Space Exploration Technologies Corp., the El Segundo developer of low-cost rockets, held a ground breaking ceremony today at Cape Canveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 40.
The company, better known as SpaceX, will use the facility to launch its new Falcon 9 rocket. Operations will begin in late 2008.
SpaceX said it will upgrade the facility to "transform the site into a state of the art facility." SpaceX plans to use that site for commercial satellite launches, supply missions to the International Space Station and eventually sending crew members to the space station and future orbiting destinations.
“Initiating activities at the Cape in Florida is a major milestone in our mission to decrease the cost of reliable access to space,” said Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, at the ceremony.
