How to save money on your gym membership

Cancel it, that's how. Then get outside this summer for your workout! This long weekend is the perfect time for getting the ultimate in free workouts. Just put on some shoes and run around for an hour. For free!

Don't have that kind of motivation? Then adopt a dog from the East Valley Animal Shelter this weekend. The economic downturn means there's lots of Fidos and Fluffys being dropped off (per this Daily News article.) Believe me, it's the ultimate motivation. And talk about a bargain. It's less than $100 to get the animal with shots, license, microchip.

I haven't used my membership for the Woodland Hills Gold's membership since I adopted Bella, my energetic yellow lab in September and Beastie, my even more energetic Newfoundland/border collie in November when he was still a pup -- a BIG pup. Now my workout is all about tiring out the doggies so they don't destroy the house when I'm gone. That gets me out of bed like not even my muffin top can. I run with them an hour on weekday mornings around the neighborhood (early, to avoid the heat) and then hike with them on the weekends. (I like the Angeles National forest trails via Tujunga or Alta Dena, and the Verdugo Mountains in Burbank/Glendale. Lots of excellent trails where dogs are allowed, and not too many people.) I've saved money and got in good shape. It's all good.

And now I have extra money to spend on outdoor gear, yay! See how it's all related? And there's few things better than perusing through the REI outlet online. So many great deals! And you can avoid shipping fees by ordering your stuff and having it sent to the Northridge REI on Devonshire (in that mall at Reseda with the Albertsons) for free pickup Sporty Beastie.JPG_ or the Santa Monica one, if you're on that side of the hills. They e-mail when it's ready. I got a mondo sized dog backpack for big Beastie for only 29.99 (that's him at right in his old, puny sized backpack). Now he's my Beast of burden on the trail. Water please, Mr. Beast!

quasar top.jpgSo many great deals from the site. Like this cute fitness top that's half off. I like it in quasar, whatever that is. Or these Wright socks for $3.93. I looove me some Wrightsocks and highly recommend them for any runner. I will only run in these socks. They are double layered to keep the blisters away. It works.

If REI isn't your thing and want to get all reusable (it's green!), check out Play it Again Sports, the store for reused sports gear. There's one right down Reseda at Nordhoff in that mall on the northwest corner of that intersection, with the McDonalds.

Tennis shoes getting $$$

RunningShoes.jpgPhidippides in Encino, my favorite place to get running shoes, warns me that the price of sneakers is about to skyrocket by 12 to 20%. Buy now and stash that extra pair in your closet until they are needed!

The e-newsletter said price are increasing in China, where the vast majority of shoes sold in the U.S. are made. "The cost of doing business in China has skyrocketed - labor laws and environmental laws and enforcement have changed; the dollar has fallen against nearly every currency in the world (wait 'til petroleum is tied to, say, the Euro instead of the dollar!!). Add in the cost of petroleum (the raw material for EVERY part in your running shoes), and the impact that oil prices have on the cost of transportation of raw materials and finished goods and you can see why these price increases are inevitable."

Generally you want to replace your running shoes every 6 months or every 250-300 miles. If you only walk in them it probably does not matter as much.

Visit them at 16545 Ventura Blvd. in Encino. (818) 986-8686. Closed Mon. Tue, Thur and Fri 10-6, Sat 10-5. Wed 10-8. Closed Sundays except for the 1st Sun of each month, when they are open 12-4.

REI used gear sale

Camping.jpgHands down, the best place to get camping gear, outdoorsy clothes, and backpacks is the REI used gear sale, which is this Saturday. At their last sale I snagged a three-season sleeping bag for $60 that normally runs about $115 to $150.

The gear is marked down by 50% to 90% because it has been returned under REI generous return policy and cannot be resold under normal circumstances. My sleeping bag looked brand spankin' new, but a Keen bag I picked up was a little dusty and had a small tear in one of the pockets.

The catch is the sale is only open to members. Back when I joined it was $10, now the one time fee is $20. Join here. Expect a line to start forming outside the Northridge store a few hours before doors open at 10 am. (This ain't no Playstation sale but crunchy folks like a deal, too.)

Line up at 18605 Devonshire St. in Northridge. (818) 831-5555. Call your local REI to see if the sale is happening near you. Dates and times vary by store. I know the Santa Monica REI sale starts at 7am Saturday.

Perks of Yoga

MenDoingYoga.jpgForget Good Vibrations. A new study says yoga can help men perform in bed. All that slow breathing and pelvis strength that yoga builds, apparently. Here's the low down from a blog called That's Fit: "According to a study out of India, and published in a recent issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, men who practiced yoga on a regular basis had less instances of premature ejaculation. Following a group of men, all of whom admitted to regularly having premature ejaculations during intercourse, researchers found that practicing an hour of yoga each day for 12 weeks helped them triple the time they normally lasted in bed."

I guess I'll be seeing a lot more men doing downward dog in yoga. Here's a listing of yoga classes all across LA.

Listening for frogs

FroginMud.jpgI often drive home through Topanga Canyon and there is one spot just before the PCH where I always hear a healthy chorus of ribits. So when I decided to attempt commuting home on my bike I looked forward to passing that spot. Hearing frogs splash around in mud always puts a smile on my face. Who knew?

Once I started pedaling I remembered how my legs burn on the bike, which made me think of how my lungs burn when I swim, and how my hip burns when I run. I take this to mean I'm on fire, baby!

I'm putting myself through fire for a good cause. My goal is to raise $5,000 for cancer research while benefiting from the free coaching that is part of Team in Training, a fundraising program run by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event I'm training for is the Wildflower Olympic triathlon. On May 4 I plan to swim .92 miles, bike 25 miles, and run 6.2 miles.

So far it's going really well. I've raised more than $2,500 from about 30 donors and am doing crazy things like riding my bike home from work, a 22 mile commute. No frogs cheered me on as I passed (I think it was too early in the day) but I did get my speedometer up to 37.7 mph on the steepest, curviest part of the Canyon. Don't worry Mom, I probably won't do that again.

Pushing my limits

a.jpgUPDATE: Link below fixed.

Have you ever done anything that really pushed your limits? Pushed your physical ability, your emotional strength and your mental stamina beyond the brink? Past what you think you could do - past what you convinced yourself you were capable of for a few moments at a time before reality returned.

Well folks, I have signed on for just that sort of challenge. I decided I wanted to reach for the stars, get off my butt, and see what this sack of bones, muscle and water could accomplish. On May 4 I am competing in an Olympic Triathlon, which is a .9 mile swim, unfortunately followed by a 25 mile bike, even more unfortunately followed by a 6.2 mile run.

I signed up for the Wildflower triathlon, renown around the world for being an extremely difficult course. Hey, I figured, I'm semi-athletic and my pain tolerance is decent. It didn't sink in what I had gotten myself into until I told the hardest core runner/triathlete I know about my little 32-mile adventure.

"So I'm doing an olympic triathlon," I told him recently.
"Which one?" he said.
"Wildflower."
"YOU'RE doing Wildflower?"
"Uh, yeah."
"Oh." Then he paused. "Wildflower is challenging."

Not hard. Not difficult. But challenging. Words coming from a guy who does 50 mile races for fun. Who, when his knee starts hurting, turns around and runs home...six miles. Challenging is not a word I like coming from this man. Oh no. It means the course is excruciating, that when I cross the finish line - if I make it - the pain will be so bad I'll be on the verge of tears. That afterwards I'll be sore in places I didn't know I had muscles.

Right then and there I really wished I hadn't signed up for the Wildflower tri. But a promise is a promise, and I promised to raise money for cancer research while benefiting from the free coaching that is part of Team in Training, a fundraising program run by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Who knows, maybe in 11 weeks I'll be able to call myself an olympic triathlete. If not, at least you know why I'm fascinated with sporting gear.

Ski sale

Skier3.jpgWith many many weeks left in the ski season I thought this sale would interest a few eyeballs. Bargainsla.com reports H&H Jobbers is closing their West LA location with markdowns up to 70% off. "Men’s and women’s outerwear ski jackets (priced) at $39-$45, retail would be $300 plus! $9 gloves are regularly $39, $49 snow board boots would go for $100-$180."

A store employee said they are closing the store because of lack of parking. The store already has low prices because it is a ski and surf outlet, but for the closing sale they have a "below cost" section with men's and women's jackets.

The last day for the West LA store is March 27. Read more about the sale. Directions and a map to the West LA store is listed third here.

Visit them at 10867 Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. Hours are Tue to Sat 11 to 6 and Sun and Mon 11 to 5. (310) 475-5701.

Running store discounts

Runner.jpgFinally had time to drop in at Road Runner Sports, a newish store in the Fallbrook Mall in West Hills. Two cool things about the store: the running gear and two treadmills that measure your gait to help you find a suitable pair of running sneaks.

Most of the gear in the store - clothes, sneakers, sports bras, and socks - is full price. But the clearance rack had plenty to offer and they are nice enough to place it at the front of the store instead of burying it in the back. I found a pair of running shorts for $10, a Mizuno long sleeve top in blue/turquoise or plum/pink for $40 (orig $65), each with a zip pocket at the small of the back for your house keys and ID. I couldn't resist the softness of a pair of black fleece pants for $25 (orig $40), so much cozier than my polyester sweats.

On the regular racks a baby blue Illuminate reflective jacket for running in the dark was $60 (orig $81) and also had the back zipper pocket. Grey or black T-shirts that say I (heart) running were $18. Not a great deal, but cute.

Having an employee check your gait and recommend shoes is free, though I imagine they expect you will buy one of the pairs they recommend. The selection of sneaks was decent and prices ranged from $85 to $115. Visit them at 6745 Fallbrook Ave in the northwest corner of the mall by Trader Joe's.

I also like buying running shoes at Phidippides in Encino. All the employees are runners and they have great selection. You can run in the shoes before you buy them. They also accept returns of clean shoes if you decide after running in them *once* that they are not for you.

Eastbay pick your price sale

TrackJacket.jpgThis Eastbay sale is not quite as good as it sounds - you can't name a price for your favorite pair of snazzy sneaks. But you can search by price for tons of shoes, gear, and clothes at Eastbay.com. All these cleats and tennis shoes are $30. A selection of T-shirts, caps, and shorts are $10. These sneaks are $70 with many original prices of $100+. In most categories it seems the women's selection is noticeably smaller than the men's. Humph.

I like this white and fuscia women's track jacket for $30 (orig $59). Once you choose the price you can narrow the search by gender, sport or brand using tabs on the left.

What I did last night...

Actually, what I did last weekend: played in LeiOut 2008, the three-day Santa Monica beach Ultimate Frisbee tournament (hence my absense Monday). Here are action shots of me laying out for the disc. It's definitely as fun as it looks!

Best sport on earth

UltimateLeiOutGrass.jpgI'm taking Monday off - Martin Luther King Day - to play the greatest sport on earth. Not baseball, not football, not foosball. Ultimate Frisbee. It's the last day of a three-day tournament where dozens of teams from around the country play Ultimate in the sand just north of the Santa Monica pier. I'm going to swallow a few Ibuprohen horse pills for my ailing hip and cross my fingers.

The beach version of Ultimate Frisbee is simple (and does not involve dogs): co-ed teams play five on five on a field that resembles a football field with an endzone at either end. A team gets one point when one of their players catches the disc in the endzone. Games are usually played to 15, but that can vary. Players can throw the disc anywhere within bounds but have to stop moving when they catch the disc. It's a fast, non-contact sport that is great fun on the beach because laying out (when you dive in the air to catch the Frisbee) does not hurt much in the sand. At least, not nearly as much as it does on grass, like in the picture.

I'll try to post Monday morning, but no daily digest that day. Be back bright and early Tuesday.

Not sure if code is case sensitive and it's unclear how long it is good.

A "backless" bra with light support and clear plastic straps goes for $26. I like this wicking skort for $46, in pink, black and white that would be good for lots of sports. A wrap mesh skirt to slip on over a swim suit is $40 and comes in hot pink, aqua blue, and black.

REI used gear sale

UPDATE: Don't forget about the REI used gear sale this Saturday. The sale at the REI Northridge starts at 10am. The one in Santa Monica starts at 7 am Saturday and ends at 9:30 a.m. The Manhattan Beach store sale starts at 9 a.m.

PREVIOUSLY: REIGearSale.jpg Can your loved one take a rain check? The REI in Northridge is having a members-only used gear sale Dec 29 with prices on gear, apparel and equipment 50% to 90% off. I have not been to one of these sales but have heard from sporty friends that there are amazing deals on stuff used once or twice then returned under REI's generous return policy. The store can't resell the gear even though it is practically new. Remember, you have to be a member to get into the sale (lifetime membership costs $15). I may go look for a sleeping bag. Items won't last so do your homework ahead of time to narrow down exactly what you are looking for.

Addidas year end sale

AddidasSlide.jpg Get up to 40% off at Addidas stores and online. Check out the men's sale, the women's sale, and kids sale stuff. These iconic slide sandals are $14 (orig $20). I'm thinking selection is much better online than in stores, but check here for stores near you.

Ladies gym $39/mo

fitness.jpg Teresa at Total Woman Spa is having another gym membership sale. It's $39 a month and you pay first and last month's upfront (so $78 to start). Payments from then on are automatically withdrawal. There's no enrollment fee if you sign up in the month of December, which I'm guessing is a really slow month for them. The membership lets you go to all their clubs but you must sign up with Teresa in Warner Center to get the deal. Call her at (818) 710-7606. Caveats: ladies only!

REI $20 off

WeekendBag.jpg Get $20 off your purchase of $100 or more at REI and the REI Outlet until Dec 24, 2007. Very few exclusions! Use code HOLIDAY7 online, print the above link to get the discount in stores, or mention HOLIDAY 7 when ordering over the phone (1-800-426-4840). Search their gadgets, green gifts, gifts over $100, stocking stuffers, or their top sellers. Search all items here. I like this twill weekend bag for $50 (orig $70), a good-looking replacement for my rapidly aging gym/weekend bag.

Caveats: excludes special orders, prior purchases, REI gift cards or E-gift certificates, gift boxes, memberships, shop services, and rentals.

The sale is also in stores, but like the name implies, they are all on the East Coast.

Cheap gym membership ends Wed!

TotalWomanSpa.jpg Total Woman Gym and Atmosphere Day Spa is having a membership sale at their Woodland Hills location that ends tomorrow! There are three deals for the women-only gym, which also include access to classes, a dry sauna, steam room and whirlpool. Here is a flyer about it.

1. Basic Gym Membership: $29 monthly/No Enrollment fee.
2. Express Spa Membership:$89 monthly/No Enrollment fee, plus 1 full session swedish massage or european facial a month.
3. Spa Membership: $129 monthly/No Enrollment fee, plus 2 full sessions of a swedish massage &/or european facial a month.

Here's the tricky part. To get the deal you must stop by the Woodland Hills location in the Promenade mall between 5 and 7 p.m. Wednesday OR leave a voicemail for Teresa by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov 28. Her phone number is (818) 251-0719 or (818) 710-7606--at this number you MUST ask for Teresa. Leave your name, two phone numbers where she can reach you, and which membership deal you are interested in. She has to process all the paperwork by Wed so if you do not hear from her by Wed you should call her back. You can also email her at tfasano@totalwomanspa.com. All memberships are month to month with 30-days notice to cancel. You pay first and last month upfront and automatic payment by debit/credit card is required.

To get to the gym: (6100 Topanga Canyon, enter off Owensmouth by the men's Macys or Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, no entrance from inside mall)

See Jane Run 20% off

WalkingShoes.jpg Until Dec 24, 2007 you can get 20% off regular priced items at the women's sportswear store See Jane Run. They don't have shops in LA, but they do have a good Web site. Use code HL07. Free shipping on orders $100 plus. I like these gray walkers by Privo for $80, also in brown or black. They look easy to get into and have laces you don't have to tie! Too bad I just bought a pair of walking shoes at the REI sale. This emerald-colored down vest by Patagonia is $145. Prices before discount.

Caveats: discount not good on sale merchandise.

Running shoe sale

AddidasMensShoe.jpg Road Runner Sports is having a big sale on running shoes and apparrel. These men's Addidas Supernova Control 9 sneaks are $70 (orig $90). Don't fall for the VIP prices, though. You have to pay $40 to join the VIP club, so unless you buy an awful lot of tennies it probably does not make sense. Plenty of women's apparel and running shoes on sale too. Sale ends Oct 29, 2007.

October 24, 2007

Lady Footlocker Sale

LadyFootLockerShoe.jpg Starting today thru the weekend all Lady Footlocker stores are having a big 2 for $79 shoe sale. Run for your money

Running-shoes.jpg A new study says high-priced running shoes aren't really worth it because they don't protect your feet more than less-expensive pairs, according to story in HealthDay. The best way to get a top notch shoe it focus on what fits your foot best. The story goes: "Using high-tech methods, a team of Scottish scientists found no differences in either comfort or shock absorption between $80 pairs of running shoes and pairs made by the same companies costing more than $150.

"My advice to runners is to make sure that, first, the footwear fits your feet, and that if you are paying more, that doesn't mean that you're getting something better," said lead researcher Rami Abboud, director of the Institute of Motion Analysis and Research at the University of Dundee.

Of course, shock absorption and comfort are not the only factors. You've got to consider arch support, size of the toe box, and for super focused runners, weight. When I need a good shoe I go to Phidippidies in Encino, which is about $10 more a pair than most other stores. But you get a trained salesperson who looks at your foot, asks you how much you run, and then recommends a few pairs. You can run on them in the parking lot to test them out and they have a decent return policy.

Visit them at 16545 Ventura Blvd in Encino. (818) 986-8686.

Big sporty gear sale

Keenboatshoe.jpg Eastern Mountain Sports has no stores within a thousand miles of Southern California, but their sale is still accessible because it is also on their Web site. Gear is up to 20% off now thru Oct. 21. If you spend $100, get a $25 gift card good in their store. I like this 3-season sleeping bag that keeps you toasty to 25-degrees for $87 (orig $109). Long size is a few bucks more. These Keen boatshoes also caught my eye (not like you have to be on a boat to wear them). They look super comfy, are made of stretchy neoprene, and are $20 (orig $35)! Ah, herein lies the rub: size 5 only, in green. Doh!

Also check out their pedometers and running watches, their Keen footware, North Face men's gear and women's gear.

Buy online or over the phone at 888-463-6367. Hours are extended during the sale, from 7 am to 12 midnight Oct 18 to 20, and from 7 am to 3 am Oct 21. Read their generous return policy here (basically you can return anything you are "unsatisfied" with.)

Sales caveats: Excludes Merrell, Patagonia, UGG footwear, ski boots or Icelantic® skis, repurchase of returned merchandise, product rentals, or gift cards. Caveats on the $25 gift card: gotta use it Oct. 22 thru Nov 8, 2007 and spend $50 or more.

Best bets for Bruins gear

MiniUCLAHelmet.jpg Having a hard time finding UCLA gear on sale? Tell me about it. Crazy fans buy so much of this stuff the prices are up there! But you don't have to pay full price. After a web search I found at least one place that has gear at relatively reasonable prices.

At the UCLA store prices were top notch, but that's not a good thing when you want a deal. T-shirts were $16 to $22, sweatshirts were $41 to $61, sweats were $32 to $45, and hats were $15 to $22.

At ColleageGear.com, the apparel selection was basically limited to 2007 Final Four stuff. A sweatshirt was $46, a T-shirt was $26, and a hat was $27. Not exactly jaw-dropping prices. A tease for a $36 sweatshirt turned out to be just that. UCLAHoodie.jpg
They do have a basic UCLA sweatshirt in baby blue for $30 (gray is currently sold out). Two UCLA T-s, one blue and the other gray, for $15 each.

eBruin has the best prices I've seen so far. Their sweatshirts are $25 to $45 with a good variety of colors and styles. Most are hooded, though. This dark navy non-hood sweatshirt is $35 and comes in L, XL, or XXL. See all their Bruin sale gear here.

Hometeams has a sale on stuff like license plate borders, mugs, and wastebaskets, all marked with UCLA. Let me know if I've overlooked your fave place to get cheap UCLA gear. And thanks!

Horsing around

HorsingAround.jpg The PetSmart in Valencia is clearing out all its equine gear, a reader tells me. The sale goes until Oct 15 but most of the stuff is already gone, an employee said when I called. They still have a few reins left, pants, T-shirts, a cap, and "maybe one pair of shoes." Everything is 50% off. No wonder everything is galloping out of the store! If you are looking for something specific best to call ahead and see if they have it.

Visit them at 24965 Pico Canyon Rd., Stevenson's Ranch. (661) 260-3990.

Ship free at Wheel World

MountainBiker.jpg The bike store Wheel World is offering free shipping for the next three days, thru Oct 11, 2007. See all their specials here.

Locations in Woodland Hills and Culver City.

See Jane. See Jane Save Moolah.

Chacos.jpg See Jane Run, an athletic store for those of us with two chromosones (I'm done with the "fairer sex" moniker, I sweated buckets last night in yoga) has a coupon for $20 off a purchase of $50 or more (can't be sale items). Their clothes, shoes, and gear are full-priced, but high quality and this is a good coupon. I don't go far without my Chacos sandals so I recommend this pair in fiery orange and red for $50. Also in black, sizes 6 to 11 but not half sizes, it appears. JaneTote.jpg What's up with that? Print this coupon for in-store shopping, or use code 20bucks during the online checkout. I also like this nylon cargo tote that is useful for beach trips, the farmer's market, everyday lugging, and more. Five different colors, in small or medium.

RockClimber.jpg REI stores have free classes on outdoorsy topics likes camping and bike maintence. At the Northridge store there is one Wed Sept 26 on desert camping. Their pitch: "Do you think the desert is just a wasteland? Think again! Southern California is filled with desert destinations that have amazing vistas, unique ecologies and native wildlife viewing opportunities..." Never occured to me that I needed to take a class for desert camping but this doesn't sound so bad. There are also intro classes on rock climbing and GPS, a Stoney Point clean-up day, and bike matintenence. For all the details go here. To find an REI class near you look for a local store here.

Got my yoga fix at Inner Power Yoga in Calabasas yesterday and found a great coupon there. A buy one get one free at Smoothie King at the other end of the strip mall. Also a $1 off any smoothie. Now it's kind of tacky to just walk in and grab a coupon and go, but it's up to you. (They are on a bench to your right when you walk in.) Venus Williams clothing line

venuswilliams.jpg
Tennis star Venus Williams is getting her own line of clothing, EleVen. The on and off the court styles will be sold through Steve & Barry's which also launched Sarah Jessica Parker's line, Bitten. Williams' line hits the stores in November, but she'll be wearing them at the US Open starting Aug 27. I know Venus is a rock star on the court, but can she make my thighs look like her well-oiled missles?

Running...beats a gym membership

dirty_shoes.jpg

I used to belong to a gym when I lived on the East Coast. Made sense cause there's a few months of the year when you just do NOT want to be outside. But here in sunny cali, I don't see the need. I started running to keep in shape so I can play Ultimate Frisbee, but now I'm kinda into running on its own. Problem is, when I'm not running I wish I was, and when I'm pounding the pavement, nothing seems more appealing than walking.

I try, and I try, and I try, and I try.
I can't get no...duh nuh nuh.
I can't get no!

(You can't beat the free workout, though.)

Chick's Sale at Promenade

ChicksLogo.jpg

Chick's Sporting Goods Tent Sale is coming up! Aug 10-19th at the Promenade mall. I stopped by to take advantage of their end-of-the-summer sales already in effect: rash guard shirts (no need for suncreen) for men, women and kids were all $20, women's swim suits were half off at about $21-24 per piece, and I got some marked down cute board shorts for $24. I'm ready for the beach!

Title Nine sale

TITLE_9-AD2.jpg

Title Nine, the women's sports clothing catalogue, is having a summer sale. Unfortunately, hardly anything is on sale!! But I did find one cute skirt on the back page of the catalogue--d'oh! It's sold out. I knew it was a good deal. Anyway, you can check out their other sales here. Order online or call then at 800-609-0092.
