Super Bionicos in Baldwin Park

Dining on a budget:

Craving a fresh lunch one day, I decided to go Super.

Super Bionicos in Baldwin Park is a little shop along a small strip mall on Ramona Boulevard that offers a variety of fresh fruit items, smoothies, sandwiches and, of course, bionicos.

Bionicos are a Mexican specialty dessert that features a mix of fresh cut fruits topped with a sweetened Thumbnail image for SUPERBIONICOS2.JPGcondensed milk and cream mixture, shredded coconut, granola and raisins.

They are made to order if you prefer just one type of fruit, and if you would like cottage cheese or yogurt instead of the cream mixture.

My super lunch included a small bionico, a tuna sandwich with everything and a refreshing small watermelon juice, or "agua fresca" as it's better known here.

A sandwich combo runs $4.60 plus tax and comes with a sandwich, bag of chips and small drink.

A sandwich by itself is $3.60, definitely within my budget.

Now this is not the typical sandwich one makes at home.

These sandwiches are made with telera bread, a long, flat bread found mostly at Mexican bakeries.

When toasted, the bread is nice and crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside and just big enough to make for a filling sandwich.

The sandwiches come in turkey, ham, bologna, salami, tuna or in combinations, and include everything - lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, avocado and jalapeno.

The sandwiches are also made to order. I prefer no mustard myself. I love the fact that avocado and jalapenos can be added at no extra charge.

Because it is a small shop (it only has three tables), I wouldn't suggest trying to have a big going-out-to-lunch party here. The place would be perfect for a lunch date.

And because the independently owned business (which usually only has two or three staff to help) makes everything from scratch, expect to wait at least 20 minutes for your order.

If you have the time, it's definitely worth the wait. If you don't, phone orders are welcome.

Also, make an ATM stop beforehand since the store only accepts cash.

Super Bionicos is located at 14315 Ramona Blvd., #B, Baldwin Park. Phone number is (626) 962-6223.

I usually get a small or medium sized made to order fruit salad. The staff are pleasant and respectuful. Now-a-days the fast food chain and customer service in general is lowsy. But,this establishment is rather good. I enjoy the flat bread sandwich. I suggest phoning in lunch orders. They are usually buy during M-F 11-2pm. Good place. I recommend.
