used for textbooks, gift certificates, past purchases, memberships, and a few other things. Read the fine print to be sure.
You have to be a member of the Auto Club of Southern California to use this coupon, but you may well get back the cost of joining AAA with this one deal. Thru Dec 31, 2008 Best Buy will give AAA members 20% off home theater services, computer support services, or car installation services.
Joining AAA costs $47 for one year, plus you can add another member of your household for $24. Remember, the card goes with the person, not the car. So if I'm riding in your car and it breaks down, I can use my AAA card to get a tow.
Caveats: can only be used in store, one per family, not good on prior purchases, and does not apply to charges for materials, kits, harnesses, parts and extensive labor. Sounds complicated. Ask for an estimate of how the charges break down before you agree to buy the service and ask how much the coupon will save you.

Software.com has a quick quiz to help you choose which tax software is right for you. It asks about 10 questions, starting with whether you want to download the software or use it online. It also asks whether you itemize deductions, whether you want the software to do your federal or state taxes or both, if you will file a Schedule C for business taxes, or if you want tech support.
At the end of the quiz it links to the recommended software, which the site is happy to sell to you. Each product has user reviews and specs. It's a good idea to shop around to see if Software.com has the best software prices. I'd suggest checking Office Depot, Staples, and the manufacturer of the recommended software.

Yet another small business closing shop. Pop's Unfurnished Furniture on Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills is clearing out its stock and has markdowns good enough to make me wish my apartment was bigger! There is still a good selection and, contrary to the store's name, some pieces are finished. I saw a large TV hutch made of thick, hard wood for $700. A low two-door cabinet with a light brown finish, good for the foot of your bed or your media collection, was $150.
A high six-drawer dresser with roller drawers was $540, a nightstand was $120. A massive buffet, similar to the one above, was $1,000. A kitchen cart with tile on the counter part, two small drawers, two shelves and spots for four wine bottles was $250. A kitchen table that would easily seat eight was $600.
Most of the furniture is made out of maple or pine. Pop's sells varnishes and finishes. The sale will last until the stock is gone, then the company will move the Mexican Rustic furniture line into the space. They accept cash, credit card and check. All sales are final.
Visit them at 22223 Ventura Blvd. in Woodland Hills, a hair east of the Topanga entrace to 101 south/east. (818) 226-1900. Hours Mon to Sat 10 to 7, Sun 10 to 6. UPDATE: The 818 number may not be working. Pop's also lists 888-838-0707 on their Web site, but this number is not staffed Tue and Thurs.
Amazon is having a kitchen sale with a few other home items thrown in for good measure. A steel canister with seven spatulas made of silicon is $20 (orig $50). Great for a house warming present, a college student setting up their apartment for the first time, or a chef who loves red! A leaning shelf by Global Distinctions is $50 (orig $250). Ivory sheets with a 420-thread count, queen size, are $37 (orig $100). Unclear when sale ends.
Reader Sid writes that he recently came across the Gibson USA factory outlet store in Commerce near the Citadel Outlets. He says "this is a HUGE company that supplies most of the dinnerware to Wal-Mart, Target and many other retailers. Not only do they have tons of dinnerware in both open stock and sets at great prices, they've got flatware, glasses, fine china and some great chatckes for your pad!" Sid saw a 16-piece stoneware set for $15 that retails around $30 and says shopping there is like going to Big Lots because you never know what you're going to find.
Unfortunately, the outlet is closed on weekends. Visit them at 2410 Yates Ave. in Commerce. Hours are Mon to Fri 9 to 4:30. (323) 832-8900 x1144. Thanks, Sid!

Owner Victor Feany said the store wasn't profitable anymore. He bought it 33 years ago from the original owner, Don Guglielmino. Feany always wanted to run a hardware store. "My dream came true," Feany said. "I had a good 30 years here. I can't complain." Keep reading the story.
The furniture chain Levitz is going out of business and prices are really marked down. This is a good thing for Californians because 32 of the chain's 76 stores are in the Golden State.
At the Northridge store prices were up to 80% off, according to reader Christine, who called from the store! She saw dinnerware, dish butlers, armoires, silk pillows, chairs, and down comforters on super sale. A queen sized Pacific Coast down comforter was $66 (orig $219). An "alternative down" comforter was $24 (orig $80). Power strips were $7 (orig ~$20). Online, I spotted the four-piece San Paolo bedroom set, made of dark cherry, above, for $1,500. Wonder how much it would be in the store?
Everything is final sale, no returns. Find a Levitz near you. The Northridge store is at 9301 Tampa Ave. (818) 993-1310. Hours are Mon to Sat 10 to 9 and Sun from 11 to 7. Thanks, Christine!

A Montego small bar is $300 (orig $600) and holds 10 wine bottles and at least 10 pieces of stemware, plus it has a small drawer. A red and white striped cosmetic bag is $10 (orig $20). Cool Web site! Rentometer.com will tell you if that monthly check you grudgingly send your landlord is higher or lower than similar apartments in your hood. Enter your address, the number of bedrooms, your rent, and how many apartments are in the building and it creates a map comparing your apartment with others nearby. A plus sign means they pay more than you, a minus sign means they pay less, an equal sign means they pay the same. Click on each sign to see how much your neighbors are paying.
The map it created for me did not list the other apartments in my building, however. The farthest apartment it listed was .63 miles away. Now I'm trying to remember the address for all my apartments going back to college! If I was getting a deal, gosh dang it I want to know about it.

If there's one thing I wish I could change about my apartment it would be the lack of framed artwork. I step into our neighbor's pad and a few framed prints make a world of difference. We already have decent couches (brown leather, from Macy's) and the place isn't too cluttered so it could benefit from art. (Even I'm tiring of the three small oil paintings I made in a class years ago. A canvas of two-dimensional yarn - how did I convince myself to put that on the wall?)
The Web site Ezine articles suggests looking for cheap framed art at estate sales, auctions, consignment stores, and Internet sites. I visited TheFind.com, a site that list all sorts of items - not just art - according to unbiased and objective product rankings. I.e. not by how much retailers have paid to get a high ranking. Dozens of pages of results for a "framed art" search included a variety of traditional, modern and abstract pieces by known and lesser known artists. A lot of it seemed cliched, but then again, this is not the place to find original art.
I think I could look at Andy Warhol's piece, "Portrait of Maurice," or a black lab, for a long while. It is $199. A print of Farbstudie Quadrate, 1913 by Wassily Kandinsky, is $195. So how do you know if you should buy a piece of art? My friend Rachelle said her Dad told her that you should only buy a piece of art if you want to look at it everyday for the rest of your life. Of course, lower prices give you more leeway. I think that pooch poster is worth five years, at least.
UPDATE: This coupon has expired. If anybody still has a link to it that works, let me know and I will post it.
PREVIOUSLY: Get $10 off any houseplant at Lowe's until Jan 31, 2008 with this printable coupon. I've heard there are wildly cheap prices for prescription glasses online so I decided to investigate. I won't be buying for myself as my current pair has a relatively new prescription (yes, my eyes are still changing) but I am considering getting contacts. As much as I like my current pair for everyday stuff, when I get dressed up to go out on the town they make me look like a lawyer! Not my goal.
Anywho, 39DollarGlasses.com has dozens of pairs for - surprise - $39. The NY company says they have such low prices because they save a ton of money operating only online. A plastic pair similar to mine are $39 (I paid about $130 for them), and with my light prescription the total came to $64, including an extra $25 for anti-reflective coating. Single vision reading glasses also start at $39, bifocals with a line start at $79, bifocals without the line starts at $89. Once you choose the type of lenses, there are these optional add-ons: high-index lenses are $50, tints run $10 to $60, polarization is $50 and polycarbonate polarization is $89. Glasses come with a hard case.
My last bill from Lenscrafters for the prescription only was $128 (complete pair about $250). Yowza! For your next pair I'd recommend browsing in stores to get a good idea of what you want, perhaps even take pictures of the frames you like with a digital camera, then check online to see if you can find something similar. No brand names here, but a decent selection. Sunglasses too!
At the bottom of their home page you can read about their return policy: "We unconditionally guarantee all our frames and lenses to be delivered exactly as they were ordered and free of defects." Read about the eyeglass materials.

For once Woot is not sold out when I check their site. But each day's item is only for sale for one day and they go fast. At midnight they start selling a new product. Today's item is the Honeywell ceramic space heater with remote for $26 +$5 shipping. Amazon has it for $50. Woot.com's pitch for their product is funny enough to post here:
"How many times has THIS happened to YOU???
Your spouse: Time to go to my aunt’s house for dinner.
You: Eh, I’d rather not. It’s too cold over there.
Your spouse: I want a divorce.
We all know people who just won’t turn up their thermostats – although we WISH we DIDN’T! Now there’s a SOLUTION - a solution called the Honeywell SureSet Ceramic Heater! Take it along when you visit that chilly cheapskate in your life, use it to warm up your billiard room, or keep it in your cubicle! Then watch what happens as your life gets a whole lot WARMER!
Your boss: Did you finish those reports?
You: No, I was too busy setting up my new Honeywell SureSet Ceramic Heater.
Your boss: Well, don’t get too comfortable – I’m making you my new vice-president! You’ll need that heater in your corner office!
But that’s ONLY the BEGINNING! The remote control lets you adjust, readjust, and threeadjust the temperature from ACROSS THE ROOM, while the programmable thermostat, auto shut-off timer, and oscillating sweep work together to keep you WARM! Heat up your home, your office, and your LIFE with the Honeywell SureSet Ceramic Heater!
Your child: My therapist has really helped me realize how horrible my childhood was, and how it’s mainly your fault.
You: Maybe this Honeywell SureSet Ceramic Heater will help.
Your child: I love you, Daddy or Mommy!"
Read the mostly positive comments about this heater on Woot forums.
Found a few things worth noting in the Pottery Barn catalog that arrived yesterday. Two types of bar shelving, one that holds 6 bottles of wine and one that has wire racks to hang glasses, are $40 each (orig $55 each). They come in black, brown, or white. A bronzed tree that holds cards or photos in its leaves (like a fancy French memory board) is $30 (orig $89), and measures 27 x 3 x 34 inches. I think the 3 inches depth is mostly at the bottom where the trunk sticks out. I don't see the exact tree online (try ordering over the phone at 800-922-5507, product 23-9243528) but there is a similar one for $35 (orig $39). For those Christmas fiends, a set of 4 twig reindeer place card holders are $14 (orig $29). It comes with 20 cards that you write someone's name on then the reindeer holds it in its antlers. Search all their sale stuff.
The fancy schmancy kitchen store Sur la Table is having their annual winter sale with select kitchen equipment marked down 20 to 50 percent. These categories are 20% off: white ware, gadgets, and placemats. See all the sale categories. A set of 4 oval ramekins great for creme brulee or snacks are $5.56 (orig $7). An elegant crystal lead-free decander is $24 (orig $30). A set of 8 south of the border Mexican spices comes in neat little tins, above, for $10 (orig $40). Spices include Achiote Seed (2.5 oz), Epazote (.85 oz), Canella (.40 oz), Chipotle Chili Flakes (1.4 oz), Ancho Chili Powder (2 oz), Mexican Blast (.80 oz), Fajita Seasoning (2.5 oz.) and Adobo (4.0 oz).

He is sick as a dog but still a hard core bargain hunter. While filling two prescriptions yesterday, Hubby noticed a sign at the entrance to CVS offering a $25 giftcard for each new prescription filled there there. He waited for his meds then asked about the discount while being rung up. An employee told him it had already expired so he paid his bill and asked to see the manager. Hubby explained to the manager that the sign still advertised the gift cards and showed his receipt. The manager said they would take down the sign and gave him a $50 gift card. Score!
A lot of chain pharmacies are offering specials to attract customers away from the remaining independent pharmacies. Rite Aid will give you a $20 gift card for transferring a prescription. Look in the Sunday newspaper ads for more offers. I feel like I see them almost every week.
If you're not within driving distance of the $4 calendar sale (3 for $10) at Pegasus bookstores in Berkeley, I know you are burning up with desire to get a cheap 2008 calendar.
You could try a 99-cent store. Hubby went by one yesterday and found the selection limited to black labs, those old fashioned black and white pics of little kids where one has a daisy and a yellow hat, and girly calendars. He happily replaced last year's black lab calendar with a new black lab calendar. Poses include closeups, side profiles, running dogs, and leaping dogs. All black. All labs. That calendar goes in the study.
Judy Zwolak, a blogger for Suite101, also has a few suggestions. Overstock.com has a good selection of wall calendars mostly in the $8 to $10 range with a few exceptions. Office depot has a $10 monthly wall calendar and Vista Print has a wall calendar you can customize with your own photo for each month that goes for $13 plus shipping. Great for grandparents!
UPDATE: Calendars.comhas some 2008 calendars half off. Use code CSDOWN8 for an additional 20%. Get free shipping with code CCUSFS27. Slickdeals.net lists some additional codes which you may be able to stack:
MS815 for 15% off
EM157 for 15% off
TFFS8 for 10% off AND free shipping
FS9358 for free shipping
Hope it works for you!
Through Jan 27, 2008 buy one frame at Aaron Brothers and get a second frame for a penny. The second frame doesn't have to be the same as the first. Once a year the Container Store, seller of organizing dreams, marks down their stuff-ordering Elfa systems by 30 percent. There are shelving and drawer arrangements for every mess: closets, the neglected office and the didn't-we-just-clean-5-minutes-ago kitchen. They even tackle the room most people don't even attempt to organize: the garage. A perky office system goes for $325 (orig $464), a kid's closet system goes for $347 (orig $497). Clearly, the sale is timed to coincide with new year resolve to get organized so make sure if you shell out for a bunch of baskets and hangers you have time to put the whole thing together. Lighten the burden of organizing your finances with this half-off code for three Quicken products, good when you buy them directly through software maker Intuit. Use code 4855359860 to get Quicken Deluxe 2008 for $30, Quicken Premier 2008 for $45, and Quicken Home & Business 2008 for $50. Not too shabby.

Get a free address stamp or address labels through VistaPrint. They also do free business cards (that out you on the back by saying they were free). For the address stamp you get 10 style choices, 6 of which have one line for your name and two for your address. The other four say FAX, COPY, THANK YOU, or PAID. Useful for a business owner! Dang, you do have to pay for shipping, which is $5.45 for the "slow" mail that takes 21 days. Still, this is a step up from the labels charities send me. Unclear when deal ends.

May also work on sale merchandise and over the phone (800-922-5507). Unclear if it also works in the store. Maybe it's time I finally use that $46 gift card I still have from my wedding!
Online only. Gotta use your mastercard. Expires Dec 31. Get 40% off one book online using code X8X9X3K at checkout. Read the members coupon, or the non-members coupon. More caveats: good only on books but not textbooks or at B&N's college stores.
If you want to cut down on unwanted catalogs, check out Catalog Choice. The Web site is sponsored by The Ecology Center, which wants to cut back on the 19 billion paper catalogs discarded each year. To put your name on the opt out list, fill out their online registration form, find which catalogs you don't want from their list, and decline them. Catalog Choice sends the bad news onto the folks sending you the glossy sale pitches. Unfortunately, it can take 10 weeks to stop getting the catalogs.
Signing up helps cut back on a lot of waste:

* Contribution to global warming – 5.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equal to the annual emissions of two million cars
* Waste water discharges from this volume of paper – 53 billion gallons of water, enough to fill 81,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools
Could it be true? A two-year subscription to Time Out New York - the Big Apple's going out guide - for FREE? Well this link claims to be the real deal. I signed up my sister, who is a nursing student in NYC, and hopefully she will not just be getting a mountain of junk mail. Send it to your friends and family who are loud, pushy, New Yorkers - a wonderful breed when you are one of them!
The Valley Indoor Swap Meet is closing! Their final day in business is Sunday, Dec 30 and there are sure to be some good deals as vendors try to sell off their remaining stock. They are not closing out of choice, (so you will hear some grumbling,) but because the land owner sold the property to a developer. Meet vendors sell an incredible variety of stuff, from low-quality plastic products to beautiful silk flowers, clothing, and jewelry. Visit them at 6701 Variel Avenue in Woodland Hills. (818) 340-9120.

I checked a few stores to compare prices on poinsettias, those festive red plants that add a little more holiday to your home. I need to pick up a few and figured you might too! The Longs Drugs flyer advertised 6-inch plants for $6 each, Anawalt has 4-inch plants for $4 and 6-inch plants for $6, Albertsons and Ralphs have 6-inch plants for $8, Vons has "small" plants for $7.50 and large ones for $26, Trader Joe's 6-inch plants for $6.29 and bigger ones for $9 to $20. Get two subscriptions to Real Simple for $24 with this offer. Looks like a good deal if other prices are any indication. Amazon has one 1-year subscription for $23, CheapMags.com has it for $29. The coupon inside this month's Real Simple is no better: three subscriptions for $44 ($14.60 each). Unclear when deal ends. I gobbled up the current issue last night and loved their gift guide and tips on how to NOT feel guilty. They also routinely have coupons for White House Black Market, Chico's, Eddie Bauer and Coldwater Creek. Thanks, Mouse!
The
Scholastic Holiday Book Fair is coming up with locations in Thousand Oaks and Culver City. I heard about this from a friend who has gone in past years and reports "the warehouse is HUGE and the deals are excellent...Although kids are allowed, it is not "Small Children" friendly as it is held in a large, sometimes very cold warehouse!"
Find a location near you. Thousand Oaks sale is Friday, 12/14: 12 PM to 6:30 PM and Saturday, 12/15: 9 AM to 6 PM.
Caveats: The sale is exclusively for book fair chairpeople and volunteers, registered homeschoolers, and School Personnel: principals, administrators, faculty, teachers, librarians, and media specialists. But I'm told if you are volunteer at a school, temple or church you will be able to get in.
Here are some of the deals: up to 80 % off bestsellers, chapter books, beginning readers, and activities. Up to 50% off books for all ages, software, and school supplies. Up to 30% off newest releases. Also a lot of $1 or less items. Thanks, Jen!
Reader Diana writes in with a recommendation for Renoma Lighting in Van Nuys. The Web site has scanned pages of their products but not item by item details.
"This is a factory outlet and I have bought three sets of lamps - a dining room ceiling fixture, two pendant lights for the kitchen and a floor reading lamp. The prices are factory - about 50% of retail stores and what is really great, if you see a lamp you like and the fixture is bronze, they can make it in chrome or whatever you want. They customize the finish and the shade, etc...I probably will never shop for lighting in a retail store again."
Pretty strong words. I myself have not been there and cannot vouch for it. If you are interested, visit them at 14617 Keswick Street in Van Nuys. (818) 782-2427 or renomalighting@aol.com. Let me know what you think!

Get 20% off one item at Linens 'n' Things with this printable coupon. Good in stores, not online. Expires Dec 31, 2007. I've gotten a lot of good use out of shoe organizers like this 9-pair rack for $30 (before coupon). They also have a limited selection of tablecloths and linens for your Thanksgiving table. Of course, those will go on super sale right after the holiday.
Caveats: not good on brands like SharperImage, All-Clad, J.A. Henckels, Tempur-Pedic, Godiva Chocolates and a few more. Read the fine print at the bottom of the coupon to make sure it's good on the thing you covet. Find a store near you.
Get $10 off your purchase of $50 or more at Petsmart with coupon code NEXTTEN, or sometimes it automatically deducts $10 from your cart. Unclear when it expires so don't wait if you need something for the furry companion in your life! Sadly, I do not have any pets but I can still shop vicariously for you! This pink studded leather collar is perfect for a sassy canine, for $15 to $25 depending on size. This kitty cave also looks rather enticing, for $28. Maybe it's time to get a hummingbird feeder for the wild birds outside. Remember to type the coupon code in CAPITAL LETTERS.
Get 5% to 10% off most everything at Sears during their friends and family sale. Unclear when it ends, though. Some items say they are discounted thru 11/16/07, others
are marked down thru 11/17/07. A few items are a little more than 10% off, TV's are 5% off. Buy with your Sears Card and get an extra $250 rebate with a 50-inch TV purchase, a $150 rebate with a 40-49-inch TV and a $50 rebate for TV's under 40 inches. No code needed. Find a store near you.
These items are hot, baby! At least they used to be. PropertyRoom.com auctions stolen and forfeited bicycles, jewelry and cars that police can't find the rightful owners of. They work with the LAPD, NYPD, and some 600 other police departments across the country. PropertyRoom.com picks up the goods, sells them online, and gives a chunk of the sale back to the squad. Just think, you may find a pound of heroin hidden in the trunk of your newly purchased Crown Vic!
But seriously, they have a lot of bicycles for sale, jewelry, electronics, coins, and 1-hour auctions. There's even a category for real estate!
I spotted this 10k gold ring with a blue topaz stone, currently bidding for $1 (two days left in the auction). Not too shabby. If you feel wierd about buying something used or possibly stolen, remember part of the purchase price goes to police. Maybe not your local babes in blue, but a copper somewhere. Also check carefully what the return policy is for the item you are considering, it may differ depending on the item.

Laura Lee Designs in Burbank and the Mica Lamp Company in Glendale are both having sales. The Mica Lamp Company manufactures copper and iron lighting fixtures and is having a three-day sale starting Friday, Nov 9 to Sunday, Nov 11. Again prices are significantly below retail. Visit them at 517 State St. in Glendale. (800) 905-2677.
BargainsLA reports that Culligan Water Systems in Sylmar is having a Sidewalk Sale on "new and used water softeners, reverse osmosis drinking water systems and whole house filters." The sale is brief - this Sat Nov 10 from 9 to 3 only. It's unclear how big the markdowns will be, but people don't usually sell stuff on the sidewalk unless they really want to get rid of it. Savvy? And how about this BONUS: There will be free hot dogs, burgers and drinks. Munch munch munch.
Visit them at 15580 Roxford St. in Sylmar.
This coupon comes at a fantastic time. You're starting to think about the holidays and a 25% off coupon for Cost Plus World Market pops up. The store has everything from festive decorations, neat chocolates and treats, plus more traditional gifts like Lavender Tea set for $15. Print it out for in store shopping or use coupon code FF11074 online. Good Nov 9 to 12, 2007 only. Print the coupon here. Caveats: not good on booze or gift cards. Find a store near you.
The FR Industries warehouse sale in the industrial section of North Hollywood that has a few interesting items, but also a lot of crap. Some prices were great, others seemed really high. A cute canvas makeup bag was $1 but a flimsy faux-kitschy apron was $10. A big section of long window curtains were $5, others were $25 to $50. Quality ranged from polyester to silk. A set of garden tools, including a satchel, 2 hand shovels, 2 mini rakes, and a pair of gloves, was $13. Sets of bar tools were $5 to $10. Gauzy wine bags were 50-cents each. All sales final.
The sale is run by an importer who supplies curtains and sheets to home furnishing stores. The items for sale are overruns, samples, and discontinued goods. The warehouse is open Nov 2-4, Nov 9-11, Nov 16-18, Nov 24-25, Nov 30, Dec 1-2, and December 7-9. Fridays they are open noon to 4pm, Saturdays from 9 to 4 and Sundays from 10 to 3. Cash preferred, 2% fee for credit cards. Visit them at 11840 Vose St. in North Hollywood. (818) 503-9143.
Costco recently started a trade-in program for PCs, LCD monitors, digital cameras, camcorders, game systems and MP3 players. They give you a Costco gift card for the value of the trade in. If your old crap ain't worth nothin' they will recycle it for free. Yay! I tried it with my old school 20G iPod, not that I want to trade it in, and the site estimated the value was $56. My Mac laptop, which I DO want to get rid of, apparently has a value of $40. Not exactly a downpayment on a new one. Sigh.
Check how much your old stuff is worth here.
Get a $10 off coupon at Sur la Table and combine that with their ongoing $5 off deal to get $15 off a purchase of $15. Wahoo! Free stuff. Use coupon code 113007 but make sure your bill equals at least $15 or it won't work. I like this honey pumpkin serving bowl that has lots of matching plates and tureens, for $25. The $5 off shows up in your shopping cart and you enter the coupon code on the same page as your credit card info (at the bottom of the page). Unclear when it expires but great deals like this do not last long! If you don't need anything think about checking an item off your Christmas list!
Free shipping on all cookware sets, knife block sets, coffee makers and espresso makers thru Dec 31, 2007. Thanks SlickDeals.
UPDATE: So many people used this coupon that Sur la Table killed it. It's not good any longer. Thanks, Earl!
Free shipping on furniture this weekend only at Overstock.com. I have been wanting to buy matching bedroom furniture or at least a nice wood bed frame for awhile. I like this dark wood modern look for $1,950 (orig $5,500). But I am a little wary of making such a big purchase online. The set includes a dresser, mirror, two nightstands and queen size bed that would allow hubby can hang his feet off the edge when sleeping (necessary). This set for $1900 (orig $3,800) is similar but the lines are even cleaner.
The craftman mission style also has got me excited, for $3,100 (orig $3,900).
Read their return policy for general items. For bulky items like furniture their return policy is that once you sign for the delivery you pay for any return shipping charges. So you have to inspect really carefully and refuse it if it is damaged. Shipping charges are normally $100 to $700 so take your time.
Get free ground shipping on tabs of $25 and up at PetSmart (normally you have to spend $50 for free shipping) with code FALLFS. Expires Nov 7, 2007. I like this set of doggie bones and treats for $38 to $48. Or these Piggy Twists for $7 to $20 seem like they would make any pooch happy. Oink oink!
The home improvement store Lowe's is giving a $10 gift card (good towards any purchase of $25 or more) when you sign up on their site. Requires name, address, dob, ph number, and email, but opting in for news of their sales is optional and you can always fudge some of the other numbers. I use my work address so junk mail doesn't drown me at home. Find a Lowe's near you.
UPDATE: this coupon has expired, unfortunately.
When 20% off just isn't good enough at Linens -n- Things, get 25% off with coupon code FFOCT07. It's good on online purchases until Nov 28, 2007. Normally competitor Bed Bath and Beyond will accept LNT coupons, but since this is an online code I doubt it will work. This Calphalon turkey roasting pan is $30 (orig $40), and DOES NOT come with a lid (the chili pot does, though) and is non stick for easy cleaning. After the coupon it's $22.50.
Save 50% off the cost of making digital copies of old family photographs or important documents until the end of the year when you mention today's story about Epoch Archiving in Chatsworth. The story goes "Running around collecting old family photographs and important documents while fires threaten your home is not the quickest way to evacuate, nor the safest. But it's common because not many people want to leave their wedding pictures, the title to their home, or other sentimental mementos behind. Now, there's a way to avoid putting yourself in danger while preserving that sepia-toned snapshot of your grandma when she was 3..." Read the rest of the story here. Visit Epoch's Web site or call them at 818-885-1959.
Who has time to make photo albums anymore? I haven't even gotten my wedding pictures develolped. But with MyPublisher.com, they put it together for you. If it sounds dorky, my Aunt has actually made some really good photo albums using this kind of thing. Now you can get a free photobook when you give them your email and get 20% off orders of $50 and up with code FALL2040. Same code gets you 40% off of orders of $100 and up. Expires Nov 7, 2007. See their Web site for details.
Get a $100 back when you buy a Dyson upright or canister vacuum from Sears now thru Oct 27, 2007. Clearance, closeouts and a few other vacuums are excluded. Lighting Direct is having a sale on compact florescent light bulbs, which are slightly more pricey than regular bulbs but last much, much longer and don't suck up as much electricity. Overall they save you money, even if the upfront cost is greater. Use coupon code BULB33 when checking out. This 60-watt equivalent bulb is $5 before the discount, but I've seen them for as much as $10 in stores. Not a huge stock left, so don't delay. A 75-watt equivalent is $5.55 and a 100-watt equivalent is $6.75, both before the discount.
Caveats: sale applies to Feit brand Energy Star CFL bulbs.
Expires Oct 31, 2007.
Discount Tire Direct is taking $100 off the price of 4 tires or 4 wheels when you buy them online. Don't wait, expires Oct 20, 2007. The discount will automatically be taken from the total in your shopping cart.
Got the Pottery Barn holiday catalogue in the mail yesterday and immediately flipped to the back to see if they any sales. Indeed! An Asian-inspired lacquered cabinet is $400 (orig $700) and comes in brown, brick red, or a woody yellow. Shipping is $75. Red-striped home office sorters and boxes are $7 to $10 (orig $12 to $19).
This glass wall vase is $13 (orig $40) and for some reason the price for a set of two is more than double the single price. Silly!
Most of the sales are online only. Check out their sale items here and their clearance items here. Find a store near you (though sale items vary widely from store to store). Unclear how long the sale lasts.
Materials Matter, a non-profit home improvement store in Corona, has basement bargain prices, according to a recent report on Channel 11. The goods are new or gently used. A 10-foot new Corian countertop was $195, granite countertops started at $159 (many looked pre-cut, however), and vessel sinks started at $159.
All proceeds go to an affordable housing program or other non-profit ventures, the report said. Materials Matter is open seven days a week from 9 to 5. Visit them at 1655 w 6th St #109 in Corona. (951) 256-4110.
Stopped by a local Big Lots this afternoon and was reminded that some of their prices are fantastic while others are on par with other retailers.
Among the good deals: a wood Labyrinth marble puzzle was $9 (goes for $17 at the Science eStore). A round hanging basket with a fiberous liner was $4 (at Home Depot they are $19), and a Hannah Montana electric guitar was $20 (a similar toy is $30 at Toy 'r Us).
Among the so-so deals: the iFish, which plays music on your MP3 player using built-in speakers was $20, just as much as it is on Amazon.com. A mocha fake suede chaise was $300 but it already had a few stains on it and it was so squishy I wonder if the pillows will wear out quickly.
In short, be especially careful about quality when you shop at Big Lots, but keep it in mind for certain items and ago in with a firm grip on your pocketbook (meaning don't fall into a spending free fall)!

Harbor Freight has a bunch of coupons on low-budget tools and household items. A roll of electrical tape is 39-cents (orig 69-cents), a 29-piece Titanium nitride coated drill bit set is $10 (orig $20), a pencil tire guage is 49-cents (orig $1.50). ANd that's just the tip of the iceberg. Even more printable coupons here. Note, these are printable coupons for in-store purchases. If you are big time into tools, I would suggest signing up for their email list on the homepage because they send coupons via email.

Magazines.com has a $5 off coupon for a short list of magazines that actually includes some good ones. No Montana Fly Fisherman here, folks. (With apologies to those who fly fish in the Big Sky state.) With the coupon get 10 issues of Women's Health for $10 or 10 issues of Everyday Food for $13. Runner's World, which I enjoy reading when I'm not running (so basically, all the time) is $15 for 12 issues. Discount also good on Time, The Economist and Reader's Digest, my childhood source of chilling shark attack tales. They always get bitten..but LIVE!
Use coupon code fall_5off. Coupon good through Nov. 15, 2007.
Staples is appreciating its customers (I mean, more than they usually do) this week, Oct 14 to 20, with a 12% off coupon good on most purchases. Good in-stores only, not online. Click here for the printable coupon. You may save more using this coupon than the free shipping coupon I blogged about Tuesday, which expires Oct 13, 2007.
Caveats: Excludes personal computers, laptops, phone cards, postage stamps, and a few other items.
American Baby Magazine is giving away free subscriptions. Fill out the form here for yours, courtesy of Parents.com. Parents mag is also giving away two year subscriptions for $9 plus $3 shipping and handling.
Target has a 10% off coupon that works on most purchases. I tried it on a purple wrap sweater, a Kitchen Aid mixer, and a Hello Kitty two-way radio. Use code TGTAFTXC. Doesn't look like it works in thes tore. Expires 12/31/2007. Wahoo!
OSH has some garden specials good thru Oct 20, 2007 that are worth stopping in if they fit your dirt needs. Their potting soil is $3, a dollar off from the normal price, for a cubic foot. A lighted tape measure is half off at $5 and a folding utility knife is $7 (orig $10). If the night chill is making you crave a fire, duraflame logs are $1.50 (orig $1.90) and 6-packs are $9 (orig $11). Their garden gloves are $4 for a three-pack (orig $4.50). Read the sales ad for the store nearest to you. Find OSH coupons on other stuff you might need here.

Normally you have to spend $50 to get free delivery at Staples. But until Oct 13, 2007 the office supply store is offering free shipping, no matter the size of your order. I just tried it with some ink toner and it worked. For online orders only.
Amazon.com is having a 48-hour kitchen sale that ends Oct 9, 2007. Click to see the sales in small appliances, cookware, tablewear, cutlery and tools, vacuums and cleaning stuff, or everything on sale. I like this polycarbonate salad dressing maker that has markers for the ingredients you need to add for various dressings. It's $4 (orig $10).
A lot of the items are eligible for free shipping if your tab is $25 or higher. If you need a few filler items to hit the $25 mark check out SlickDeals filler list.
Get 10% off appliances priced $297 and higher at Home Depot through Oct. 10. The fine print - curse the fine print! - says the discount is only good on "select" appliances. But you can look at the 1,825 appliances on sale here. before you head into a store. 10% is not a huge discount, but on the other hand how often do appliances go on sale? Ask if opening a HomeDepot line of credit will give you an extra discount. And remember not to be fooled into thinking that anything with a stainless steel outer is high quality. That look is so trendy that everybody uses it.
Caveats: Discount excludes taxes, warranty, delivery and installation fees. Markdown taken at register.
Home Depot also has a $5 mail-in rebate for Behr paint, which normally goes for about $20 to $25 a gallon. Ends Oct. 8.

You'll feel pretty smooth after using this coupon at Carter's. Until Oct 16, 2007 they are offering $10 off an in-store purchase of $50 or more, and $20 worth of stamps on your frequent shopper card (every $100 of stamps gets you $10 at the store), and an extra 50% off anything on "super-duper clearance." Surely you know someone about to pop or new parents who didn't realize babies go through, like, five outfits a day. Talk about needing a style consultant...

Aaron Brothers has a 25% off coupon for custom frame orders. I chose a frame and matte for an old sepia-toned picture of my father-in-law when he was about 5 at an Aaron Brothers last month and it looks great, but sometimes it's really hard to tell what brings out the best in a picture or piece of art. Expires Oct. 21. Locations near you.
Buy any bottle of wine and get a second one (the same bottle) for just 5 cents at BevMo. Online they list 195 bottles that are part of the sale (guess it doesn't apply to the entire store.) They give a description of the wine and it's rating on a scale of 1 to 100, plus any prizes it has won. Knowing that a lot of folks give bottles of wine as presents around the holiday, it's a great time to stock up. I'd get a dozen and whatever you don't give away you can drink yourself or save for a dinner party. The deal also seems to include some hard alcohol. I just added a second bottle of Skyy Vodka to my cart and the tab only went up by five-cents!
This Auguste Bessac Cotes du Rhone '06 is $13 and scored 89 points by their judge, Wilfred Wong. The blurb says: "A frisky red, the lively '06 Auguste Bessac Cotes-du-Rhone delivers a complete package; excellent ripe fruit on the palate and superb freshness in the aftertaste." Sounds like an adventure.
The Baroncini Chianti '06 is $14 and is described as a "picture-perfect Chianti; the straight-forward and focused '06 Baroncini Chianti simply drinks well; no more and no less, this wine is not fancy, just plain good." I like the sound of that!
If you want to spend a little more consider the Paoletti Cabernet '02 for $35. It scored 90 points and is "bright, firm, and full of ripe fruit flavors, this almost-in-your-face wine lasts long and smooth on the palate."
The El Portillo Malbec Rose '06 goes great with grilled pork chops, according to the description. It's $15.
The Grant Burge Chardonnay '04, $15, has my mouth watering. It is described as "a delicious Chardonnay from Australia; this white has a bright golden color, with aromas of fresh pineapples, and melon; on the palate, it is rich and medium bodied with notes of butterscotch."
You can also shop online and pick up your order in a store that you choose. Sale ends Oct. 29. Locations here.
The swanky Tower Hotel in Beverly Hills is liquidating all the furniture from their guest rooms, suites, lobby, pool, and restaurant. It is going out of business and will re-open next year as another hotel. (Their Web site is already defunct.) The sale starts Wed Oct 10 and goes thru Sun Oct 21. 10-6 each day. Visit them at 1224 S. Beverwil Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90035. Free and open to the public. For more info email the folks running the sale, Fort Pitt Furniture out of Chicago, at fortpitt@hotmail.com.
If you are new to the Tower, LA.com says it is a "stylish 12-story hotel overlooking Beverly Hills is a half-mile from Rodeo Drive, six miles from Hollywood, and seven miles from Venice Beach. LAX is 11 miles away. The hotel offers a walled garden with outdoor splash pool and cabanas, a fitness center, and a fusion restaurant; pets receive their own room-service menu, bed, and toys. The 137 guestrooms feature private, furnished balconies with city views, high-speed and television Internet access, VCRs, fax machines, and monogrammed bathrobes."
I love giving magazine subscriptions as gifts because it seems most people like getting magazines but they don't like buying them. Best Deal Magazines has a few offers worth looking into: 12 issues of Car & Driver for $4.69, 9 issues of Vegetarian for $3.69, and 45 issues of Golf Week for $4.69. On second thought, the Web site does look a little sketchy. When I called the 1-800 customer service number it didn't pick up for a few rings, then a recording told me that they only take customer service questions and comment via email. Red flag. When I went back to the CONTACTS page I reaad that emails from AOL, Roadrunner, Comcast or Cox accounts bounce back!?! Here is their explanation: **AOL, Roadrunner, Comcast or Cox may block responses from our customer service department. We do not know why this happens. Please use an alternate e-mail address to ensure that you receive a response to your customer service inquiry." Major sketchiness. I do not recommend patronizing this Web site. The prices are too good to be true, in my book. Instead, I suggest you try ValueMags.com. I ordered a magazine through this Web site without any problems.
UPDATE: A reader emailed me to say that she has multiple magazine subscriptions through Best Deal Magazines and not had any trouble.
Get your books and get 'em cheap at the Giant Used Book Sale at the Chatsworth Branch Library Sat Oct. 20. The sale is from 10 to 2. Hardbacks are $1 and paperbacks are 50-cents. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Chatsworth Library and proceeds go to purchase new books for the library and sponsor library programs, according to a publicity-minded Friend. The sale happens four times a year, but I believe this is the last one before the holidays. Would be a great place to pick up presents for the kids!
Visit them at 21052 Devonshire St., Chatsworth.
I don't get excited about vacuums. They do wonderful things in record time but for some reason we all hate them. However, I love a good deal and Woot has an excellent deal on a very fancy vacuum. The Dyson DC 15 is $290 plus $5 shipping. Wooters discuss the product here. The same vac goes for $500 to $600 at Bed Bath & Beyond and Amazon. Sears has it for $600.
The folks behind Woot are a bit wacky but their schtick is simple: every 24 hours starting at 12:01 a.m. they put a new item for sale. It's only available that day before they replace it with a new sale item. So ya gotta act quick. The clock is ticking.
As part of their 105th anniversary celebration, JC Penny is cutting $10 off on orders of $50 or more. If you spend $75 or more get $15 off, or $20 off purchases of $100 or more. Use code WP34BMSM online. Expires Oct 3.

Visit them at 7900 Haskell Ave, just north of Saticoy and a stone's throw west of the 405. in Van Nuys. (818) 728-1800. Hours Mon to Sat 10 to 6. Sun 11 to 5.
Chefs Corner has a 15% off coupon that's good thru Sept 30. Use coupon code CCAFFONLY, discount taken at checkout. The online store carries "everything needed to take a gourmet meal from the stove and put it onto the table," according to the Bargainist. Free shipping on orders over $99.
Restoration Hardware is having their fall lamp sale. More than 600 "luminaries" are marked down. I like the warm glow of the round shade chandelier for $300 (orig $400). Takes three 60-watt bulbs and measures 25.5 inches around and nearly 15 inches high. If I had a grand dining room I would buy the the traditional Trenton chandelier, below. It's $300 (orig $400). The shades are sold separately for $15 (orig $19).
There are many desk and floor lamps, though the ones in catagloe were all pretty bland. Guess it's up to you to spice it up with a colored/patterned shade. Lamp sale thru Oct 21. Also get 10% off regular priced items (so not the lamps) with code HFLSCEB7 thru Oct 1. Locations here. Or shop over the phone at 800-762-1005.
Kohl's has overstuffed pillows from The Big One for $5 (orig $10). Use coupon code NEW6369 to get an extra 10$ off. Shipping is $1. Thanks SlickDeals!
I'm finally getting around to sifting through the ads in the Sunday papers. Since it's at the end of the day, here's a quick and dirty round up of the best deals. Most prices are thru Sept 22.
Rite Aid seems to have the best candy prices. 8-packs of Butterfingers, Snickers, Hershey's and Reese's are 78-cents, and regular sized Hersey's, Skittles, and M&M's are two for 88-cents. In the cosmetics dept, the following have buy one get one 50% off deals: Hip cosmetics, Revlon tweezers, and Salley Hansen nail polish. Wet 'n Wild cosmetics are 40% off. The quality is not great, but perfect for trying out a new color or shade. As part of their 45th anniv sale they have deodorant (Old Spice, Aarid, and Arm & Hammer) for 99-cents, Ajaz dish soap for 88-cents, and laundry detergent (Xtra and Nice 'n Fluffy) for $2. COLLEGE STUDENT ALERT: A dozen packages of Top Ramen costs 96-cents. That's 8-cents each. It doesn't get much cheaper than that.
At Walgreens has two 64-ounce containers of cranberry or grape juice for $4, two packs of Ajaz dish soap for $1.79 (3 cents more than at Rite Aid), and three movie-size candy bars (Junior Mints, Raisinets, Hot Tamales, Dots, Snickers, Butterfinger, and Reese's) for $3. Also 16 packs of AA or AAA Duracel batteries are $9. Pantene Pro-V Texturize shampoo or conditioner are free after mail in rebate.
Michaels has 50% off all its floral items, five T-shirts for $10, and 99-cent bags of rocks (great for indoor plants or vases), marbles, and gems. Many frames and art supplies marked down, and 40% off wicker and natural baskets.
Aaron Brothers has a coupon for 40% off one item (except for digital photo frames and custom orders) thru Sept 23, plus lots of markdowns on frames, easels, and prepared canvas.
Ahhh. To have matched luggage and look composed even when you are frantically running for a plane. It doesn't get much better than that, does it? Okay I'll admit it, I'm being mean because I don't have matched luggage. I use an old school Puma bag that I got at a garage sale for $5. The zipper is starting to break and it smells a little (it doubles as my gym bag) but it's perfect for weekends and fits easily into overhead airplane compartments. So when I see sales like this it's hard to resist. Overstock has a US Traveler four-piece set for $105 (Orig $600). The set includes three upright wheelies with expandible depths: 21" h x 13.5" w x 7.5-9.5" d; 26" h x 18" w x 9-11" d; 30" h x 20" w x 10-12" d. The tote is 11" h x 15" w x 6" d.
It got a 4.6 out of 5 rating from 50 reviews. In chocolate with pink trim, navy with baby blue trim, and fiery red with orange trim. Me likes the chocolate.
Big Lots is having a big sale starting Sunday, Sept 16. Here are a few of the deals:
Four jars of Gerber baby food are $1, in regular or organic. Jars are 2.5 ounces and 4 ounces. Solar lawn lights are 50% off. Men's jean shorts are $5, but that's because they look like they are from 1992. See for yourself below.
Fleece throws are $3. A Coleman 18-volt Keyless drill is $22. Prices thru Sept. 22. Locations here.
The W Hotel store is having a warehouse sale, but prices are mixed. A distressed black classic baseball cap with Triple 5 Soul Logo in large is $15 (orig $35). A matte silver hammed cuff, below, is $100 (orig $198). The sheets seem to have the best prices. They are $36 to $290 and each piece is sold separately (flat, fitted, pillow cases). That adds up quick, but the brand does have a good reputation.
Going to toot my own horn here for a moment. I had a Sunday story in the Daily News and a few of our sister papers (like the San Gabe Tribune and Long Beach Press Telegram) about 9 things you should always buy on sale. Here's a link to read the full story, or a few of the tips below from "Learn never to pay full price again."
All in good time.
Nearly everything - even the iPhone - eventually goes on sale. But certain items go on sale so often that you should never pay full price.
The trick to making sales a staple of your shopping diet is patience, according to bargain hunters and marketplace masters.
"A little bit of delayed gratification can go a long way," said Helen Malani, a shopping expert at the West L.A.-based Shopzilla, a Web site that compares the price, rating and shipping fees of more than 30 million products from about 90,000 stores.
Buying early can help just as much as waiting around for a sale and buying late. As long as the item won't take up too much space or perish, why not purchase it on sale weeks or months before you use it?
My Grandma Jo did this every January. While the rest of us were wallowing in our Christmas loot, she headed to the stores to stock up on greeting cards. I used to roll my eyes when she proudly relayed how many dollars she saved on the Santa-splashed cards - 75 percent off, of course.
Now, I realize my grandma was one savvy spender. Continuing in that tradition, here are nine things you should always buy on sale.
Everything at Kampanat in Sherman Oaks is half off. The owner said he just did inventory and wants to clear out his stock. Literally, everything is half off except the world music CDs and no-slip furniture discs. Most of the furniture was dark, heavy wood with a few more delicate pieces. Prices below are AFTER the markdown. A solid wood bench was $200, a picture frame cut out of a tree ring was $15, wood masks were $42.50. Buddha statues were $150 and up, 2' x 2' wood carvings were $100. A small red lacquer cabinet painted with yellow poppies was $390. A pedestal mirror was $16, and a handsome but plain bed frame was $900. Matching side tables were $125.
Sale thru Sept. Visit them at 13335 Ventura Blvd. (818) 986-5432.

Williams and Sonoma has free technique classes every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. Here are the choices (drumroll): Braising, Knife Skills, Cupcakes, Pie Crust, Espresso, and Fresh Pasta. I could really use the pie crust class. No matter how many times my baker-mom tells me how to do it, they always fall apart.
Register by calling the store where you want to take the class. It is not hands on, but they show you how to do it while talking. Their regular cooking classes are $50. Find a store near you here.

Get a 10% off coupon for everything in OSH stores valid Sat, Sun, and Mon with a sticky coupon in today's local paper. Definitely time to re-start my herb garden after the last one was attached by bugs. Locations in Canoga Park, Granada Hills, Van Nuys, Burbank, Santa Clarita.
I was about to throw out my nasty, mold-covered shower curtain (I can't believe I let it go this long!) and pony up another $6 for a new one when I visited home. My Mom's shower curtain was pristine, but didn't smell all plasticky like the brand new ones do. I mentioned this and she shared her secret: she washes it in the washer machine with soap and bleach (no clothes). It works!
Thanks Mom.

This sale isn't until Oct 12-14, but it's not one to miss. Kristin Nelson, a Sherman Oaks mom, runs a huge consignment sale out of a 6,000 square foot warehouse in Van Nuys. Think a neatly organized garage sale on steriods. You will find "anything you would possibly need for a baby," she said. Clothes, toys, changing pads, exersaucers, bouncy seats...Pictures of past sales give you a good idea.
This year the LA Kids Consignment is at Seville Hall at 7963 Van Nuys Blvd. For more info, or to become a consigner, check out her Web site here. Kristin takes a 35% cut of sales, or 30% if you volunteer for 3 hours.

BargainsLA is salvating over the upcoming summer clearance sale at discounter The Outlet by ELS. It's worth missing work for, they say! But before you get your hopes up, remember this place is in Monrovia!

Sigh. The Monday morning blues. A tougher case than usual, but probably nothing that a hot cup of coffee can't fix. Here's the best of the Sunday newspaper ads:

A colleague told me Living Spaces, which claims to be California's largest furniture store, is coming to Panorama City. They offer same day delivery and is super cheap, she says, but their stuff isn't the highest quality. Well, my last name isn't Trump. Is yours?
Though I can't vouch for their furniture, the store knows their customer: women who drag hapless husbands and annoying children to pick out furniture only they truly care about. I'm guessing that's the reason why stores have a "theater-sized movie screen" that shows live sports events and a supervised "Kid's Fun Room" where kids can watch movies and play video games.
Or, us ladies could accept that we are the decision makers when it comes to furniture shopping (and a lot of other things) and leave hubby at home with the kids.
Current locations in Rancho Cucamonga and La Mirada.

Sherwin Williams has a big paint sale this Saturday only. 40% off paints and stains, 15% off duration home and exterior coating, 30% painting products and applicators. Locations in Simi Valley, Sepulveda, and Santa Clarita. (800) 474-3794.

I love reading Real Simple magazine, if only to dream of all the ways I can effortlessly and cheaply transform my home to look like the rooms in their pages. Of course, I never do any of it. (Does anybody? I'd really like to know.) This month may be different. On page 46 of Sept 2007's issue they have a two-step centerpiece that requires ingredients I actually have on hand.
You need: smallish vase, little rocks or pebbles, a straw, a flower.
1. Cut the straw so that it's an inch shorter than the vase. Hold it upright in the middle of the vase and fill the vase with rocks.
2. Stick the cut flower into the straw (which helps it stand straight). Fill halfway with water.
You can also do this with dirt or sand. Wonder if rice would work?

I hear the paperie Carmody & Co. is having a sale - 40% off most of their paper goods, invitations, pens, postcards, and accessories. Haven't been there myself but am told they carry brands like Anna Griffin, William Arthur, Checkerboard, and Boatman Geller. Sale ends Aug. 31.
Visit them at 121 E Union St, Pasadena. (626) 795-2924.

I'm new to Plummers and was amazed at the furniture prices in their weekend newspaper ad. A friend warned me about quality so I went to check out the Woodland Hills store for myself. I wasn't impressed with the dressers because the drawers seemed stiff or sticky on many. But the beds I would consider because the wood veneer is pretty convincing, especially on the medium-dark woods. A few of the headboards were a bit loose, like on the Sterling Park and Naia models, but it makes sense that they have some flexibility.
I really liked the accent pieces, especially the Zen counter and barstool for $200. The Symon Sideboard , above, adds fiery color for $188. The Luna Chair, below, is not a deal at $350, but it is surprisingly comfortable and stylish.

Locations in Woodland Hills, North Hollywood, Thousand Oaks, and Pasadena.

Linens -n- Things has a $10 airplane kit with jars and bottles for toiletries. I always have a hard time cramming mine in a baggie because I bought containers that are too big. This kit comes with a .5oz, 1oz & 2oz bottles they claim are leak proof, and 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 oz. jars, plus 36 labels and a 1 quart bag to carry it all in. With a 20% coupon its $8.

This is kind of a stretch but a really cool idea. MyArtStamps.com will make real postage stamps of your own design. Some folks are using it as school fundraisers, where the kids' art becomes the stamp. But it costs $25 for twenty 41-cent stamps, or $1.25 per stamp. That's a pretty stiff price, but if you could sell them for $2 each you'd make 75-cents per, or $15 bucks per sheet of 20 stamps.

How's this for a happy hour? Starting Friday at 6 p.m. (thru Saturday) Linens -n- Things is marking down stuff up to 75% off. Serta pillows are $5 (orig $10), Damask sheet sets are $10-$50 (orig $20 to $100), and show curtains and bath accessories are 25% off. Plus sales on cookware and other stuff.
Don't forget to stock up on their 20% off coupons before you go. They also take coupons from competitor Bed Bath & Beyond.
Locations in West Hills, Northridge, Sherman Oaks, Burbank, Camarrilo, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Clarita, Thousand Oaks, and Ventura.

I'm constantly finding coupons for cheap oil changes at Jiffy Lube and EZ Lube in the mail. (The one in my mail pile advertises a $19 oil change with all kinds of extras.) The major chains send them out frequently and they can be a great deal - if you can pull it off. A colleague advises:
An employee might say they don't recognize the deal, but insist that they do if it is a corporate coupon that has not expired. Once they accept the deal price, keep your tab low by not adding other services. They'll often push you to buy new wiper blades, a new air filter, or a transmission flush.
Stick to a basic oil change and before you leave the parking lot check that they have actually done that. Open the hood, pull out the dipstick, and look at the tip. Is the oil dark and...oily smelling? Or is it amber colored and...not as oily smelling? A while ago the chains got in trouble for not performing some services so it's important to check.
New oil will be lighter colored and not very smelly. If it they haven't done the work, time to get bossy (in a polite way).

Coupon clipping. Sounds fascinating, right? Zzzzzzz. But this fun tidbit on BargainsLA tells how one man became a rabid coupon clipper. Kevin O'Connor, aka the Coupon King, is the husband of savvy shopper Suzanne O'Connor, who runs the Web site. There's even a picture of a recipt showing he saved 57% on his bill. Just think of how many trips to Nordstrom Rack that would fund!
Kevin keeps motivated by comparing savings with friends and family, i.e. bragging rights are at stake! Hmm, suddenly my competitive side thinks I could get into this.

Until Saturday, Target is offering 15% off furniture purchases of $125 or more. Plus, get an extra $5 off online orders of $50 or more using code TC9EL63N at checkout.

Performance Bike is having a sale that will get your wheels spinning! All kinds of bike gear and equipment is marked down. Today is the last day they are offering free ground shipping and an extra 15% off on purchases of $75 or more (use code 6002377 when checking out).

No annual fee, 10% off your first purchase after signing up, and a 15% coupon with your first monthly statement. Plus, special sales like the VIP one Aug 22. Sounds like a fair deal if you can keep your spending in check.
And remember, OSH accepts plants you have killed (w/ receipt) for a FULL refund.
Locations in Canoga Park, Granada Hills, Van Nuys, Thousand Oaks, Burbank, and Santa Clarita.

I signed up for paperless billing a few months ago at So Cal Edison and got a $5 gift card to Starbucks in the mail this week. Sweet! Or rather, hot caffeinated goodness!
Go paperless here.
Just got the Crate & Barrel Best Buys catalogue in the mail and I'm not impressed with their sales. Most of the prices are not even marked down! Plus the folks at C&B decided not to show original prices. They just print them in red, as if that means they are lower! Grrrr. If prices were really that low, they wouldn't mind sharing the before and after cost.
You'll have better luck shopping C&B Outlet. Unfortunately, the only CA locations are in Carlsbad, Carbazon and Berkeley.
Saw 100% silk Hayward Pillows for $14 (orig $29), bamboo cutting boards which I love using for $18 to $29 (orig $35 to $45), and this wood-slat magazine rack for $25 (orig $43).

If you haven't heard about eBates.com, it sounds like a total scam at first. You sign up at eBates (email required), then link to more than 800 retailers through their site. By linking through eBates you get a percentage rebate on each purchase, which varies by store. eBates tracks your purchases and every 3 months cuts you a check.
I tested it by purchasing a subscription to Runner's World (incidentally, a mag I really like) on ValueMags.com thru eBates. I bought the mag Aug 2 and today got an email saying eBates had credited my account with $5 (a 25% savings on the going mag rate of $20). The week delay was a little longer than I would have liked, but I also got a $5 bonus from eBates for my first purchase as a new client.

Until Sept 30, Sears is waiving the $15 session fee and has these photo deals:
In black and white get 1 5x7 and 4 wallets of the same pose when you buy a $15 portrait. Code 50847 but you need to print out the coupon.
There's also a deal on $3 portrait sheets when you buy 6 at the $8 each price. Get pics of the kids before all the blubber is gone!

When the memory of relatives doing the chicken dance fades, when the top tier of your wedding cake is safely stashed in its frozen coffin, and when all three of your new toasters have been unwrapped, it's time to think about the unthinkable. Buying more stuff.
You probably have everything you need and more than you wanted to start your new married life, but remember that many department stores offer 10% of any un-purchased items left on your wedding registry. Macy's gives you a year to take advantage of the sale. Bloomingdales gives 6 months. Crate and Barrel gives you 6 months but requires you to do it all at once.
Maybe you really DO need that 11th and 12th dinner plate setting...

The Company Store, which mysteriously started sending me catalogues last month, is having a decent sale on quilts, sheets, and some household furniture. While I cannot fully vouch for their quality because I have not bought anything from them, a few deals are worth looking into:
They have about a dozen quilts between $51 and $95 (orig $129 to $159). I also liked the Hallway Bench, in black or white, with hooks to hang coats, two shelves to hide stuff, and of course, a bench. Could be a great organizer of stuff that always lands on the floor at my house. $124 (orig $249), plus $50 shipping. Caveat: get out your wrench because ya gotta assemble it yourself! UPDATE: Can't find it online, and a sales rep said it sold out. Darn, I knew it was too good to be true!

The kids pop-up hampers $8 (orig $24) are fun and come as a pink fairy, a yellow duck or a green frog. Ribit!
Order over the phone at 800-285-3696.

A San Deigo friend who is a *very* savvy shopper reminded me of Bed Bath & Beyond's liberal coupon policy. They accept their 20% coupons even AFTER they have expired and they accept coupons from rival Linen -n- Things. Plus, the 5 coupon limit per purchase does not seem to be in effect anymore.
So basically, you should never buy ANYTHING full price from that store. If you don't have tons of those big blue 20% coupons floating around your house, you can sign up for them here. The caveat is you can't use them online and they take 6-8 weeks to start coming. If you need a quick fix, check the inserts in your local newspaper.

Macys has a good deal on a 13-piece starter knife set. It's the Henckels high-quality brand, but for $40 (orig $75) you know you're not getting the top of the line knives. Still, they claim they never need sharpening and are dishwasher safe. Includes a 3" parer, 6" utility, 5" boning, 8" bread, 8" Chef's, 8" Carver, six steak knives and storage block.
Caveat: Price goes up to $60 starting Thur Aug. 9.
Linen 'n' Things has an air bed for 50%. Not sure if their AeroSport brand is related to the high-quality AeroBed. The twin bed that blows up in a minute (it's true, I've done it) is $50 (orig $100). Self-inflating, comes with backpack to stash the bed in.
LNT also has a really good price on a microwave that I paid at least $50 for at Target. The basic Emerson Microwave is $40 after a $20 mail-in rebate. It's not huge, but big enough to fit in full size plates and some dishes.
Don't forget that LNT sends out copious amounts of 20% coupons in their circulars. That brings the price of the bed down to $40, and the microwave down to $24!!

A friend says she just bought a 250 thread count Eygptian cotton bedding queen set (fitted and flat sheet and 2 pillowcases) for $34.50 at Cost Plus World Market! A small selection of bedding, duvets, towels, and shams in ivory or white were 50% at the store. All Egyptian cotton.
Locations in Sherman Oaks, Westlake Village, Northridge, Woodland Hills, and Glendale.

JCPenney's has a very low price for a 106-piece pot and pan set. The quality can't be great for the price, and most of the set is plastic utensils, tupperware, or kitchen tools. But it's $60 (orig $150), making it ideal for someone who will cook at college or is moving into their first apartment. The set includes:
3 pots with lids and one 9-inch frying pan.
A roaster pan, cookie sheet, and pizza pan.
Plastics: soup ladle, turner, pasta server, spoon, skimmer, slotted spoon.
Knife block set (chef's, utility, bread, paring, boning, set of six steak knives, sharpener, wood block)
10-pc. measuring set
Gadgets: pizza cutter, can opener, grater, peeler, bottle opener.
Four each: spoons, forks, knives.
One large and one small clip.
A cutting board.
Random other stuff: 6 cookie cutters, salt and pepper set, 2 ice cube trays, 8 tupperware containers with lids, a juicer, spout cover, detachable lid, seal lid, removable lid arm, slicing blade, six blade holder with stainless steel insertable blade, egg white separator, egg white beater, food bowl, pitcher with lid, tray, 5 cups.

Saw a good deal for a 10.75 inch rectangular pan that's good for making lasagna. I use a glass pan, but it's never deep enough. This one at SmartBargains comes in blue or green for $30 (orig $50). It's made of stonewear and can go in the dishwasher, so unless you drop it the thing will last forever.
Could also be a great housewarming or wedding present. As they say, buy ahead of need to get the best price!
Shipping is $2.95.

Radio Shack has a good price on a basic starter tool kit. For $10 you get 76-pieces, including a 10' Tape Measure,
hammer, Bit driver handle, 16 SAE and metric hex key wrenches, 2 Hex key holders, a 3/8" drive ratchet, a 3/8 to ¼" drive adaptor, 20 - 1" power bits, 2 Bit holders, 6" adjustable wrench, a 6" long nose pliers, 6 SAE and metric 3/8" drive sockets, and 22 SAE and metric ¼" drive sockets.

Until Aug 4, Staples offers 12% off using this printable coupon. Just in time for back to school!

Saw a massive 20% to 50% sign across the storefront of Wheel World on Ventura in Woodland Hills, east of Fallbrook. Many of their bikes are on sale, and they have a "continuous" rack of marked down clothes, an employee said.
Location also in Culver City.

Linens-n-Things has a bunch of "back to college" sales, including an 11-piece pizza kit for $15. With one of their 20% coupons, which you can find in every nook and cranny of my house, it's just $11. (I hear LNT and BBB accept each others coupons). The set includes a pizza stone, cutter, server, two oven mitts, two filled spice containers, a sauce scooper, and three cheese-grating thingies.
I make pizza all the time at home and it's a cinch. Get dough from Trader Joe's for $1 and let it warm up a little before you smush it and toss it into a rough circle. (I set the oven to 400 and let it warm up on that.) Lay the dough on the stone, which hopefully you have sprinkled with about a tablespoon of corn meal. Otherwise, this sucker may not come off the stone. Spread a *little* red sauce on top, more than 3 tablespoon will make it really gooey - in a bad way. Then put on your preferred toppings (mine are garlic, peppers, and pepperoni), then put on thin slices of mozzarella. With the cheese on top everything gets bubbly. Cook for 15 minutes. Start to finish is no more than 30 minutes, unless you are a real klutz in the kitchen, in which case it'll take 45.

Osh has some great sales now as part of their Dollar Days sale, which lasts thru Aug 1. Bet a lot of this stuff will set out, though.
Get a 4 foot bamboo tiki torch for $1. You know you could spend a LOT more on these at Smith and Hawken or Crate and Barrel.
Thirty foot rope is $2. Plastic 18 gallon containers with lids are $5 (I've seen much higher at Staples). Gardeners can replenish or add to their herb gardens, three for $7 (for the 4 inch plants).
Locations in Canoga Park, Van Nuys, Thousand Oaks, Granada Hills, Burbank, and Santa Clarita.

Starting tomorrow thru July 21, Big Lots is marking down all their grills and accessories by 25%. Yum, just in time for a weekend BBQ.
Also get an extra 30% off clearance patio, lawn and garden stuff.
Locations in Canoga Park, Reseda, Van Nuys, Granada Hills, Simi Valley, Pacoima, North Hollywood, Sylmar, and Santa Clarita.

For discounted designer love seats, rugs, lamps, and more, head to The Dock Downtown . They claim their designer overstock pieces are 40% to 80% off, and they do custom orders. Free delivery until Aug 5.
The web site doesn't have specific info on the stock in their 20,000 sq foot warehouse, but instead has pictures of hypothetical settings and arrangements. So thaaaaaat's helpful.
Tue thru Sat 10-6. Sun 11 to 5. I'm told the return policy is non-existent, but check to confirm.

If you're still looking for a few plants for your garden, OSH has a very generous return policy. With the receipt you can bring back dead plants for a full refund. I felt a little guilty the one time I did return two brown plants, but the checker wasn't fazed. They even had a stack of plastic bags to dump the plants into!
I personally prefer Green Thumb on Sherman Way (better selection, quality, and if you can track down a salesperson they are very knowledgeable), but they close at 6 p.m.

OSH has locations in Canoga Park, Granada Hills, Van Nuys, Thousand Oaks, Burbank, and Santa Clarita.

My hubby goes gaga for tools, but when he returns from Home Depot dare I check the recipt?? Just like Costco, it's too easy to spend $100-plus.
My co-worker Roger suggested Harbor Freight Tools for lower prices. He recommends basic items like hammers at HF. They have stores in Woodland Hills, Simi Valley, and Ventura.
